Turbo blankets

  1. What's people's opinions on turbo blankets? Seen a few videos on YouTube and they seem to dramatically reduce heat levels in the engine bay. I was thinking if getting one to help protect my carbon bonnet. Think it's worth a go?
     
  2. the heat has to go some where though, increase in water and oil temps due to the turbo keeping the heat in

  4. Heat in the turbo is a good thing, thermal velocity helps spool the turbo, not by much but it's better than nothing.

    The heat will only radiate out under the bonnet and heat things up anyway.

    I thought one of the main reasons Mercedes' F1 engine was so good this year was because they split the turbo in two and kept half of it out of the heat.
     
  7. turbo bearing is already silly hot, reg engine oil not designed to deal with abnormal heat, will only lead to premature failure
     
  8. Yeah the extra heat should spool the turbo quicker, more heat = more energy in the turbo.
    I havent looked at the F1 setup but i imagine they have the outlet out of the heat for a cooler inlet charge (only a guess).
    But a turbo blanket doesnt cover the whole turbo it should only cover the exhaust/ inlet side therefore in theory keeping the heat in the bit you need for quicker spool ups and decreased inlet temps (especially if the radiant heat is warming your intercooler etc)
     
  9. Yeah the turbo is silly hot but its designed for that, when engines get tested there glowing red/ white hot and that doesnt lead to premature failure
     
  10. My take on it was that the blanket covers hot side. Which is meant to get hot, keeps the cool side cooler and keeps the intake cooler as under bonnet temps are lower.

    So if oil temps are a problem hitting an oil cooler should negate any negative there correct?

    This is a blanket I fitted to the 3071 on my GT4.

    Definitely spooled a little faster.

    Im ringing them tomorrow to do my turbo hot side.

  21. Dont matter now as I found 2 small cracks in my spare one so just a blanket for me.

    Ordered it today but will probably take a week or two to arrive.
     
  22. I think you need to be realistic in the application of some of these devices in my opinion.

    A lot of the stuff has application in motorsport and personally I think it should stay there.

    For instance the turboblanket serves to keep the engine bay tidy asthetically but also keeps the heat in the turbo which will in turn heat oil and water quicker. It also may have longer lasting effects on oil if the car isnt left to cool sufficiently.

    The zircotec / heat shielding stuff is great , I am struggling to think and find any reasons not to get that. It is expensive is the only one I can find !

    Turbos are designed to run silly hot.

    Engine oil not designed to deal with abnormal heat?
    Get some correct oil that is.

    Based on what?

I use to use a turbo blanket on my gt3071r and 2871r and in both cases under bonnet temps went down, didn't notice quicker spool up but both turbos were running high boost so couldn't really tell, both my turbos ended up having cracked housings, can't say for certain it was the blankets retaining the heat but thought I'd mention it.
     
  27. Ceramic coating on the housing should also lower temps, that combined with the turbo blankets should see a big reduction of heat around the engine bay
     
  28. Ive seen countless turbos with cracked exhaust housings. Even found two cracks in my own today which came off a low mileage standard 250.

    Turbo blankets are to reduce heat loss in the housing not adding heat.

  30. Yes I know. Its always the exhaust side that cracks.

    First time ive seen the underside of a td04 exhaust side.
     
  32. My take on metal fatigue due to heat expansion, contracting is, if the metal heats quickly or cools quickly it will crack over time, especially cast iron. A turbo blanket will help prolong the life of the casting.
     

  33. I actually snapped an exhaust housing on a hybrid turbo on my last car due to metal fatigue.

    It did get some abuse and was running at nearly its maximum quoted boost fiqure.

    Which is why I fitted the Garrett and the turbo bkanket.
