Misfire/coughing on idle!!!!!

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by Hainsey, Feb 13, 2015.

  1. So I had a few parcels today and one of them was spark plugs from ads, so I went a replaced the ones that were currently in... [IMG]

However. The misfire still seems to be there. So I checked the coil packs by doing a quick diag test. If they spark does that mean they are fooked?

OBD reader said misfire on cylinder 4?!

What else could I do/test before I start spending more money!!

    Cheers lads!!

Get a video up of the exhaust on idle, my money will be on the injectors.

  3. Well had them cleaned about 1 month ago... Not sure what sparking on coilpacks means though?!

Ahh won't be injectors then, definitely look at coils.

  5. All of them or just the one that was coming up on the OBD reader?

  6. easy way to check. with the car running, unclip the connector to each coil one at a time before reconnecting it a few seconds later.

if the engine sounds like its about to stall in those few seconds the the coil is functional if however the car is still running unaffected the thats the dead one thats being carried by the other 3.

happened to me 2 days before a trackday due to water ingress into one of the coils.

  7. So I have just done what you just said and everyone sounded like it was going to stall.... So what next? Hmmmm!!

Swap the coil pack from cylinder 4 to a different cylinder, clear the fault then see where the fault reappears - if it's moved it's your coil pack

  9. I think mark black cleared it last week, so just a waiting game for it too come back onto cylinder 4 I guess? What could I try next if it doesn't come back?

  10. New injectors sorted my slight misfire/cough on idle. Didn't bring up any codes through.

    Quick comparison video I did

  11. Hmm. Apparently cleaning them is just as good. Which is what I've done. Are there any sensors I could check?

  12. Can anyone recommend any coilpacks if it does end up being this?!

  13. Allegedly the oem brown top beru ones are the one to go for

  14. How much are these and will ads have them?

  15. Unsure on price (i have around £40 each in my head for some reason - but may be well off!) ads will most likely have them as there oem.

James157 (i think) runs the green valeo ones (much much cheaper, think you can get all 4 for around £40!) with no problems, although i've heard mixed opinions on those not lasting / not powerful enough spark etc

  16. Just had a quick look on ebay the beru ones seem to be around the £30 mark each, although if you do want to try out the valeo ones i've got a set here never used / tried i bought a complete set a while back as was having misfire codes but got my injectors cleaned while waiting for them to arrive and it cleared up my problems so never fitted them.
If you fancy trying the green ones pm me an offer

  17. Will let you know pal. Is there anything else that could be causing the misfire/coughing?

  18. Tbh you've done the usual suspects of plugs, injectors and now coils, I'd wait till after the coil has been swapped see if that fixes it.
Coils can slowly break down, not just die so will hopefully be something simple like that!

  19. I've put new coilpacks in yesterday. Thanks to jjones82 selling me a new set. It seemed fine then went for a quick drive to the shops etc and still get a few pops (inconsistently) Not sure if it's down to my exhaust? I've done all the obvious things (coils, spark plugs and injector cleaning a month ago) but new ones can wait! Just will have to put up with it!

What else is there to try? Can fuel filter be anything to do with it. Or even a sensor of some sort?

  20. I do have the green top ones and won't hesitate to buy them again. These are at least 3 years old and have been perfect, never had a misfire once.

Will find out in 2 weeks if they are powerful enough for over 300bhp.

  21. Over 300bhp, you sure?? (-;

  22. Its got everything it needs to easily reach it.

Must admit though I did forget about the rumours concerning the Valeo coil packs.Guess I'll soon find out.

  23. Have you got a backbox/ midbox chop on your exhaust? As that will make it pop to a certain extent?
The fuel filter is built into the pump from what i remember no inline one

  24. sorry for late reply on this. spark no3 here looks way too lean.

  25. Yeah think that was down to injectors I think? But have had these cleaned!! And also new plugs are in.

  26. Yeah mate I've had mid and back box chop. Ahh right okay. Nothing I could change then?

  27. were they cleaned after these photos were taken? it only takes few miles of driving for the plugs to show the latest condition.

a photo of the plugs now would be also helpful, also a picture showing deep down in ceramic.

  28. That photo was taken the other day when I changed the plugs,

The injectors were cleaned 1 month ago. What's causing the plugs to become too lean?

  29. Not enough fuel. Its the air fuel mixture that is lean not the plug. However it is seen on the plug.
It would be god to get an onb reader and look how the fuel trim is

  30. Ah right okay. I don't know a great amount on cars. So sorry for all the questions lol.

Il have a look later on the OBD reader.

What would I need to do if this was a problem? Thanks.

  31. That is as far as i can help as I dont own one.
I suppose you should reset the ecu somehow so it recalibrates the injectors. But someone else should confirm this

  32. Hello,

Thought I'd share my exp with this problem, I've had my megane r26 since November 14 and mine too had this problem. I replaced plugs and packs but still the problem persisted so my next step was injector cleaning or replacement. I was aware the previous owner filled up with normal 95ron fuel all the time and I've always used she'll vpower on the Meg and type r before it. Since November the megane has had several tanks of vpower through it and slowly but surely the cough on idle is disappearing. To the point as of the past 2/3 weeks it's gone. My car has 26k miles and fsh so injectors shouldn't need doing, I'm not going to get them done until the problem re surfaces either. So, my advice try running higher Ron field you aren't already as it solved my problem. Or spend 90 to 140 quid on injector cleaning or replacement! This is not a vpower plug and I don't doubt the benefit of injector cleaning. Just my experience.

  33. Mate, I only use Shell V-Power! and I spent £70 on getting my injectors done recently... ive done everything that i possibly can, so tbh i am thinking it just down to my exhaust!

Thanks for your help though

  34. this could also be, but I wouldn't neglect the lean cylinder.

  35. im going to take a look at the plugs later too see whats going on!! might be able to see whats going on, see if there is any inconsistency!

  36. Have you checked the wiring to the injectors and coil packs?

That's where I would look next.

  37. Hmmm interesting!! will take a look at the looms later, but "should be fine" (<<< He says)

  38. Has it had timing belt done mate? I've heard these engines never run completely smooth but if the belt has been done maybe the timing is not set up properly?

  39. Yeah as far as I am aware it's been done!
