R26 Tyre recommendation road and track

  1. I like running one set of wheels for doing everything with about 4-5 track days per year. On my Clio I ran RSR and AD08R and found the Yokos to be far superior, brilliant all round tyre. No they don't offer the same level of grip as DZ03G or R888 but they work in the wet and dry, you don't need to worry about wear to much and they offer more grip and don't go off like road tyres too.

I was considering running them on the Megane as well but Nankang NS2R are available for much less money, I've tried these on the road in the wet and dry and they were great but I've never tried them on track.

I've read good things about the Michelin Pilot Super Sport but are they not a road tyre rather than a track tyre? They're only available in 225 as well not 235.

  2. As a lot of people on here will say.. go for the PSS.

I also ran the RSR's and Yoko's on my clio. A mate who has the PSS just done an OPL at Combe for the Spring Action event and said the grip was just fantastic.

I personally think the RSR's/Yoko's/Nankangs would be better for the track but as an all round tyre I'd put my money towards the PSS. In fact, I have.

If the PSS don't interest you go for the RSR's. I've seen them for £85 a corner on Opoeno and they last forever.

  3. Wanli are brilliant, budget tyre but at £30 each you can't go wrong

  4. Ill second that. The feeling and feedback you get from the tyre is incredible.

  5. MPSS are truly brilliant all rounder. Proper road tyre with no real comporomises and near Cup levels of grip in th edry. Also IME Michelins (Other than Cups) last very well indeed. Much much better than the OE Bridgestones on my Trophy.
    Certainly available in 19x235.

if you want a real track only option I'd go for Federal RSRs

  6. The direzza are a cracking tyre used by a lot of people just for pottering to the shops, expensive but very good, the V70 are the best for the tesco run IMO.

  7. Rank them for me Steve. Best to worst.

    PSS , RSR595 , Direzza , r888, PS2

For use on road , and light track work. Money no object.

  8. DZ03G are a brilliant tyre but also very expensive. AD08R are far superior to RSR, the only downside is they are noisier.

Tesco runs aren't my thing, the wife does that.

My last car I did 4000 miles in during my ownership, 1000 of those were on track. I like to push on without the tyres going off after a couple of laps and work in the wet. I don't want various sets of wheels and tyres. I'm talking myself into AD08R again but NS2R and PSS are cheaper.

  9. What are these? Just asking out of curiosity... Are they a track tyre?

  10. I don't think anyone has been able to keep their car on the road for long enough with these after fitting them to give a full review lol - steer clear [boom boom]

  11. For track mainly the direzza, tough as old boots and will mat and take a lot of abuse
PSS very similar with not much in it to the PS2s
595 on par just about with the 888s for a lot less money, I liked the federal even in the wet and cold they were great on the road and no better or worse than the 888 on track but the wanli are in another league lol

  12. Do Direzza's come with 5mm or 8mm tread Steve? what about 595?

  13. I'm running the ns2r in medium compound all round. No complaints other than a bit of extra road noise. Even the medium compound seems a bit soft though, 3500 miles and 3 days hammering at the ring fronts are on around 3.5mm rears on 4mm. I'd definitely buy again for the money.

  14. Forget about wanli. I saw some ling longs on a TTRS the other day. Must have epic levels of grip combined with the Quattro.

  15. No chance, don't believe that for a second.

  16. 888s are good tyres but tyre technology has moved on other tyres are out their just as good for a lot less money mate, one of the best and grippy tyres I've ran are the khumo V70a, awesome just don't last long on the front but you'll get a fair few hard track days out of them on the rear, Pilot cup 2s will be the next set I order

  17. Agreed with the technology moving forward but the 888 now have a new compound and pattern too. Think the cups are the way forward but they also don't last long with 5mm tread.

Keen to try the kumho also.

  18. Hmmmmm.

Direzza or Cup 2. or Even Pss ?

  19. Are the direzza the ones you had on your R when I came round Steve?

  20. Cup 2 are cheaper than the DZ03G in 235/40/18

How do the 225/40 PSS sit on an 8J rim?

  21. Yes Andy I think they were, how do the 225 fit on an 8j rim ? Want a picture ?

I agree wholeheartedly with this, 888s are not that great when compared to the newer R tyres as they are an old design. Soft compound on a road carcass. RSRs IME do have very similar grip levels for a fraction of the price

  24. Right, got a set of OZ Alleggerita HLT in 17x8 on the way. I've decided to give the NS2R a try as they are cheap enough, the question is 180 or 120 compound?...Or 180 front and 120 rear.

  25. 120 all round

  26. Im enjoying my Vredestien Ultrac Vortis.. On road and track.

Very competent at everything in my experience. Obviously being a 'road' tyre thir track ability is less than a DZ03G or R88 8etc, but they are certainly very capable. They have a very stiff sidewall so don’t just fold over. They are lasting very well and are noticbly quieter on the motorway that the Michelins.

  27. Reckon they'll stand up to track abuse a bit better? Or will the 180 let me stay out on track for longer if they take a couple of laps to get heat into?

  28. Be fine , they will squeal a bit though, not the best tyre but like you say cheap enough

  29. Be lucky if you get 3k miles out of the 120 with track days included.

  30. If it's not toooo late maybe this will interest someone.

Went from Goodyear Eagle F1 for winter and cold wet track day's to Micheling Pilot Sport Cup 2's for my latest outting and just covered 2,280 miles (approx 1,200 motorway miles and the rest on track) including a full OPL at Spa and then onto the Nurburgring for 52 laps over 10 days. (See <https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=r26man> for some clips) Had to change the fronts to back after Spa as some "chop" on the front left as you might expect from a clockwise circuit but after the whole trip I still have 2mm and a track day left in them. Excellent grip and feel and worth the cost of the upgrade and a country mile ahead of the Eagle F1. Watch out in the cold though as they are a bit tricky until a mile or two down the road when they quickly warm up.

    Hope that helps!

  31. Brilliant info cheers Paul , what suspension do you have now Paul

  32. Just got the car back today with a full set of BC coilovers (BR) on with the street spring set-up. Dropped about 20mm, 1.3% neg camber. Definately stiff enough for the road with half the turns on the front and +2 two the rear s glad i did not go for the hard flat circuit spring set up. Will run the car for a few days before checking alignment and camber again but so far so good. Very flat forward bias although a little crashing over the potholes and joints!!

  33. I've just texted you Paul

  34. So you never had the coilovers on at spa

  35. Hi Steve, Just called away...
No coilovers at Spa just the OEM.
Yeh it was 52 laps of the Ring that I admitted to.....anymore and d.i.v.o.r.c.e was on the books!!
Have just booked tonight to return to the Ring 28th May for 9 nights. There is a calender of days when the track is open all day over the most of the week! Rare opportunity to gert it on and test the new set-up. Looks like I'm in for another set of Cup 2's aswell.

  36. That's some laps, hope you have a wrist band

  37. No wrist band .....but the break even on an annual ticket is at 80 laps so in hindsight I should have gone that way...cos after the next trip it will be the crossing point...Oh well just have to save up a bit more OR take up a cheaper activity!!!

  38. So 235/40/17 or 235/45/17....

The 40 will give a bit more acceleration but the 45 will keep the speedo accurate
