Noisey hydraulic lifters

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by Sparta, Mar 5, 2015.

  1. Was driving today and started hearing this rattle. Mechanic said its the hydraulic lifters. So he changed the oil and oil filter. We put in about 6 litres of oil. Noise is still there although a bit quieter. Anything else I can do to get rid of the noise?

Or could it be the topix? The springs or something?

  2. I've located the noise more clearly. It seem to be coming from behind the drivers headlight on the right. So maybe it isn't the lifters. Anyone got any idea please?

  3. Hard to say could be alternator/aircon pump?

  4. The noise is Deffo coming from top end. I've used a hose to listen and it coming the the drivers side where the belt is. I've had the timing checked and its ok.

the mechanic wants to take off the sump to check if there's any blockages.

the noise increases with rpm. And only seems noticeable when the engines warm.

I took it to a specialist who told me it could be terminal i.e new engine?

Car has a slight misfire on cyclinder 2, but it hasn't really lost any power.

Anyone got any more opinions on this.

  5. Unsure if the megs have them but the carbon canister used to tick on the Clio s, and that was down near the drivers headlight. Same engine (f4r).
But if you've taken it to a specialist/ identified where it's coming from I guess it won't be

  6. It's more of a tapping. It also increases with the Rev.

  7. The carbon canister solenoid noise can increase with revs too (at least according to what I've read on cliosport)

  8. It's deffo coming from the engine area. Going to take the engine head off and see what's up.

    Hope its not terminal.

  9. I've read plenty of people mentioning this lifter noise on the 250. Renault claims normal? I'd not be happy personally! If you're replacing the lifters no need to remove head, just cams

  10. Thanks beefy! Thats settled my head a bit. I'll relay that info tho to my mechanic.

  11. Don't Renault only claim it's normal if it's cold? I've heard people claim it's piston slap IIRC.
I think the 250's had a problem with one of the cambelt idler/ tensioner/ pulley (can't remember exactly) that would cause a noise quite a few were replaced under warranty, may be worth checking I'd yours had been done?

  12. Warranty would've ran out now? It's a 60 plate. I don't mind paying if it makes it quicker. And the fact that it's already in the garage being looked at makes it easier.

  13. Check with renault, it may of been a recall, if not renault are good at paying a percentage towards the repair providing milage/servicing etc.

  14. Only 25k miles so fingers cross.

  15. Turns out I need a new engine! The rods/ Pistons are bent so not sure if it's repairable.
if anyone knows where I can get one do let me know

  16. Ouch! How did that happen? Is it mapped or anything? I'd contact Renault UK if it's standard and you've been a loyal Renault customer they may make a contribution, as 25k is nothing!

  17. Not a clue mate. I've had the car 2 months not mapped. The car had a bump before maybe that's why? Apparently it's fixable but I'd feel better changing the engine.

Bit it gutting but Atleast I know what the problem is.

More info needed on this, bent rods is one thing but Pistons??? Is car mapped or standard has it been driven hard when cold ect... Only 25k something's not right, the rods on the 250 as supposed to be stronger. Who diagnosed it??? If rods it can be rebuilt must of had a hard 25k that engine.

  19. The car isn't mapped. It's as standard. I recognise it was a middle age man that had it before(Johnny cash cd) lol.

I normally let the car warm up for a minute or two then I take my time until it's fully warm.

The damage weren't that bad it was only panel damage really. Bumper and a wing needed to be changed.

The mechanic took off the head of the engines and rolled the cars back and forward we could see the Pistons moving. I'm pretty sure he said it was the rods that were bent or maybe the Pistons.

Let me try explain this the best way. The two Pistons are suppose to be level at the top right? Well only one goes level at any one time. If it's just the rods it's worth replacing rather than a new engine?

Yeh that's rods will be better to rebuild it rather than buy a whole engine as second hand engine could be a risk in its self at least rebuild you know what ya got imo . Unless you came across a cat b running engine for example and the price was good just as an example but I would want to here an engine running or I could be no better the the one you already have.

  21. Where could I find one of those now Ovy? eBay doesn't throw up much. I'm just worried if the rods are fix I'd have the same problem further down?

That's the point a good replacement engine will be hard to find and or dam expensive, the cheapest way to go about this is to just replace the damaged parts but finding a trusted mechanic to do the work at the right price.

  23. But what caused it in the first place? detonation/ over revving/ mini hydrolock/ oil starvation etc etc. without a cause you have no guarantee that it wont happen again
Also you don't know if the bent rod has worn the bore etc.
IMO you'd be better off getting a second hand engine but as ovy said make sure you can hear it running/ it has service history!

  24. Not sure what caused it. I've had the car one month, was on the motorway about a month ago. The car kinda revved up and I got the error saying, check injection, when the machine was plugged on it said p0234 turbo over boost.

the car has been misfiring for a few weeks the mechanic said to just watch it. I think the problem started from then? I'm not sure if the previous owner took car of the car in regard to oil etc. I drove the car for about 2 days with the noise not covering more than 25 miles.

not sure where I go from here, repair or wait till an engine comes up ?

It's seems the car has been over boosting and bent rod. I would always repair existing engine over buying a second unless other factors like unrepairable or non cost effective, it would be best time to overhaul, forge, uprate bearings ect, but it all comes down to budget/circumstances. For the engine work try speak to btm as your in Birmingham I'm from west mids myself they will be able to advise you I'm sure.

  26. I've just sold an engine with valve damage but pistons were ok when I looked down the bores with a borescope, finding an engine is almost impossible and when they do come up the clio boys snap em up, you'll have to spend a fair amount of money on a rebuild, head gasket, small and main bearings, cambelt kit, rods, if your pistons are ok it might be a good idea to replace your piston rings then you got the labour on top, honing the cylinders and checking the block etc IMO I think a running engine would be cheaper just really hard finding one, I got lucky with finding mine and it came with 6 months warranty so was cheaper for me, speak to fred at btm, he only lives a few mins from me and knows his stuff

  27. It's going to a specialist who rebuilds engines tomorrow. I will see how much they say and how much damage is done.

If if the Pistons are ok it would be better Off rebuilding? There's an engine on eBay atm for over £1000. But it does have a 90 day warranty. But they can't tell the mileage as its a fire damage car. But I litterally drove about 25 miles with it. Pistons maybe ok, not sure. Mechanic reckons they're ok but the rods may nee chsnging?

  28. Here's a picture of the Pistons that was causing the knocking.

Left to right, 1-4. 2 looks the most damaged. Same cyclinder that was misfiring.

    They're buggered!

    Was the car standard?

  30. Something went very wrong to bend them like that, is the crank still ok? Bearings must have put some kind of pressure on the crank journals, i don't think the engines worth fixing, how do the bores look?
