Catback vs Turbo Back Exhaust

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by Smouse, Dec 30, 2014.

  1. So i'm thinking of getting a Milltek exhaust and have been looking at my options. (work is really busy over Christmas....... :rolleyes:smile:

Catback is straight forward enough, but turbo back (with sports cat) has left me with a couple of questions, as i've seen Milltek state it needs a stage 2 remap afterwards.

Is the remap advice just guidance or essential? (Some people seem to think you can get away without it) Are the gains worth double the cat back price (even without the cost of the remap added on)?

  2. Just means you're removing a restriction that the ECU may or may not compensate for, could mean the fueling might be out i.e running lean/rich but wouldn't really know without doing it and sitting it on a RR. I know it gives the Clio's a few problems and we found out mine was running quite lean at high rpm after fitting an intercooler.

  3. The thing that worries me is an exhaust manufacturer is referring to stages.

You can get away without a remap.

I would remap after a decat , but not an exhaust change.

  4. Surely a remap can only do good after a decat change even if it is a sports cat. Your removing restrictions you need to tell the engine that so it can perform to its full use. If you got a friendly garage decat all the way ha ha.

  5. Thanks buddy , thats what I was alluding to. Anything cat changing really wants a map - but I wouldnt bother with just a simple exhaust change.

  6. Ha ha no problem.

  7. Haha.

    Thanks for the replies all/advice.

They do sound awesome with a decat. Sure I could find a friendly garage if I looked hard enough..... Something to consider.

I know someone who had a decat and is still running a standard ECU with no issues. That's another thing that made me think I could get away with just an exhaust swap.

Suppose I can try it and map it at a later date if it causes any issues.

  8. You can run it with a standard ECU - you just have no idea if it is running rich or lean. Its a little dangerous if you ask me.

I always ask myself , cheaper to remap or cheaper to replace the engine ..

  9. More than valid point tbf

  10. Been running mine for 4 years with just a decat... Will be getting it mapped in the new year with henk.. Didn't realise it could be dangerous.. But that does explain why I can sometimes smell fuel (probably running a little rich)

  11. You smell "fuel" because you have removed your cat not because anything else.Car still running 14.7 afr on idle and part throttle. If anythink you are probable running a little leaner on WOT because of the better flow.

  12. Ah ok... Makes sense.. Remap Will sort that  lol
