Advice please

  1. Hi. I'm new and looking for a new toy. I have 3k and have looked at a few meganes around the 05 year. Are they as unreliable as I'm reading as that's really holding me back. Any advice would be great as I don't think I can afford a special edition is the normal 225 any good. It will do about 5k a year with various driving types.

    Thanks

  2. To get a good one on that age you'll probably need a bit more cash. Look in the for sale section on here as you'll probably be able to find some history of the car too

  3. Thanks would you say they were unreliable. Everyone saying to leave them.

  4. No worse than anything else for the budget in my opinion. There was plenty sold so second hand parts are easy enough to get hold of as well.

  5. I've had mine 3 years and it's been totally reliable.
More reliable than the bmw,Audi and Golf I've previously owned.

  6. Just make sure it has history, belts etc and get it checked out... great cars IMO... like Tom says, and at the end of the day you're looking at a 10 year old car mate...

  7. Actually this is a good point. My BMW 330i is more unreliable than any Renault I've owned.

  8. Craig a whole lotta peeps tried to put me off to with horror stories and 2nd hand whispers, I had a jaguar before this R26 and a bmw before that and then a vw before that and i can honestly say my car has been easily as or more reliable as them, but listen now and listen well, it has been 20 times more fun and face smiling than all 3 put together mate, I aint never looked back.....for me it has been 5000 pounds with 10000 smiles lol

  9. I've covered 5000 miles so far in my R26 and the only thing gone wrong so far is a window regulator
    my Audi has had :
    alternator
    fuel pump
    lambda sensors
    egt sensors
    MAF
    diverter valves
    boost leak x2
    rear spring
    cv boots x3
    cam cover gaskets x2
    after run pump
    cams replaced plus followers x6
    geometry x3
    All bushes replaced
that's what I can remember I'm sure there is more ? And it's meant to be a reliable car !

  11. Didn't know how to post the link but scroll down to Renault R26

  12. That's all good and well Lynchy, but I can easily post a similar list of items the my R26 needed. Run me to over £3k in maintenance in 14 months/12k miles.

My advise for a fun RenSport for £3k would be a Clio 182 - IMHO.

  13. must of had a lot of work done to make it to over £3k ? It was £2,5k just for the cams to be replaced on the Audi. That's why I got the R26 as it's cheaper to maintain etc ! Compared to the Audi.

  14. Clio 182 would be a cracking car my mate has one

  15. That's my point. You will get a better 182 for that price than a 225. Running cost will be comparatively lower too.

  16. Just size though with the clios. My 172 feels like a tin can after I've been driving the megane.

I've done many miles in both my renaults mate, a 15 year old phase 1 172 and a 10 year old 225. Both of which are modified and never had a problem other than interim maintenance and age wear but I've looked after them and they were looked after prior to my ownership

  17. thanks guys you have all been really helpful. I am looking at the 330 ci aswell but I have to say it's hard to see past the 225. Is the standard 225 on a 55/06 plate ok. As I can't afford the specials. Saying that I know someone selling a 57 f1 with 120k for £2500' as they are desperate for cash.

  18. I have found my R26 to be very reliable, it's never even turned over more than once when starting up.

Theyare expensive to run tho, I've had it for 45k and 3 years and spent over 5k on discs, pads, , driveshafts, tyres, servicing, bits of body work etc, so if you can budget those in and you find a good condition RS that's been looked after then I'd say go for it.

theyre an absolute riot to drive, so much so it's made it difficult for me to choose a new car. They just can match up to the meg for balls out thrills

  19. I just sold my rx8 which did 17 mpg & cost me 10k in repairs. I sold it for £2400 so anything will be better lol

  20. Blimey, I thought Mazda were well built/ reliable. Heard about the crap fuel consumption tho

  21. Clio 182. Simple, fast and cheap to run.

  22. I would never recommend the rx8 lol not unless you have your own fuel station.

Problem em is in 36 and too old for a Clio I think plus I need to get teenagers in the back
