Think it's time to remap my 175. A Volvo V50 D2, joined a carriageway behind me off a roundabout. I opened it up in fourth at about 95% throttle to a three speed figure. It stayed with me and then passed me when I dropped to sixth and left it at that. I've no compulsion to chase a car past 100. But it shows their are quite a few fast cars out there now. I was surprised the Volvo could match my car in this speed range as the megane is quite light and packs 360Nm of torque
probley had a T5 http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/reviews/facts-and-figures/volvo/v50/estate-2004/29054/
Dunno I think it was definitely a Dsomething. Perhaps it was a D5. However even the T5 has less torque and more mass than my RS. Pah, maybe I just wasn't trying hard enough.
You should go in my mates 535d, been mapped and from 80 you'll need something special to keep up with it
Yeah the 335-535d are quite special, lad at work has one mapped to 360bhp and 600lb of torque. Spins the wheels at 70 if you nail it!
Thats some torque. Problem is a lot of ugly black smoke comes out of the back, I couldn't go back to diesel
Yeah this is the same, had the DPF removed so leaves a right trail behind it when you plant your foot.
Those Bimmers are crazy when mapped. Still.. they sound crap and are dirty diesels! Would never have swapped my Megane for one
Not all diesels sound crap jocky lol, my 2.7 s-type once mapped and back boxes off n twin twins added sounded sweet as a V8 almost, mind you a small shot of Nos and cooled with water/meth helped too ) and all that black diesel was burned up  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUd0GoSbwlE&list=WL&index=2
Diesels are very quick these days! They was always quick-ish in gear but now there even quick off the line! Still as said - why anyone who is a "petrolhead" would buy a diesel is beyond me?!!!! Boring as hell. No matter how fast they are boring lumpy barges.
I'd consider myself a petrolhead....TVR, Z3 M Coupe, Audi RS6, various 80's petrol turbos but I'm commuting nigh on 2000 miles a month and I'm sat on a two lane motorway for most of it. Living just 30 minutes from some of the best b and A roads in the UK I still wanted something that handled well so I got this rare RS 175. For a diseasal it sounds ok, in that it doesn't sound of anything and the balancer shaft keeps the harmonics in check. I'm happy(ish) with it. Think these Meganes are great but for those saying they wouldn't do diesel because of the sound and you have to have a decent sounding petrol, I hardly think the unleaded Meg sounds particularly good either, in fact it sounds a bit pants or if modified sounds crass and a bit boy racerish. As my other motors, you have to be firing on more than four to get a decent note. It's all about firing order/timing and cylinder balance. BMW do some great derv powered cars. Was going to get an E90 335d or Alpina D2 before getting the Meg but decided to save my pennies and get this little daily RS instead.
Tbh I think most turbo 4 pot petrols sound crap, many sound like diesels anyway. Didn't buy the Meg for the sound track mind you, but at the same time couldn't really claim it sounds any better than any other run of the mill hot/warm hatchbacks whether petrol or diesel.
Yep I got the Meg for a daily and it's perfect ! Cheap to run fun and rare. The Audi is for the weekend
This doesn't surprise me. Unmodified the 175s are always down on power Usually in the low 160s bhp. That's why they feel so different when tuned because there gaining around 40-45bhp. By today's standards 0-60 and top speed aren't great for a sports derv Just average. I'm sure I read somewhere the new volvos dervs have over 170bhp and zero tax. Not sure on the size of engine though. It's the same as I was saying in another thread about the mondeo st tdci the difference in speed between that and meg 175 will be negligible.
175 is said to make that power (173PS) at 3750rpm and peak torque from 2000 rpm although it feels torquier past 3000rpm in my opinion. May get it remapped, we'll see.
There are many fast cars out there diesels included. If I hit 100mph and a car right behind I would pull over and let car pass. On a twisty road it is likely that the Volvo would disappearing in your mirrors. There is more to a car than speed. You have all heard it before, handling, feel, sound etc. I have had a few occasions where a car has pulled up beside me for a sprint and I have been tempted. However, 1) I consider what type of car it is 2) is there a lot of traffic. Fortunately or unfortunately, I still have few smiles of running in before I can truly unleash it. Anyway, I intend to do my racing on a track. There are too many lunatics driving around the streets and I certainly won't be racing any diesels, which is most of the cars that try it. Oh and by the way the tick over on the car is absolutely horrible, not a deal breaker but! I know for another thread, but are all turbos like this? (first turbo car for me).
Turbo shouldn't make any difference to idle. I've had a massive range of turbocharged cars, mostly petrol. If you have an idle problem, hen you have a problem. I agree with you regards driving past three figures in the open road but my neck of the woods lends itself to safe, visible high speed runs. Think mulsane straight!
These engine are good in terms of specific output but not the most refined. Getting the CO2 down these days means weight saving and that can be achieved by reinforcing engine blocks with webbing but lowering the overall thickness of the material. Hence they are more audible. It's not just Renault, compare a new Audi, BMW, Merc to one made in the late 90s early 2000s and you'll see what I mean.
In 2007 the m9r engine was one of the most refined 2.0 dervs. If yours is loud on tick over it needs a service with decent oil. Because it should be fairly quiet. On the move even quieter. The gearing and the gradual power output in the megane are all there to save the drivetrain. The other cars in its class especially when tuned you put your foot down and bang maximum torque. Yes they may be a touch quicker but most kill the clutches twice as fast as the megane. I had no end of transmission problems with my 888 cdti astra. I've had no problems with the meg and it has more torque and power. So I can't grumble. And the cdti engine was much louder than the m9r. The only decent sounding dervs are the high end v6-v8 jags, bmws audis ect ect.
No I'm not complaining. Mine is good, quiet and smooth. Much more refined than the same period VAG unit of equal size and layout. I'm chuffed by that. Where did you get yours mapped?
Mines been mapped 3 times at each stage of tune. First two at ktec most recent at rs tuning All by the previous owner. He spent a small fortune on it. Running over 220bhp 380ftlbs now. Still not as quick as the figures would suggest but once on the move a decently molded dci will keep up with a standard 225/r26
Is it standard apart from the map (engine). What sort of mpg does it do? I'm regularly returning 42mpg on standard diesel. That's properly figured using known actual fuel loads burnt and my brain. That said the computer is only about 0.5mpg optimistic. I've had 46.6mpg with ultimate BP stuff. I do a lot of motorway driving though.
No it has a hybrid turbo, straight through exhaust 70mm from turbo back. Miltek backbox. Double size intercooler with larger pipework. Itg maxogen air filter with custom induction hose. Trip computer indicates 43.5mpg over the last 10,000 (in my ownership) varied driving.
That's quite a bit of cash outlay. Think at most I'd just do a remap now. Good to know it hasn't lost any sensibleness
Think the only problem with Diesels is the power is spread so minimal. Had a 2.4jtd Alfa Romeo remapped to 220hp and over 350 torques. My megane would monster it everywhere as it keeps on the power so much better.
That the 156? I actually looked at a late 159ti 2.4jtds. Test drove a few. Seemed great but ultimately more than I wanted to spend. What I've found with my car is that the book performance curve doesn't relate in the real world. The stats say maximum torque at 2000rpm to 4000rpm and maximum power at 3750rpm. That should translate to a good shove at 2000 up to to about 4000 then time to change gear. In reality it's different. Yes the torque is there but the car doesn't start to really pull until you hit that peak power 3800rpm and then it is very strong to about 5250rpm.
Yeh it was a 2005 156 same engine as the 159 2.4. They are fast but ultimately think the way a petrol will rev out cant be beaten with similar sized diesels. I got destroyed by a 640d though ha.
