Early morning blat....

  1. I've always enjoyed getting out really early and going for a drive. Family, friends and especially my wife can never quite fathom going for a drive just for the hell of it, but its always been essential therapy for me. My R26.R turned up last Friday and this morning was the first chance I had to get out for a morning blat on my own.

The alarm went off at 5am, and with the kind words from my wife "Wake the kids up and I'll kill you" I crept out to be welcomed to cold rain hitting me in the face, marvellous. Garage door opened and I got that instant buzz of seeing a car that's new to you, carbon bonnet helps a bit as well . Its been a long time since a new car has stolen the limelight so much, but I didn't even look at the other cars. Card in and start button pressed I sat for a couple of minutes to let the fluids get warm, 6 point harness fastened and we were off. An easy cruise along the A30 to the M5 at Exeter and all temperatures were good, coffee and Bacon roll on board at that well known slow food outlet and I was starting to feel human.

The next 2 hours were just bl***y brilliant, what a fantastic thing RenaultSport achieved with this car. The drama of looking in the mirror and seeing the climbing frame in the back I doubt will ever get boring. Its lucky because on winter roads that plastic rear window is so covered in Sh1t after 5 miles you cant see anything anyway. Over Dartmoor and down through the South Hams, the roads and quick and open with plenty of visibility so you can really push on. I didn't notice the lack of a radio once as I was laughing out loud (Sorry LOL'ing) for most of the time. The handling and grip is astonishing and the performance is something else for a hatch, although I do appreciate from other threads that Its not as fast as a Trophy R:wink:

At that time of the morning there are so few cars around it's great to get the road to yourself. I did get chased by a Mercedes Sprinter Van, but I know the cars limits so I moved over and let it past. You dont mess around with those things as they are the fastest vehicles on the road, and as Fangio the delivery king screamed past, I could marvel at the composure and performance through the bends of a real B Road weapon:rolleyes:

I already love this car and more early morning strops and track days beckon. I got home at 8.00 and couldn't walk away from the car without looking back (the sign of a proper car) and grinning. Still buzzing from the drive and as my wife and kids are bored of hearing about every corner and Iv'e been told to shut up and stop waffling on, I thought I would post about it. Hopefully you lot will understand:wink::wink:

Looking forward to a dry morning next time.

    Excellent read enjoyed that, Thanks!

    No photos though :worried:

  3. Haha brilliant little write up and sums up the car beautifully.

  4. Gear read. Thanks for sharing. When you say other cars, what other cars do you have??

  5. As they say, if you walk away from your car and don't look back at it you bought the wrong car.

Luckily you bought the right car

Two of my favourite ever cars. Is the Trophy yours too?

  9. Can't beat a good blast out early morning

  10. Series 2 Land Rover, no roof or door tops. Great for taking kids to the pub in the Summer
    997 Gen 2 C4S
    Renault Clio 182 Trophy
    Discovery 4 (Work truck)
    Subaru Impreza RB5
Westfield with Yamaha R1 bike engine (Currently in bits)

Wife thinks I have a car problem, strange girl

  11. Not sure of your age , I'm 46 nearly but every time I drive mine I feel 18 again

  12. I'm 40 and exactly the same, feel like a teenager about to be told off every time I get out!

  13. I'm after a 911 turbo soon but not sure I'll have any more fun than my R26.R so I'll be keeping that as well

  14. Yes it is, absolutely brilliant car

  15. Excellent collection, well done!

  16. Aye, doing very well for yourself , well done

  17. I love the 997, so quick and exciting and loads of fun, but R26.R is fun in different ways. I have taken the Series 2 Land Rover out on a Summer's day and its just as much fun, and 50 feels scary quick. Plus park it in a pub car park next to the 911 and the Landy gets more attention!!! Horses for courses as they say!

  18. Anyway enough about my car addiction, anyone on here in the South West and fancies an early morning blat sometime?

You have my utmost respect, you are a hero.

  20. Had mine for 2 years and feel the same as you every time i get in it, enjoyed reading that:smile:

  21. do you write for evo??.. loved reading it. keep writing fella.

  22. No those guys can really write, read it religiously though. Glad you liked it, happy to prattle on but only about Megane stuff, wouldn't dare to stray off topic

  23. Glad to hear someone is loving their car, I can't imagine you get this feeling when driving a german hatch tho. I love an early morning thrash, haven't been up at 5am for ages, Waiting for spring to come and that alarm will be set on a sat and sun.

  24. Reading that has made me get ready to go for a late drive. Long live RS

  25. That was a brilliant read and sums up probably every megane rs owner ever. Like someone said if you don't get out and grin, chuckle, take a few glances when walking away and rub knees in a shooting stars way then u got the wrong car my friend and need a meg. It has Def made me want 2 set my alarms for early morning soon. Just need someone else in northampton to come with me lol. Awsome read fella.

  26. amen ill be out later!

  27. Not very often you read something that you can relate to.

Even though I don't drive an .R I still look back at it and that's a sign of something special.

These Megane's get completely taken for granted.

A fun weekend of driving for all should be on the cards in the future.

  28. Loved reading that, as you say no one GETS it. I get out shaking sometimes, beaut of a car btw

  29. Great little write up and quite amusing. Had mine over 2 years now and done a similar thing many times. Although you won't catch me eating in mine lol

  30. Exactly, you either GET it or you don't. I've had brilliant memorable drives in Ford Ka's and Transit van's, being in a great car whether its worth 2k or a million quid is just the icing on the cake.

Just popping out to the garage to make sure its still there, and for a shooting star's knee rub:wink:

  31. Did I mention my car was in evo mag 195 ?

    Oh , I did :worried:

  32. I have 195 in my pile on under the coffee table! Great hot hatch spread

Out of interest - how did you get your car into Evo?

  33. Fantastic effort, unfortunately for me as soon as I see bad weather my car day is over I can't stand getting the car that dirty.

I would love to go for more early morning blasts but the mrs insists in coming along with the baby and then complains when I get above 30mph, gutting.

  34. Just buy a push bike then. I've never understood what the deal is with people that do this. I like a clean car but not to the point where I wouldn't drive it. What's the point in having it if you don't use it.

  35. Luck , rather than judgement. I was on twitter when Jetro happened to tweet know anyone with a r26.

    The rest is history !

  36. Fair play.. I shall be on Jethro/Dickie's twitters like a hawk from now on!

    ^ +1

  37. Same thing here, wife and kids think 'going for a drive ' is a bit lame, I love it and any opportunity is taken up, and yes always giving it a second look as I walk away!
