Dodgy people and being up all night.

Discussion in 'Megane Discussion' started by Tiababy, Jun 1, 2015.

  1. This is car related in that it's to do with my Megane 275 and a possible break in/theft that may have accused.

So for some reason I couldn't switch off and go to sleep tonight. Partly due to packing for a holiday and partly because I've felt weird all night.

Sat in bed and I hear a noise outside. Look out to see a bloke on his own looking at the car, nothing weird there and he walks off.

5 minutes later I go to look again and there's now 4 blokes circling the car, one of them looks to be looking in the bushes for something (no he wasn't peeing as I viewed him look into the car then go off rummaging), one appears a bit drunk but the other 2 are peering into the car.

My Window in the bedroom is open so I lean out and shout to my other half that there's 4 dodgy people around the car. This gets their attention and they quickly disappear.

So I'm tired as all hell but afraid to go to sleep. Good thing I need to adjust my sleeping pattern for a 9 hour flight and 5 hour time difference I suppose, boy do I want sleep though.

Not sure why I'm posting this, just looking for reassurance I suppose. I know keyless entry is a fairly vulnerable system judging my bmw/Audi/focusRS/foretaSTs.

  2. Stuff that, if your going on holiday Id move the car to your parents or a garage

  3. Got CCTV ? I know it wont prevent it being pinched. Perhaps put something up to let them know there being watched.

  4. I would move the car somewhere else.

I am miles away ( Doncaster ) but you are more than welcome to leave the car in my garage. Genuine offer. I wont drive it . Just prefer to keep a owners car, with the owner.

  5. As above! You are more than welcome to bring your car to mine! I live in huntingdon!

  6. It's going in my brothers garage whilst I'm away as there's no one to watch it and stuff leaving it parked, unmoving for near enough 3 weeks. That's asking to come back to it being gone imo.

It does have a disklok as a visual deterrent too. It's just one of those scenes that you know, had you been asleep the car would have either been gone or had a window put through.
I tried to reason it off as just them being interested in the car but you don't cover up like they did just on a walk around at 230am on a Sunday night/monday morning.

Thank you for the offers though, it's great to see people actually care. This is my pride and joy and it would kill me for someone to just take something I've worked my ass off to be able to have.

  7. Their out there, its the wonderful society that we live in.

  8. Can't have nice things these days, want to protect your property? You can't because the police only go after the easy targets and don't want to investigate or put in any legwork.
Mines in a garage with double locks, I never leave it out as you can't trust people not to walk past it and run a key down the side or kids to use it as football target practice.
I'm reluctant to even think about getting a new car where I am as you just end up a target for scumbags.

Should have called the police too mate. Doing the job I do, they would have called it an emergency if you said they were looking into cars and hiding in bushes. At least they would in Sussex.

  10. If I lived in an area like that I'd drive a £1k car I didn't care about.

  11. The keyless is very vulnerable, my best mate had his hacked and broken into two weeks ago!

Sorry to hear though, I wouldn't be sleeping if that was me either. I hear a blade of grass whistle the wrong way and that's me up and checking the garage so I can't imagine how worried you'd be having witnessed people checking it out.

  12. Jesus. That's not what you need just before a holiday. I don't want to put a downer on things, but what happens when you come back? I wouldn't be able to sleep.

As somebody else said, look into highly visible CCTV and a bright PIR light maybe?

  13. I'd fork out for some kind of CCTV. Systems aren't that expensive nowadays.
Then stick a notice somewhere visible that the house is under CCTV. I'd much rather that than not sleep at night! Luckily my Merc is tucked away nice and safe!

  14. Where my car is usually parked, it's not possible to have cctv. It was just fortunate I parked my car somewhere in view as I usually can't. It's a road so a light on a sensor would constantly be going off. I'm looking into a garage for it when I get back after last night. It's usually cornered in by other cars, last night it wasn't and was very visible. Plus it's not always there as I work shifts so the car is only sporadically parked, there's no pattern.

Tbh it looked like they would have put a rock through a window rather then get in it keyless. Plus I lock it with the card so the hands-free isn't active. It has to be unlocked by the card.
I'm a light sleeper so had I heard a bang or glass shatter I'd have been up instantly. Friday someone set off 2 car alarms on the same street so I think they maybe scouting the street.

There's a bloke with a year old Porsche 911, parked down the side and a lambo cornered in the corner of where the garages are and they have been there for a while and everyone knows they are there.

Tbh I didn't phone the police as what was the point. I pretty much chased them off by shouting and what could they do? We will keep an eye out? No crime was commited and I wasn't going to let them damage the car just to say one had.

My other half thinks he knows who they are anyway. He used to be involved in a dodgy group before I met him so he is going to be having words with a few people.

  15. You never know what they've touched, left some prints in some windows maybe etc etc

If I could I'd wait up with a shotgun but I think that might be frowned upon.....

