225 Lumpy acceleration

  1. Ok so fiancé collected me from
Work tonight in my car and when I was walking towards it I noticed it sounded really lumpy. Almost like a Subarubish sound. And when acceleration the car was really rough throughout the revs. And then stopped after a few minutes of driving. Any ideas what this is?
    Thanks

  2. When you say really lumpy like a scooby, do you mean running on 3 cylinders?
If so i'd be looking at the coil packs, don't suppose you've got an obd code reader?

  3. I guess it sounds that way, but it stops after a few minutes. I thought a coil would be an issue all the time.

I could get it plugged in by a local mechanic. He dosn't charge too much.

    Electrical faults can be intermittent

  5. Ok so had the car plugged in an said about a coil and knock sensor. I have changed the coil. But still having the issue of the car being really lumpy when it starts. And then after a minute or two it seems to clear. Would this be the symptoms of the knock sensor?

it can be, the knock sensor adjusts engine timing to keep engine running right. Get that changed then clear the codes and see how you go.

  7. Tbh i doubt if it is the knock sensor making it run rough at start up unless its constantly sending a knock signal, although i'd get it changed as soon as you can it will protect the engine (especially if you ever enjoy a spirited drive!). You could always disconnect it to see (its down near the oil filter, just above and slightly to the left if looking from the front, brown electrical plug going into it IIRC)
I'd pull the plugs and take a look at them, do you know when they were last changed?
Any chance you can get a vid of what it sounds like on startup? As the f4r's always seem to run a little bit rough on cold start up, unless you know its significantly worse than it used to be?

  8. Link for video

yeah it definitely didn't use to sound this way. The first time I tried to take a video the car wouldn't hold revs and stalled

  9. The plugs where also last changed around 6 months ago.

  10. Take the plugs out and check them. The cylinder you put the coil on would be the first plug id check. If the plugs are good put the coil you took off onto its opposite cylinder ie 1+4 and 2+3 are paired so if you changed 1 now put the coil you took off onto 4 and see if it helps. If you dont get sorted i would have a look for you if your up this area.

  11. Ok so still at a loss. I have replaced a coil. And checked the plug and it looked done. When I looked at the cylinder through where the plug goes, it was damp and oily. So got a new plug and replaced it. And thought it was working as after a few miles driving cylinder went back to dry. But then again the car started running lumpy again when being started after sitting for a few hours. No idea what is going on.

  12. Where do you buy your fuel? Is it mapped or anything?

  13. Nope don't have a remap. And my fuel is got from different places. So I think the fuel is ok. As I dont think it could all be bad.

  14. Have you rechecked the plug you changed to see if its bad again? If it is there could be a problem with that cylinder. If it is bad i would do a compression test and if its good id swap the injectors about and see if the fault changes to another cylinder. Im only up in newtownabbey about a mile from were you bought it so could help if you want.

  15. I'll have a look tonight. Yeah I might do if can't get it sorted. As really bothering me as I have no clue. Damn Renaults.

  16. Just before Christmas I was having a similar problem on my 172. The car would be lumpy and underpowered with lots of hesitation. I thankfully had spare plugs/coil/HT leads which when changed didn't cure it. Diagnostically, it showed a knock sensor fault, but it actually turned out to be the upstream lambda sensor causing all the problems, but without showing itself when checked for fault codes.

  17. Where abouts is the upstream lambda?? Lol

  18. Would it be worthwhile changing the knock sensor, as that was brining up a fault?

  19. The upstream is the lambda between the cat and the engine. There is a second downstream sensor post cat.
