mid box chop

  1. hi all. well this is my first post on here and also new to the Megane. had it 4 weeks now and really enjoying it. few things to sort but will get there.

anyway onto topic, on a budget due to just buying the car Im thinking about doing the middle box chop but just wondering if it will do away with the turbo whistle as don't really want to lose it. any help would be great.

    cheers. Craig

  2. Yes mid box chop will lose the turbo whistle, if you want to keep the whistle but have that extra grunt get the back box chopped instead

  3. ok mate cheers for that I did wonder. I had thought about that but concerned it will sound like a tractor!!!

you won't get any extra grunt from either box being chopped. mid box chop makes the car roar more and sound raw. back box chop makes it pop a lot more.

  5. Loads of people have had the back box chop so that the whistle remains, me myself have the centre box done and must admit it does sound good and tbh I don't miss the whistle, it's been replaced with some pops which sound nuts at times

  6. You've also got to remember that these cars in general don't sound that loud anyway, my gf drove the car away from my work the other way week and I think that was the first time I've heard it when I've not been driving it, thought it sounded sweet

  7. mmmm decisions decisions. think if any I will go with middle box Im not so sure on back box. or just save for a system.

  8. Just had back box chop today great cheap mod if not wanting full exhaust system just yet.
Cant understand all the love for the whistle i cant stand the sound to be honest. Why does it even make this noise not heard any other cars make the noise reminds me of a belt squealing lol.

Anyway back box chop well worth it cost me £60

  9. Back box chop will increase noise and with pops and bangs whilst keeping the turbo whistle. Midbox chop is slightly louder with more pops and bangs but you lose the whistle and it does sound a bit like a tractor at idle. I had the back box chop for £80 and its the best mod I've done!

  10. Looking to get my mid box chop now, seeing as I lost the whistle when putting my air filter on.

Has anyone had both box's done and noticed it any louder then just the back box?

Top tip put down the rear seats and on full chat it sounds amazing

  11. Don't just put the seats down, take out the rear foldable carpet liner, the little storage liner beneath it and then the foam spare wheel holder....NOW you can hear all the pops and bangs!

  12. I'll shall be doing that tonight

Does removing the midbox not make it drone like a bugger on the motorway?

  14. Not at all. During normal driving you cannot tell the difference.

  15. Someone on here had both removed and it was really loud!!! Sounded like a bag of spanners at idle and they said it created loads of drone.

  16. Ah not good then. Bloke that done my back box chop said he'd charge me 30 for the middle so I'll see now

  17. It did sound stupidly loud, mental pops and bangs though! One of the boxes is fine imo, gives it some noise and gets peoples attention. Most 4pot cars sound pretty sh*t and always will do, I'd only go straight through if I had an R32 or larger engined car.

  18. I agree with you you there. Looked at some videos on YouTube when I was thinking about buying a 225. Wanted to do the middle box chop when I bought a 225, but my car allready had it done, and it is perfect for me for the time being.

I have a small video on YouTube of it recorded with a GoPro, if anyone's interested in a link to it?

  19. sorry guys call me stupid but when you say you had the middle or back box chopped, do you mean removed ??? I don't understand when you mean chopped ???? pls explain , and many thanks lol

  20. Yes they mean you chop the box out and replace it with similar size pipe to the exhaust! I've got a cat back scorpion with out the mid box and it sounds awesome!

  21. cheers for that minchy, so that means I can have twin twins coming out the bumper lol excellent

  22. I would be interested in the link mate if you post it here?

  23. I used to have both removed. Sounded rubbish when cold and at idle, but really good from inside the car when giving it some. It didn't drone much at all though, at motorway speeds it was barely noticeable.

I've now got a back box chop + decat and it actually sounds quite similar to the double chop, but much better at idle and a deeper, more meaty sound on boost.

Just remembered took a sound clip of mine with a double box chop and blanking plate. Post #31.

Only a quick video of it a couple of days after I bought the car, plan to do another one when I can.

Don't do both boxes, trust me.

  27. why not naith, what repaces the boxes when u get them copped?

  28. i went for mid box chop, then saved up for a system, i now have 3" k-tec decat and matching pipe all it has is a small box at the back nothing else from the turbo back and it awesome!!

  29. where do u guys go to gear the back box chop? i'd love to do this

its horrible, the popping on overrun is tiresome after 10 minutes, i had to sit behind a car like it all the way to lemans and back, ugh..!

always keep at least one box and decat it if you can..

  31. I think I would agree with this. Mine pops enough with just a mid box chop. Wouldn't want another box out. Doesn't need it.

  32. Most exhaust places should do it for about £50-£80. I had my centre box put back on recently before I decatted and it only cost £40.

  33. Removed all of what you said sounds amazing!

That's both boxes removed, the pops and bangs were fun for a little while but it became annoying and we put the center box back in! The drone was terrible and it sounded toneless, just tractor/blowing sound.

  35. that sounds naughty,

  36. I'm surprised at that, mine didn't drone one bit with both boxes removed but I'd agree that it was pretty toneless from outside the car.

With the centre box put back in and a decat it's now louder on boost than it was with both boxes off, at around 3k rpm it's really loud now. It doesn't drone though and the sound is definitely better and more meaty.

  37. Sounds good! Nice to hear someone Rev-matching on the down shifts

  38. Hi guys. I have just had the middle box removed and from inside the car i notice no difference although when i rev the car at idle it does the pops and bangs thing so im thinking of doing the back box too. Would this be wise as i dont want it too loud or droney. Also it sounds the same as standard at idle and i would like that to be a bit more noticable.

  39. I'm surprised at that. I had the back box chopped from my R26 and didn't notice much difference but thought the mid box would be louder - I had that chopped from my 250 and it was definitely louder.
