Expert opinions on potential purchase please/anyone know this car?

Discussion in 'Megane Discussion' started by Pirran, Dec 2, 2014.

  1. Hi guys - I only joined last night (see welcome area for my first post) and am doing a bit of a rush buy on an r26 as I need wheels when I get back to the UK next week. Not ideal but I think something suitable may have already come up:

    http://www.pistonheads.com/classifi...ultsport-f1team-r26-285bhp-------2007/3045901

Any opinions / advice on the car / price would be welcome, as well as any previous owners and so on if they were forum members. The present owner has only had it a few months, and the mods were done by the previous owner. However the current owner seems a thoroughly nice chap who sounds like he has really cared for the car.

Thanks in advance for any intel/opinion

  2. Can you verify who mapped it ? I suspect KTEC , but I dont want to assume.
What tyres are on the car currently ?

It has a nice spec sheet of parts

  3. Looks like a decent spec!
Only bit that looks iffy is the 0-62

  4. You're right Andy - I emailed the seller and the remap was done by KTEC. The car has 4 new vreds on it.

Thanks Jocky - perhaps, but I'm not chasing numbers - with circa 285 ponies it should be fairly nippy.

Any other opinions/advice gratefully received - is it priced right - seems a smidge high to me.....

  5. Its got a good spec. I am not a fan of KTEC work personally.

I think there are two schools of thought. Buy a cheap one and do that parts yourself , or buy a sensibly priced one and all the parts are done.

I would personally buy the one with the parts done. less cost and hassle !

  6. Hi Andy - educate me - what's not to like about KTEC's work?

As I live overseas and am only in the UK for a few weeks at a time, messing about with cars is unfortunately not something I am able to indulge in, so it's definitely a case of the latter - ie like this one, get one with it all done. Do you reckon it's sensibly priced?

The fact its had ktec work done wouldn't be a point of joy for me.

  8. They are expensive and personally I have seen issues with some work carried out.

I am with Naith on this.

Price wise I suspect there is some room for manoeuvre

Bunch of monkeys. Overpriced product. Over reading on their rolling road. Dangerous maps for the engine.

  11. Thanks guys. Hmm well the first couple of posts (including your first one Andy!) were encouraging but the latter are putting me off a bit, which I suppose is what I asked for!

Have there been instances of KTEC-mapped engines going pop then? The problem I am facing is limited time in which to buy - and not being in the UK I can't bide my time, visit lots of cars and so on. Well, that and my desire to get something a bit fettled.

So is this a strong warning to walk away? The car will only be used for a few thousand miles a year tops.

I wouldn't see it as a negative that its been there just dont think its something special so to speak.

  13. Budget for another map and you will be laughin!

  14. Ok thanks Naith. Might not be the ultimate r26 but surely it will be more fun than a standard r26 won't it? Should sound nice as well as going nicely surely?

Who provides the gold standard in maps then for members on here, and how much are they? If I get this car it wouldn't be out of the question if you think it would make a big difference.

Thanks for your advice all - as you can tell I am more or less a greenhorn on r26s, despite having one on my "must own at one point" list for some time.....

  15. £345+vat from Paul @ RS Tuning.

  16. sweet cheers andy. It seems that the best regarded specialists for any brand I get involved in are up north!

  17. Get at least the £400 RS tuning map price knocked off and it could be a good one

  18. Go for it or at least go take a look mate

  19. seen this ad on the meganesport.net fb site. good spec, but like folk say you might be unlucky with the ktec map, but then again the ktec map might actually be an ok one :tongueout: get an rs if you can but id trust a henk one over ktec

  20. I've never heard of a K-tec map car let go, not sticking up for them but come on, they map loads of renaultsport cars

  21. @Duke - seller is sticking to the asking price and in no rush to sell, whereas I am in a rush to buy - not the best position to be in!

@Denbers - how does on tell a good KTEC map from a bad one? The owner has all the receipts, printouts etc so I can get them sent over. Also - didn't know about that FB page - have joined and see one or two other tempting cars for sale - including one with an rs map for 5850....

