R26 Tyre Advice

Discussion in 'Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres section' started by Benno, May 23, 2015.

  1. So, one of the advisories on my recent MOT said that both rear tyres were cracking. They're nearly 3 years old judging by a receipt I found amongst the paperwork for the car, but they still have around 5mm or so of tread left all round. My question is, will it be a good idea just to get them changed regardless of the tread depth based on the fact they're cracking? And is it worth getting new tyres all round or just changing the rears? Tyres are PS3's btw.

    Cheers

    Ben.

  2. Are the cracks on the tread or the side wall?

  3. On the sidewall

  4. Only an advisory? Just keep them on.

  5. Cracks on the side wall can be quite dangerous, how bad are they? Can you post a pic?

  6. Bin them, cracks on a three year old tyre? Sound older than 3 years.

  7. Surely if they were that bad it would have failed?
An MOT is a safety check at the end of the day, if you just using it as a daily then I would leave them, but if you drive "spirited" on the road or planning on heading for a track I would think about changing them.

  8. An MOT is only as good as the MOT'er doing it! My friend's Mk 2 Golf flew through the MOT last year with no advisories. This year it was pretty much written off.

I know a fair bit about tyres, post a pic up and I'll advise you as best I can. Like I said earlier, side wall damage can be quite dangerous.

  9. is it just the receipt that's 3 years old or does the manufacture date On the side wall say they're older.

  10. Here are some pics. Date code on the sidewall is 5211 so about 3.5 years old.

Those are all of the rear tyres, fronts are nowhere near as bad.

  11. Depends how risk adverse you are and whther you want to take a chance with the insurance company if the worst happens. personally with a car like this I don't want it letting go mid corner but it just how I view things. I've got a spare PS3 in for sale thread here if you decide to change.

  12. They are very cracked for a tyre that is only 3 and a half years old. A tyre typically will go 4-5 years before it does this. Hmmmmm, the cracks aren't very deep but if it was my car I'd replace them. It has passed an MOT but don't forget, this isn't a 12 month forecast that nothing will go wrong with your car in this time. In the opinion of the MOT inspector your tyres were fit for purpose on the day of the MOT. I would keep a very close eye on them.........or just bite the bullet and replace them for peace of mind, your choice I suppose.

  13. Thanks for all the advice guys. The car is used as my daily at the moment but I'm certainly not averse to some spirited drives or even track time in the future.

Some of the cracks can be opened up more than surface deep if you just press on the sidewall fairly hard so I may just bite the bullet and get a new set of tyres all round. I was looking at the Vredestein Ultrac Vortis, can anyone recommend them?

  14. I'm looking to replace my tyres soon. I hadn't considered these but they look great for the money. They seem to get excellent reviews as well.

  15. I think grumpy on here runs them. He seems to rate them highly.

  16. I use vorti all round . Much prefer them to PS3 , better grip and last longerdefo recommend them.

  17. Pleased to hear that as ive just bought some vortis
