I've been monitoring my fuel consumption and the cost since picking up my 175RS in late April. I've a 70 mile round trip to work so went for the derv option over petrol. Basically £200 a month is what I'm spending on average which includes trips away at the weekend. Here are the stats:
Road trip. I've had a number of cars over the years and have always kept an eye on fuel. When I realised the S6 was costing me £500 per month it went and suddenly I was out of my overdraft! Haha. I appreciate this forum is primarily for fast Meganes and most will want more power/boost and fuel will be at the end of the considerations list but I bought my Meg as an interesting alternative commuter.
Spot on to the manufacturers specs. Not bad for a 120k car. Average for a 2007 2.0 derv. The little 1.4-1.6 dervs are better on fuel but not by to much and have half the power. I was a bit surprised to see the new meg 275 is in the same tax bracket as the 175. Pretty disappointed considering how refined the dci is compared to the other diesels of the same age in its class.
This is what my 2005 Megane 1.5dCi (106bhp) did on the same commute cruising at about 20mph less on average:
As I've said, I appreciate these cars and this forum is 95% about going faster. In a straight line or around a bend. However, if you want to commute in a car too and do more than average mileage, fuel is important. It's one dimensional not to consider it- but that's why I bought a derv in the first place. I posted this in the general forum as I was generally interested in knowing how much folk spend on fuel. I'd love to know what a petrol is costing to run and wether this diesel is worth it or not considering the lack of power. The "how much do you spend on insurance" thread is a hit with loads of replies. Yet no one seems to want to consider how much money they burn on fuel. The same goes for tyres, folk bragging about saving £5 a corner by buying from some obscure place. I guess the answer is that we all know that we spend too much and therefore don't want to consider it.
The app is called road trip. Road trip lite is free and does everything road trip does but doesn't allow you to track multiple cars and a few other features I don't use. You can do this easy enough without the app. One gallon is 4.55 litres. Divide litres used by 4.55 to get gallons. Divide mileage driven by gallons used to get mpg. If you always fill it up you know how much you are using. Either zero the trip or make a note of the mileage to see how much ground you cover between fills. The app just makes things easy and keeps it track able with other bits which is nice.
I do at least 400 miles a week in my 265, that's just going to and from work. So as you can imagine my fuel bill is fairly hefty, around £400 a month
My 250 has used 230 Gallons or approx. 1040 litres in 5500miles = approx. £1355 in 6months this is Nitro/Vpower only My BM has used 257Gallons or approx. 1170litres in 10800miles = approx. £1520 in 8 months. Only 2/3 of this is mine so 805 litres - £1020 So total spend in 8months across both cars is about £2375 £295 a month, which isn't bad at all considering this includes a euro trip and a couple of track days.
I'm putting in £54 every week and do about 240 miles usually averages about 23mpg Makes me laugh people who say in wrong if you wory about petrol. I assume those people don't have houses and kids etc It may be fun to drive but unless you are a millionaire you still worry bout the cost of fuel etc
I was putting in £50 a week in my Meg and averaged around 30-33mpg over 250-300 miles.. sometimes it need a sly tenner on the Thursday night for Friday
That's 23.9mpg using your figures. Does that tally with the computer. Out of interest, mine is pretty much spot on. Perhaps optimistic by 0.5mpg.
I've spent a lot on petrol over the years ! So bought me a R26 as the daily when I'm not cycling to work etc. ive had my Audi B5 RS4 for neary 9 years and that is very juicy and very expensive to service and maintain so hence the R26. Much much cheaper to run etc and it's fun too ! I think I've got the Megane bug now ! So will trade in the R26 for a 265 in the future as they are great handling cars with a lot of character ! The B5 RS4 is more of a straight line beast but they do corner well with a decent set of coilovers and arbs. If I could find a car with the handling of Meg and breaks then the build quality and practicality of an estate and insane straight line speed of the Audi then that would be the ideal car for me !
I put fuel it when it needs it, this week 90 quid iirc some weeks it only has 50 either way I don't really care as I enjoy the car for what it is, if i wanted mpg I'd go for a Prius lol
Exactly, mines running 630's, RS custom map. decat, airtec etc and I want more again! On track it'll rinse a tank in hundred miles but it's sure fun haha
Both cars are actually fairly accurate Meg shows 24.1MPG BM shows 42.2MPG Most modern on-board MPG computers seems pretty accurate. My 911 was bang on, the only car that didnt tally was a Mazda diesel i once owned, was always about 2MPG out
I'm not convinced knowing what you spend equates to caring/worrying about MPG. Well certainly not in my case. Tbh it wouldn't matter if i spent £200 or £700 a month of fuel.. i'd still want to know my MPG. I know how much i spend on food each month but i'm not concerned about over or under eating or whether i'm spending too much or too little.
Cause it does, see all the time on these groups people obsessed with mpg, as many have already said if you mpg you've bought the wrong car! Don't get me wrong I flick through the display but the only time I'd care about mpg is if it was clearly drastically low where there could be chance of being a fault on the car! Going to the extreme of sitting down doing graphs, calculations is just a bit far fetched?? If I got to the point where I gave a monkeys that much I wouldn't own my car For me my cars a luxury/toy and I own it to enjoy it not to monitor how good on fuel it is, like I said if that was the case I'd buy a small town car!
Some people, myself, like data and/or references. It has no bearing on how much they do or don't enjoy something.
With you on that. I went from a pretty thirsty Meg to an alcoholic V8. I can afford it, but always keep an eye on the mpg to satisfy my data-seeking side - regardless, I love my cars
I love the B5. Had two. One 1.8 QTS (rare old bird), one S4. Had a S6 C5. I understand what you mean about bud quality but that was Audi at its finest. They're not that good now. I wanted an RS4 so much after going to a MRC dyno day
Why reply to this then? Why open it at all and read through it other than to be contentious? If you'd read it properly you'd understand as I've stated why I started the topic, what aspect I'm interested in and that I appreciate this forum is 95% about other more important matters related to our cars! I don't sit down drawing graphs. Again if you'd bothered to read this before hitting the reply button you'd know! Why some people are interested is not far fetched. This is a car community and we can talk about what we like within the constraints of the the forum rules. Here's another one for you, I live by a financial mantra of 50/20/30. That's percentage of take home pay towards different aspects of living. 50% is fixed costs, mortagage, bills etc, 20% is savings, 30% is free spends which include groceries and fuel! I can afford to pay far more out on fuel but I choose not too. I have other priorities right now. Therefore monitoring fuel use and knowing what I can afford is important to me. However I love cars! If someone could have advised me from this thread that I could run a 230 for the same price as my 175 I'd be out there right now looking for one.
To begin this wasn't my first reply, my reply was pretty much like most other members that have posted in the thread. I got into a discussion with another member. Don't get me wrong I know on average how much I put in my car roughly, I don't think there's one member on here who doesn't but at the same time when it needs fuel it needs fuel as my personal mileage varies but if I was doing the mileage you were I'd no doubt have a quick derv. I myself like you have other outgoings mortgage, house hold bills and general costs of living and I also like to save a little and have other hobbies and interests as well as cars. It wasn't no dig by no means, I just personally find it very analytical and for myself life's to short
