What would you do?? CARS

  1. Considering changing to one of the following.

    Porsche Cayman S
BMW M3.. Yes the 3 not the 4.
or wait for the BMW M2 which isn't due until end of 2016 beginning of 17

My choice would be the M2 but i'm extremely impatient.

    WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

  2. The Cayman S is ment to be a great car and seems to get awesome reviews, one of the missus work friends has just bought one and really can't rate it enough.

I don't really know much about the M2 what are the specs??? Knowing BMW it'll be a cracking car

  3. Agree the Cayman is amazing but the M2 is something different and the M3 is the wife's preference.

Also the M3 already has retail contributions and i would expect BMW Finance contributions later this year. So could be the cheaper of the 3.

    M2 known specs: N55 with S55 engine components 365BHP 343lb/ft and speculated overboost(guessing 25lb/ft)
The N55 in standard form is good for 370-380bhp and 400-420ft/lb with just mapping. So with the addition of the S55 parts could make it very very interesting.

  4. Be honest where can you use that much power, I've had my mates BMW 530d which is mapped and by god it's quick for about a 10 second blast, then it's speed camera and traffic, my mate is the business manager at Sytners , he's got the new M4, says that's a waste of time as yet can't use it properly, just too power for our roads. Lovely car though

  5. Fair point but for me not the correct point.

It will be used for work, shop duties, euro trips and the track. So needs to fit all purposes. I currently have an f80 330d, which is equal to if not faster than the Meg, but it lacks in a way the M's don't

Put it this way... if i could get an M330d rather than a 330d M sport i'd own one. If i could get a Cayman 2.7(non S) but with all of the kit that comes with the S i would. It's not only the power.

It won't be in place of the Meg which will eventually pretty much just be a track car.

In truth you cant exploit any car beyond a de-tuned Citroen C1 1.0(a car i actually love :rolleyes:smile: on British public roads.

  6. Fair(ish) point, but by this logic, you're saying it's pointless to own anything over 400bhp for example, which I don't think it is. Not everyone will buy their car to be at ten tenths the whole time.. mine only has 360bhp and I don't push it right the way because I don't need to. For me it's a case of knowing the power is there as and when I need it. Plus, people like willy waving don't they so the more horsepower the better in that case.

As for the cars in question, it'd be the Cayman for me all day long. The 981 Cayman's are stunning cars, with the on-road performance between them and a 991 Carrera being negligible. The M2 does look a corker, but the Cayman's flat-6 would win it for me any day. Whenever I see one on the road, I just instantly assume they're a petrolhead of sorts because it screams drivers car to me. That and I'm similar in that I can't wait and to hang about for another 12-18 months would be too much for me if I was in the position/convinced myself to buy another car. The F80 M3 would play second fiddle for me against the Cayman, but I do prefer it to the M4.

  7. Nah, all that power for the road is just not needed, every where you go is traffic and road works, UK roads are just not built for fun anymore, you just might get to use the power once or twice but on an every day commute or shopping trip you'll still be no quicker than that C1.

  8. Pretty much how i feel. I really don't like the look of the M4(Personal taste) but i do like the M3 plus it has the all important rear doors, also its available now. Having said that the change wont be until March-ish next year.

Having driven the 991, 997 and 981S and non S i prefer the 981 on the road. As comfortable and feature-rich as the new 981s are .... its nowhere near as good a tourer(euro-trips/shopping etc) as the M3 is or i would imagine the M2 will be, so there is the downside. But remains on the list simply because of how fantastic they are to drive.

Steve1.... Not entirely true... Saturday and Sunday mornings in Sussex or Kent a plenty fun enough to warrant a reasonably powerful car, for me. As do track days and blasts across Europe. We clearly have different needs and experiences with our cars. If i was experiencing what you're saying, i might agree but i don't see driving in that way.

