So this happened today...genuine Enkei NT03 18x7.5 et42 with 235/40/18 federal 595 rs-r tyres, not a fan of the colour so they will be getting a refurb

Did you try the 17's on btw? You got a side on view to see how they sit in the arches? How does it feel with the lower offset
No issues on clearance at all on the brakes, the 17x8.5 et33 caught on the strut butter had 235/45/17 tyres
They do look nice, quite offset though can you tell if they'd foul the arch on extreme compression? I ran some wheels on my old car that looked fine and didn't have an issue till shell bend at Oulton and the arch started taking lines of rubber out the tyre :x
