hard pipe kit??

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by charlie1984, Dec 8, 2014.

  1. couple of questions really.. what are the benefits of the hard pipe kit.. and where to get one from.. i've read that the ktec ones crack?

  2. Forge hard pipe kit on ebay for £135 I think, although I don't really know what they do tbh

  3. No benefits i think, just looks really, might do something if your running mega boost i'd imagine. the OEM ones are pretty solid so doubt they suck in/ collapse under high boost.

  4. They also seem to snap their own brackets ..

  5. fair enough.. guess it's not needed ... i can use that money on something else  looking to treat myself to a mishimoto cooler.. and a fastchips remap

  6. I see it as another breathing mod like a bigger exhaust. Less restriction is always better for the turbo. Might not be noticeable to us but I bet the turbo has a bit less to do due to a lower resistance with the larger pipe.

  7. but then the smallest part is the turbo outlet anyway so using a bigger pipe is irrelevant really

  8. How big is the turbo inlet compared to the end of the pipe that connects to the airbox?

    Is that irrelevant too?

  9. What is the id of the standard turbo outlet?

What is the id of the standard pipe?

  10. The bigger pipe makes sure there is less boost drop Before going into the engine. Just ask Henk from fastchip to send you a datasheet of a megane with and without hard pipe kit. You will see Some difference altough it isn't much.

  11. I had a turbo blanket on my last car when i upgraded to a garrett 3071 and it spooled the turbo a little earlier.

Not much but there was a little stretch of road i only ever made 1.5bar before breaking after the blanket i made 1.7bar.

  12. Mine snapped the top bracket too. Easy fix with a decent P clip though.

  13. Yeah as Tiemen says its beneficial, When i asked Henk at fastchip about it he said it would definately help a stage 2 car, it was one of his recommended mods before going to stage 2

  14. Charlie1984 just saw your link. Dont pay that much you can get them for less than £20.

  15. Really? good ones? Lol I don't want it catching fire etc..

  16. Mine was perfect for over 18 months while I had the car. I still speak to the person who brought it 4 years ago and he hasn't said anything has happened to it and he would of if it had.

  17. You will need to look for internal wastegate ones.

    Mine was external.

  18. whats link to your cheapo ones?

  19. Haven't brought one for years but it was only a cheap one from ebay.
Heard the cheap ones didn't last but thought I'd try one anyway and it was perfect.

  20. Pipe width at our tuning level is horses for courses really.. Crawford perfomance (Ken Blocks Suburu etc) uses 2" pipework and acheives 700bhp..

Make from that what you will.

  21. That's like saying we dont nedd 2.0 litre engines for our power goals. Formula 1 only use 1.6 litres for 600 bhp.

  22. Not at all.

Its saying that these hard pipe kits dont offer any real measurabe performance advantage from what you could tell from the drivers seat. Or that you could conclusivly validate back to back on the rollers. Especially for the money. With the added issue of them fitting badly and breaking their own mounting hardware.

  23. It seems Henk from fastchip has measured a difference.Might not be able to feel it from the drivers seat but can you with an air filter or a cat back?

Mine is a perfect fit, never had a problem with it apart from breaking one small bracket which didn't make any difference, only noticed when I went to check my oil.

It all adds up in the end.

  24. In this hard pipe kit, the hoses and associated pipework are of 51mm diameter. This gives a big improvement on the restrictive 43mm standard pipes, which in places are quite restrictive.

So forge feel the standard pipes are restrictive in places?

  25. I am not sure I buy into the 2.5 inch pipes gaining anything. Why would motorsport be ruled by restrictors pre turbo ?

Its only Henk who reckons there is a gain .

I might add - I have standard pipe work and happily push over 300bhp in my meg.

  26. Surely the larger bores mean the turbo will have to work harder to fill the additional space to achieve the same boost? And much like fitting a larger cooler it will increase turbo lag?

  27. I think the actual volume it has to fill is negligible. I have run some daft sized intercoolers before on other cars and not noticed the lag. There will be a pressure drop I am sure , but not enough to be noticeable ?

  28. Plenty of people saying the standard pipes are restrictive, but with what evidence. How are they restrictive? In what way do they effect flow? The engine isn't suddenly using more air because the pipes are bigger!

There is so much more to this than 'bigger is better'. - Air speed, cylinder fill, throttle body diameter, boost levels, throttle response.

  29. If it was only RSTuning it would be took as gospel.

They aren't 2.5" they are only 2" iirc.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

  30. 100% agree !

  31. Yes but in fairness they do look nice ;-)

  32. 2 and 1/64 of an inch. 51mm.

Is it not right to try and challenge something ? I don't agree with what is being stated so trying to provide an alternative. I dont agree that 300ibft is the limiting factor on the meg either.

My car made good power. I would be interested to do a back to back comparison on a dyno if anyone wants to lend me the larger pipes ?

  33. If i can find my standard ones I will lend you mine. Be interested in this.

  34. On my gt4 1.1bar on the standard turbo was the considered safe level for a standard engine.

Mine made 1.75 bar on a garett 3071 on a standard engine and never missed a beat. I did have a lot of other mods though.

  35. Andy wouldn't these pipes be better tested an a 225 turbo'd car running stage 1 boost level. I would guess thats what most people are running.

Could do a comparison on yours also to see the difference.

  36. Would you say changing the pipe diameter is worse than installing a huge 90mm intercooler?

  37. Could test across the board ..

  38. Like the sound of that. Just need to get a few of us owners together with various mods. I will gladly use mine.