  16. Trust me I'd have happily let my dog at them. They wouldn't last long with her.True. Well the cars being locked away for a few weeks but whilst I have to park it back there I'll be keeping an eye until the garage is sorted

Anyone know a fuse I can pull that'll disable it or disable something to stop it being viably moved? In my older cars I pulled the fuel pump fuse but the fuses in the car seem like trivial fuses rather then vital and there's no guide for any of the other ones.

Calling the police is usefull if it's happening in other streets you might get a step up in patrols plus if they figure out who it is then can use bait cars to catch them and surveillance. It's definitely worth while.

  18. I've got concerns about mine when I get it next week.
I have a garage currently used for storage which at a push could be emptied. It's a really tight fit though. Looking at the dims of the megane, I'll only have inches front and back clearance, and a really tight squeeze to get in and out.
I take it to knick cars like this now days they'll just break into your house and get the key card?
I have a steering wheel lock fitted as a visual deterrent.
I've been thinking of getting a dummy key card (seen some on ebay), leaving it on view, so that they won't have to come upstairs. This would trigger the downstairs alarm, and while they try and figure why the car won't start it gives me chance to at least wake up grab a baseball bat and practice my swing.

  19. That seems to be the way with the Renaults but they can be taken without them too. Just the OBD port is a pain in the ass to get to compared to most other makes so it's a harder steal.I think I've only heard of the mk3s being taken by home invasion or car jacking so far.

Even if the garage is tight, put some soft padding on the walls at the level the bumpers would be and the doors would open and it should be fine. It's much more preferable to being kept on. the street.

MBC if it happens again (I hope not, I hope the fact I watch that car like a hawk has put them off) then I'll inform the police

  20. Yeah agree with this, also they can come round and within 2 minutes they'll tell you easily how you can improve your security or work on the weak points, I had a nasty break in during evening darkness in a place I used to stay in central London and the old bill were great at telling us why this house out of 40 on the street was the target.....its amazing what a fuck off security light can do as a deterrent for example

And yeah for the garage, some old carpet on the walls for doors, and also front bumper will make this a lot better in a tight space

  21. Sorry to hear this! But the scumbags are out there! It happend when I was at my parents house and now being in my first house it's happend here - woke up to a scumbag in the car searching through the glovebox!

Yes it's my fault as I left it unlocked but the only two times I know I've left unlocked as I could remember exactly what i did, both times someone has been in it! Our cars must be checked literally 2-3 times a week!!!

  22. Really sorry to hear this, as Mr Burns would say "release the hounds"!! I know I wouldn't be able to sleep knowing those tossers were out scoping my car, let your dog do her stuff!!!

Its a good question about the odb port and reprogramming? How does the Renault stack up on this can't be as bad as the BMW or ford? 1 or 2 focus rs seem to be going a week at the mo. I came up with a mod for the focus wiring that disabled the odb, might be worth doing the same to the Megane maybe?

  24. You can program a key through the obd port.

  25. I live in luton and I've got 2 cameras on my car! The people over the road from us regularly drive their cars with rubber gloves on and touch wood we haven't had any trouble! Cctv puts you at ease because even if you are asleep you'll see everything. They do 4k cameras now and you can get a good system that'll store 25 days footage for about £600. We fit them though so we get them for less but you can get a decent system that should put your mind at rest for not too much though!

  26. CCTV won't stop them. Complete waste of money.

  27. Ovy id be interested in something like that for the Megane. I think it's more the location of it. In the Ford's it's by the steering wheel in an alarm dead zoneIn the Megane it's in an area that will set the alarm off and it's tucked away behind plastic that's a bitch to remove

Good news my other half has found out who they were. He will be having words with them and he has a reputation locally still so the car shouldn't be touched whilst I'm at his.

  28. I'd say it puts people off, if they know they're being watched they might not want to hang about!

  29. Agree with the CCTV doesn't put them off. Scumbags know you have the cameras but they done care. They know the police do F all and they can't do F all.

If nobody gets hurt the police don't care.

    EDIT: Bring back capital punishment.

  30. It won't stop them if they are determined to steal your car/ break into your house. If they are too stupid not to cover their faces, what will you do with the footage, pass it on to the Police ? Good luck with that

Cctv is a bit of a waste as they do just cover their faces.

  32. It's never going to be the only answer, but it's a valid part of securing a building or location.

Along with locks, lighting and alarms.

Hopefully they were just drunken idiots rummaging about.

  34. Back in the day in my 5 turbo I had a clifford concept 600 alarm and it had the most annoying LOUD perimeter defence, so if anyone walked up to the car it would chirp fecking loud.
It was even adjustable to increase or decrease the perimeter so I used to have it set to cover my drive way.
I can only imagine these systems have got more advanced nowdays (but havent looked into them).
You can only defend against these scum if they are really after something they'll usually get it or if the cant get it they just damage it and leave us to pick up the pieces.

i had a look and took some of the wiring apart on my 250 this morning and I will be able to isolate both the odb port and start button. Not saying it will stop a theft but it least slow them that said I'm fortunate in that I have a gated property that helps.

  36. Take all the wheels off? Difficult to roll anywhere then :tongueout:
