Worked on this beautiful Peugeot 205 Gti 1.9 for Tvrman a couple of weeks ago. This is a very original car and has never had any rust issues like nearly all 205's. The wheels have never been refurbished either, all matching window etchings. I really enjoyed working on this, some spraying was done and also it took some knowledge to get the right product lineup to give the desired finish, more on this later. So on arrival it already looks mint: Washed and rolled into the garage, then clayed: At this point I would normally paint measure, mask up and do a test spot, I had previously done a test spot though and I needed to strip some stuff off to paint: Then masked up this took 2 reels but is well worth doing as the trims on this are perfect:
Tested out some ways or improving the rear spoiler: Onto paint depth readings, we know the boot and bonnnet had been painted, the gauge back this up: My test spot was done on the original paint so a test spot was done on the newer paint: Once I knew what worked I set about the correction: Paint was drying nicely on the window buttons:
Spoiler looking better but not perfect: Buttons wetsanded then polished up, swirl free ofcourse Onto the next:
This is where a deflector was fitted, not perfect but alot better: Happy with how the rear lights polished up:
At this point I wanted to test out the final products before the finishing polish stage, I had a feeling Gtechniq wouldn't really enhance and work with the older paint so tried this out: Right hand side had C1 and exo on the left had Britemax products on, the Britemax worked with the paint much better, the gtechniq side appeared more brown, I had this on a mk1 Mr2 before aswell. So to start the Britemax polymer protection stages: This left an awesome finish: After this the first layer of extreme elements machined on: This was left to cure overnight and is still one of the easiest products to buff off, even when left for a day.So onto the rest, the window buttons were replaced: Trims coated with Gyeon trim: Then my dent man was called to action on this: Next was wheels off, now these were always going to be interesting as I don't think many people cleaned behind the wheels in the 90's and they have never been refurbished,I think they came up ok all things considered:
Unlike the bodywork C1 worked really nicely on the wheels and added some gloss: Torqued back up correctly: When replacing the sunrrof trim I noticed the bulbs weren't working so as they were out these were changed: Engine bay was tidied up but in fariness was in great condition: Ceriglass and their block used to clean up the glass: Then onto G1 and G2: Smart fabric: Then leather treated with gyeon: Seals treated: Vents dusted:
Thanks Steve, really struggle to find one as nice as this I must admit such an awesome little thing. Get youself one Steve.
i was lucky enough too see this at Ed's, i had a white one back in the day, this one looks better than new:cool:
Awesome work mate. My mate had one of these back in the day. At the time, I was driving around in Mk 5 Cortina lol so going out in his Pug it felt so bloody quick. A mint Miami Blue one would definitely be part of my £100k garage.
Ed has worked on a few of my cars recently and this one has been the most interesting so far. First, a bit of background - I had three of these in a row when I was 17 with my second and third being brand new back in 92 and 93. Fast forward to 18 months ago, with a mid-life crisis firmly established, I wanted to buy another one. In actual fact I had toyed with the idea of another on and off for about 10 years but the supply of good cars was fast drying up, so I had to pounce. These little Frenchies were never built to last back then so finding one now with sensible mileage, no rust, good condition and most importantly, no silly mods (even though I modded my 1st one is nigh on impossible. But this one popped up on ebay one day when I was actually looking for spares to patch up another car I had seen. I drove up that night and bought it for top money but it was about as straight as they come. It is a 90G pre-cat non pas car with 61k miles and 1 owner since new. I have every receipt going back 25 years and it has been serviced annually at the same garage it was originally purchased from all those years ago. The bonnet and boot had seen some paint but there was no accident damage or rust anywhere. The front seat leathers had just been replaced but it was about as an original non restored car as I could find. Although externally it was in very good condition I wanted it improved without going down the restoration route and this is where Ed came. What I didn't know about Ed is how deep his understanding of the car and which products to use, went. Most people, myself included, fall into the trap of using products that trade on their branding and reputation. Ed does it differently. He lets the car tell him what to use, listens and then applies. I like GTECH products, but only because they seem to make my other cars nice and shiny. However, when I was shown the 50/50 pic of the 2 finishing stage polishes I couldn't believe the difference. The car used to have a browny tinge to the black paint which may be how it should be, or a factor of being 25 years old. But it is now very definitely Jet black. It is amazing to say the least. And then there are the other touches Ed did to smarten the car up, some asked for and some - just because. All in all, to say I am pleased with the result is an understatement but I think it is testament to Ed's ability to make something this old seem brand new once more. Thanks for reading.
Love a nice 205 - and that is one! I've got a white hill climb spec one in my garage. Nothing very original about mine though, but love the look (and the go!). Afraid though back in the day I had a mint mk1 Golf gti which was fecking awesome. Must be a bunch of us X year olds getting 80's classics again. Top work on that Ed, and lucky bot TVR man.
Lovely job Ed, great cars these are, think we spoke about them when you done my Leon. My brother and two of my nephews race 205s in classic stock hatch, and my nephew Matt has one with a mi16 motor in. We are doing a track day at Brands on 1st of April for the start of the season, got the three 205s and the Xr2i out that day, hoping to get a go . Go on youtube and put in Matt Rozier classic stock hatch and watch him at Cadwell in the rain, the lads a hero ,, Gordon
I've looked at several of your detailing threads and all, without exception, are most impressive AND you get to work with some gorgeous cars. We had a 1.9 gti aswell, lot of fun.
Great job as ever Ed. My friend had one a few years back with the mi9(?) conversion, certainly went well!
My god this car is a bit of me. Used to have a ph1 1.6 but nothing like this. What an absolute beaut must be worth a fortune!
Brilliant stuff as always Ed, always good to a classic in such great condition. My brother bought a red 1.6 205 GTi brand new back in the day, he always loved that car.
This is amazing. Id love one of these or a mint Williams. The maintenance scared me a bit so I ended up with a 172 cup!
Great car that and one that I again had a chance to see in the flesh. Interior was what impressed me most, genuinely looks like new.