  9. I love the new m4 but it's all down to personal tastes.

I don't think you'd go wrong with either of the cars you've chosen. I'm a big BMW fan tbh, we own a 1 series and its a cracking car and I do a bit of work for a friend who owns his own bmw approved workshop so if I didn't have a strange habit of french cars I'd no doubt drive something Bavarian lol

  10. I'm with you Dan I think the 4 series is a good looking car in a way other Beemers arent and the M4 is stunning. Surprised to see people on here not liking it

  11. But a 4 door m3 has appeals, get a load of mates in it and go off scaring the hell out of them hahaha

  12. Really difficult choice; All great cars!

M2 if it'd would be available now, no doubt!

I'd have to vote for the M3 even though I like the cayman!

  13. And this coming from a man with R26 eater in his profile rofl, for me darkant and we are all different in our views it has to be the cayman, and the cayman right now, go on shuffle off to the showrooms you know you want too lol

  14. Yeah weirdly i just don't like the styling or the shape of the M4. I did love my e92 coupe though, just had simpler cleaner lines. To me the M4 look proportionately incorrect. I like the squarer stance of the M3.

I fully understand why people love the new M4 styling. My brother particularly likes it.

My friend has the M6 which to me is more visually appealing. But i can't justify the size, weight.. or come to think of it afford one.

Dan what 1series do you have? I had a 120d coupe for 2 years also

  15. I've always liked that idea. Chuck a weeks worth of shopping in the back couple of mates and still have a great time blatting around.

  16. Hahaha don't tempt me!!!!!!! Porsche East London offered to loan me a Cayman S for the weekend a few months back but i refused. Financially not the right time. I'm prepping myself for early next year.

Interesting to see so much love for the Cayman though. Only Rausner has outrightly gone for the M2 followed by the M3.

How to i use man-maths and man-justification techniques to quantify swapping a 4 door car 'does everything' car for a 2 door sports car? At least the M2 is a halfway between the 2.

  17. Ring trips with the boys haha

  18. Not a great comparison at all but I went from a 4 door jaguar to the 2 door R26, sod the room and the doors, I don't miss it at all , well maybe except on Newport to Scotland trips lol, how many times a month will those back seats be used? cayman just oozes driver appeal for myself, but then my kids are grown up now  good luck on your choices amigo

  19. Only having to cater for myself (and sometimes the girlfriend), 2 doors/2 seats was always an easy decision for me moving away from the Megane. I think the E92 is a much better looking car than the F80 generation Bimmers, but each to their own. If I had £50k to spunk on a car, I'd definitely go for the M6!

On the power front, there are plenty of roads in the UK that are there to be exploited.. just gotta go and find em  Living by the Salisbury plains is pretty joyous and I'd kill for a Cayman S sometimes out there!

  20. Whats the budget? Caymans I have no doubt will be amazing to drive and I reckon I would love one , I just cannot warm to the looks and it doesnt bring out any desire for me.

    2nd hand GTR?

  21. GTR would be sensational. Eye-watering running costs though... Would totally eclipse those other cars mentioned and then some

  22. Budget should be around £48K but has to be new or max 3 years old but with min 2 year warranty, Work related issues :worried:. They don't even like 2 door cars as a rule but they seem to be more lenient on the doors than the age. Rules out the GTR not sure i could live with one, cost aside. Also there absolutely no way the wife would be convinced.

I'm pretty sure my friends M6 new was about £75k which WAY out of my budget.

In terms of the looks of the Cayman in the right spec with the right wheels i really like it. To my eye it looks compact and relatively understated yet purposeful. The Boxster is the better looking of the 981s i like how the soft top breaks up the lines of the car.

  23. I think you could probably pick up a 3 year old M6 for around that, but I don't know about warranty etc. The GTR is a wholly impractical car

  24. I'de go for the Cayman personally mate. Its a great car and in my opinion a better overall package than the M3. The question of how usable the power is on the road is secondary to the chassis and how it delivers the power. I would be suprised if after having taken both cars down the same road at real world pace you were less willing to relinquish the Porsche key. Cant comment on the M2, but if you bought well the Cayman would probably be more wallet friendly if you decided to swap to one when its launched.

  25. this x10

  26. caymanr26

    caymanr26 Events Liason

Yup Cayman for me too - 100%

An exec saloon (all be it a bloody good one) or an out and out car built to look good, go well and handle great from the word go plus can be used everyday - love them to bits
