What gain do you get from a decat ?

  1. Can somebody help me???????? My megane has a message that says check steering. What has caused this?? And how do i fix

    Back to topic , if I run a decat its potentially damaging without a remap? My cars never been mapped?
     
  4. I have and know lots of people who have too. Not on a Megane though.

    The fuelling may alter slightly but I doubt very much its enough to blow an engine.

    Anyone got any Afr's before and after a decat?
     
  5. You are going to have to do something catastrophic to knacker an engine guys in one hit. Like leave a vac pipe of an actuator. Or starve it of oil.

    Engines very rarely run then instant fail.

    Running lean means the engine runs hotter.
    Running lean lowers the resistance to detonation.

    Most signs that an engine is being degraded aren't seen. Till it goes bang.

    For me, prevention is better than cure. I would rather prevent the problem than replace the engine.
     
  6. I know its not a Megane but my old Golf 20v turbo has been running for over 8 years with a decat that was fitted after the remap.

    I know the current owner and it gets constantly abused.

    If I didn't fit the 250 turbo personally I wouldn't bother getting the map adjusted.
     
  7. A cheap easy way is go to your local rolling road and get them to run it to check afr's.
     
  8. plus why bother fitting a decat anyway if you're not going to spend an extra 120 sheets and get the most out of it!
     
  9. Could be waiting to fit other mods.
    would it only be £120 if you went to RSTuning and didn't already have one of their maps?
     
  10. Not last time i checked, Paul said he won't touch other peoples maps so you have to pay for a full map
     
  11. Mine was running with a decat and running rich, it also developed a slight misfire which still needs to be sorted by rs tuning. It also won't pass an MOT with decat unless you 'know someone'. But I have to say the sound with the decat is a lot better and it pops and bangs a lot more! I've also had the back box chop so it sounded lovely! After spending £300 getting a new cat on I'm almost tempted to decat it again and have it tuned to suit!

    Silly question but can you relocate a cat further down the system so you can easily swap between the two?

    I believe people do it on the clio's but wasn't sure if it was possible/was room on the megs
     
  13. yes.. some aftermarket exhausts with sports cat relocate it to the mid silencer area..
     
  14. I'm fitting the decat pipe right now.
    I broke 2 tools trying to unscrew two bolt of the turbo flange :mad:

    For now I'll go decat, but i plan to make a decat / sports cat system, so I can switch just unscrewing 4 bolts, under the car.
    Should be good for MOT etc.
