225 outer driveshaft cracking (change driveshaft or CV joint)

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by bootneck, Jun 3, 2015.

  1. Hi peeps  I joined at the wkend from the old 'dead' meganesport site.
My drivers outer driveshaft joint has started to slightly crack when pulling/accelerating away with steering on half-to-full lock.
So what is the best option?? renew the CV joint or just buy a new/recon driveshaft?
Where is the best place/price to purchase them? It looks like Eurocarparts do a decent driveshaft price.
Also is Ads still around & supplying parts? Cheers Lea

Is it clicking when you turn the steering? Unless it's actually cut into the boot (mine did on one) just regrease it all all re clamp the cv joint. If the boot has cracked or ripped you'll need a new one. They're not crazy money from Renault.

  3. Had this problem on my 06 225f1 the cv is part of driveshaft, replaced drivers side driveshaft good as new cost me £163 from Renault parts direct brandnew. My mechanic fitted it 1.5hours. Imo new shaft and you also haven't got to worry about the cv boots either. Just my experience. Gota 250 cup now and just had lower hub bearings done today, Renaults spend spend spend, but we love them

  4. If I pull out of the drive, turn the steering half lock & then accelerate out onto the road, I can hear a cracking noise.
So it must be either the splines on the driveshaft end going into the hub or its the CV joint itself, I've not had chance to investigate it yet.
I dont think the boot is split as it was only MOT'd last month & it was ok then.
I was just wondering if its common for it to be the splined end or if 90% of the time its the CV joint thats cracking.

  5. Id investigate. My nsf lower hub bearing went last week on my 250 i had awfull creaking noise on left lock cause of the bearing. When i had cv go on my 225 f1 which eventually disintegrated at a road juction turninv right before it went fully i had exactly your symptoms as you. Investigate if i was you when you get a chance.

  6. Yeah I was expecting it to be a new shaft, I think eurocarparts are doing them for around £110-120 but was hoping some members may come up with the best option.
Ive owned mine for 6yrs from 17k miles & I've been lucky & only had to spend the usual wear, tear & maintenance,
but I did have the timing belt & clutch done last year at 50k which was a tidy little sum,lol

  7. Its due for its next service/oil change so I'm going to get it sorted sametime.
Then when its right I think 6yrs is long enough & I'm going to put her up for sale.
Its been a great car but time for something a bit newer now
