Hi all, I have been following this forum for some time but this is my first real post I am currently looking into coilovers for my 250 however I have come to a bit of a crossroad as for what to go for based on my needs and this is where I need input from you The car is a non-cup 250 and are used mostly for daily driving but will most likely be tracked once or twice a year (we don't have that many trackdays in Denmark). So the question is that based on the limited amount of trackdays the car will see, will it then be sufficient to go for the Bilstein B14 or H&R monotube coilovers or will it be worth the extra money and go for the KW v3 or AST 5100 (if they can provide TÜV approval)? /Rune
The Nitrons look like a nice bit of kit, but I am still not sure that it would be worth it considering that the car only will see a track maybe once or twice a year. The rest of the time it will just see plain Danish roads filled with police and speed cameras.
Hi from a fellow dane :-) KW will have TÜV approval.. Most coilovers that you can get from german shops will be approved as well...
Budget doesn't seem to be an issue from your choices so I'd go for the KW V3's The good thing about the KW's is that at a later date you can upgrade them to Club Sport spec on the Megane 250 with the adjustable top mounts and different springs if you feel you need/want more from them. Also the body's on mine are like brand new and they're knocking on 4 years old now, the quality of them speaks for itself imo.
Clubsport KW's are more than just springs and top mounts Mark, They have both adjustable Rebound/compression and different valving. To the OP, I would be looking at the B14's, You don't plan on many TD's so i don't see the point in a "full" coilover kit, Plus you will still keep a bit of comfit with them. I would be considering them if i wasn't going further with mine. Blisteins are superb
This. I had B14's on my 182 and they were brilliant, I'll be going for another set in a couple of months
Says who ? i was of this opinion too !!! I dealt with KW directly upon uprating my V3's after breaking a spring at Knockhill. They told me we can upgrade you to the club sport kit with the top mounts and springs. They then realised after seeing the picture of the sticker on the damper that my Megane was a 225 (they call it Megane M) and not a 250 (Megane Z)
They should do more for the mk2 KW, really shooting themselves in the foot. Would happily have some of their top mounts for my V3's.
Thanks a lot for the inputs so far. As it is now it will be either the KW v3 or the B14 Both have the TÜV approval that are needed for MOT in Denmark. However the KW v3 is around twice the price of the B14.
Says the Adjuster knob on the bottom of the shocks for Bump and on the top for Rebound. Valving is different as well due to this. Top mounts will fit V3's and springs are a given but the 100% will not make them full Clubsport spec
The V3 have an adjuster on the top and bottom of the shocks for bump and rebound too...they're not fixed damping so I'm not sure where your coming from with that ? At least mine do, don't know about anyone else if they could enlighten us too ? Fair enough they're not going to say clubsport on the reciept just clubsport spec as it was put to me. They're also serviceable so if you wanted the 'valving' changed they'd send them to their race department to be rebuilt to your spec. I've been through all of this with their UK director mate, the rebuild and new setup costs are less than buying a new set of coilovers from another brand. Which Megane have you got MK2 or MK3 ? EDIT: Just noticed you have a 250 give them an email or call them, they're really helpful and obviously extremely knowledgable about their products. Sadly they don't do adjustable top mounts for the MK2 as the rod on top of the shock for a solid adjustable top mount is to short. You'd have to have them sent down to them to make you up a custom damper and top mount at their race department. It was to much hassle for me and a bit overkill for the amount of trackdays I'm managing to fit in ever year at the moment.
Do they? My apologies then Mark I always thought that V3s only had one adjustment for the damping, I'm sure they do for the MK3 and all the kits for other cars I have seen have o my been one way adjustable not 2 way like the Clubsports. Afaik their top mounts can be fitted to the stock damper similar to the AST adjustable top mounts
Ok brill. Thanks Mark. What more adjustability will the top mounts give me? Jamie - Yeah the V3s for Mk3 have a dial on the top and bottom of the strut for bump/rebound.
I'm pretty certain there only camber adjustable on the kw's I think the only castor adjustability would come from bushes like the adjustable powerflex ones on the mk2, although they seem like a big flop
You can add extra castor via topmounts with the Nitrons. I'm sure you could adapt the KW topmounts to be adjustable in the same way pretty easily
Yeah I've seen them mounts there a nice bit of kit, would make adjustment of both parameters a dream But like this, any machine shops I reckon would be able to do something
KW club sport and get them weighted with two people and half a tank they are flying round the nurburg as fast as the gt3's the meganes are the only production car closest to a race car