@Steve - cheers for the encouragement mate - I haven't written this one off yet!

  22. Had my Meg mapped and a new exhaust both from KTEC. Put 6k on the car since then and have had no issues whatsoever. I'm sure all places have the odd issue, but KTEC seem to get a lot of hate on here. I'd be interested to see the examples of all these bad maps/dangerous jobs they've done? They're highly reputable as a tuner and have that status for a reason.

As for their dyno.. had mine pushing 315bhp and 367lb/ft which I thought was a bit optimistic so had it dyno'd by my mate and on that it pulled 317bhp with 365lb/ft.. happy enough with both of those!

  23. Thanks Jocky. So far no concrete examples of bad experiences on this thread.....

  24. They dont tend to let go as the wind them upto 10 , then scale back to 8

I reckon on a non KTEC rollers that car is a 265bhp tops.

  25. Speak as you find, , , I had my Megane rs 250 cup done by Ktec in 2012 and put 22,000 on it and never missed a beat.

There have been a few Clios that have had overfueling, rev too high etc.

  27. I've seen an endless amount of ktech bodged jobs with a "that'll do" attitude. I've also experienced their awful aftersales.

I wouldn't say that anyone sets out to intentionally do a bad job. Just I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them.

Aggressive marketing telling small traders to either join them or get put out of businesses with exclusive selling rights through them.

But the car sounds cracking go for it.

  28. LOL thanks Chris and others. I'll only be putting a couple of thousand miles a year on the car, having said that I want something reliable.

I think I'll go and see it, with a view to getting it providing there are no surprises. Should I be putting down a deposit? When talking about Lotuses and M3s I know what a rare specced car is that is likely to be snapped up, but I don't know enough about r26s to know whether there is likely to be a lot of interest for this car at this price.

  29. Thing is with megs there are always plenty about in my opinion. I wouldn't use ktec however I wouldn't let it put me off a car. Personally though I always try buy standard, mine felt plenty quick enough standard so all I did was drop it on some cooksport springs and fit some spacers. Each to their own though and the linked car does look clean

  30. Where abouts in the midlands is it out of interest?

  31. It's 10mins drive from junction 4 of M5 or junction 2 of M42

Joeh - yes you're probably right, and my lotus is kept entirely standard, but for some reason I am more drawn to the fettled r26 examples.....

  32. That's my end. Let me know if you want me to have a look round it for a second opinion.

  33. Chris that's extremely generous of you mate, thanks ever so much. If it's not too much hassle then I would be really grateful for someone who knows what they are looking at to have a look at it - more of a first opinion than a second! I'll definitely owe you a few xmas brews if you are able to have a look for me.

The owner is off work today and tomorrow I think, then working from friday over the weekend and until next wednesday, so what with the early evenings I guess it's either today or tomorrow if you're to see it in daylight. Are you free at any point? If so I'll get in touch with him and ask if he'd mind.

Thanks once again for the kind offer.

  34. No worries. What's his address? Pm me and I can pop over either today or tomorrow depending on where he is

  35. Thanks Chris will PM you in just a minute

  36. When i got my megane it had just had a ktec induction, exhaust and intercooler fited. Ive since removed the induction kit only because it was too loud for my old ears.

I am very impressed with the quality and fit of all these parts.

  37. Thanks James

  38. Chris mate just tried PMing you again but your inbox is full and the system won't let me - could you pls delete a few messages?

  39. Sorry to bring the k-tec thing back again but only just seen this thread but there renowned over on cliosport as beeing pretty bad

    http://www.cliosport.net/forum/show...apping-AFR-logs-inside&highlight=ktec+map+bad

And i think theres plenty of others but i would not trust them with mapping my car, your only as good as your last job.......

Personnally i'd read through the threads above and draw your own conclusions, but there's several very well respected mappers saying that their dangerous, they even have the AFR graphs, ignition values etc so you can draw your own conclusions!

Personnaly i've used k-tec before (only mail order) and their service was very good, but i would not trust them with mapping my car, especially a custom map as that is what their renowned for being bad at!

  40. Looks like it's just Clio's!
