225 I bought a renault. More problems than i thought.

  1. Hi guys, first post, sadly a negative one

I have bought a 225 Megane RS, which has been remapped and had a few nice mods done to it, however I have come across a few problems in the last couple of days of ownership which is making me regret the decision more and more!

Currently the problems I have are:

Fuel leak, from what looks like either the tank or a fuel line
    Oil leak.
Knocking when turning the wheel stationary (already knew about this at the time of purchase, it appears to be the hub bearing?)
Overheating when stationary or in traffic (I think this is due to the fan not coming on, as when the air con is pressed i also cannot hear the fan turn on)

The major issues I want to get sorted is the overheating, and the fuel leak, as i dont fancy the car going up in flames!

I have no idea how renaults work, everything with this car is new to me, so help is much appreciated, or if anyone could point me to a Renault specialist who knows what they're doing!

  2. Where are you based?

  3. That would help i suppose haha.

    In Warrington, North West.

  4. Did you buy private or from dealer?

You can't really knock the car or the maker for faults you knew about before buying the car - that's like buying a boat with a hole in it then blaming the boat maker when it sinks!

Get the fuel leak traced and sorted firstly then the car is safe, the hub bearings are not too costly if it is that, I'm not sure what you mean by the air con not starting the fan? the air con could be a few things if it's not working, first check is if it needs re-gassing.

you should be able to tell if the the temp sensor is not working or if it's the fan not engaging for some reason.

As above was it a dealer or private?

  6. I'm in St. Helens if you get stuck mate, will have a look at it for you.
doesn't sound like major problems to be fair mate.

  7. Private sale unfortunately. I was only made aware of the bearing issue. Bugger, shame because I really enjoy the car, it's just these problems that are letting it down!

Sorry I didn't put that across the clearest, my radiator fan isn't turning on, so the car is overheating when stationary for a short period of time. I have diagnosed this by trying to turn the air con on, which should turn on the radiator fan.

  8. I'm from Warrington so not too far. The fuel leak appears to be coming from above the tank.

  9. I had a similar experience when I got my 230. The overheating probably isn't overheating, and you can't hear the fan unless you have the bonnet up and your head under it! Other than that, they are all fairly small things that with persistence and a bit of spare money will be good as new and you can enjoy the car! I felt crap when I spent all my money on a car and then threw £1500 at it to get the unseen bits fixed! Stick with it!

  10. I hope that if i spend a bit of money to sort the problems i can fully start enjoying it!

EML light came on today, however plugged in my fault reader and came back with a CAT issue, presumably due to the decat on it..

Does anyone know of any Megane specialists in the Northwest area? closer to Warrington the better.

  11. I'm in Warrington too!

The most local Renaultsport specialist to us is Birchdown in Malpas, but I always go to Fred at BTM in Birmingham because I know him.

  12. Have you checked the coolant level? The radiators are prone to leaking on these and that could be the source of the apparent over-heating issues you've got.

Decat will usually bring on the light so don't worry to much about that.

Re specialists - take it to Birchdown as above - no question. The guys are brilliant and you'd be mental to take it anywhere else within 50-odd miles of Warrington.

  13. I've had a back box chop and the emissions light comes on every 3 weeks or so but doesn't affect how it drives! Keep the coolant topped up though because some weeks mine doesn't use any and some weeks you can do 50 miles and it's all gone!

  14. I feel your pain mate, I have had the R26 just under 3 weeks now and my speedo is like a xmas tree ABS/ESP warning lights, emission warning light and also had a CV boot pop off dropping its greasy load everywhere!

Car is going back to the dealer this weekend hopefully it dont take them too long to fix it as they dont have a courtesy car to give me so be using public transport for work not my favorite thing!

  15. Coolant's fine. I had it plugged in before via OBD and watched the temperature creep up to 101 degrees, and the fan did not come on, so something amiss there.

From what ive gathered from other threads i have read, reccomending Birchdown, i think these are the guys i need to go to. Does anyone know if they're open on Saturdays? doesnt appear to mention working hours on the website.

  16. Its really annoying, i had a boost hose pop off at the intake before, caused the car to lose major power and then idling at 3K rpm while sat at traffic lights! turns out the boost pipe connector was broke and cable ties have been used to hold it in place. I had to use cable ties to fix it!

Also discovered that two of the coil packs are not bolted in, as they have a snapped bolt in the hole for them, so they are just loose!

  17. Since buying mine jn July I had to clean injectors immediately, fit new springs and cv boots all round and now it needs a hub bearing.

They don't age particularly well that's for sure.

Are you lot buying cars blindfolded?

  19. That's not right at all!

It shouldn't be using any, ever!

  20. I was going to ask the same!

Apart from consumables my car has been spot on. Touch wood.

There is something to be said for buying the best example you can afford.

  21. I knew the car had an issue with bearings, and hesistant starting half the time, I was happy with these.

Unfortunately the other issues i didn't notice when looking and purchasing :worried:

  22. Daz. I'm on my 3rd Megane now and haven't had any of the above problems. Pays to read up before you buy.

  23. Where in Warrington are you Dean?

  24. Try to return the car. Buy one from forum. People on here look after their cars so you will not get unpleasant surprise.

  25. Ive just made the move to Manc and asked people the same and hear theres a specialist in Accrington, i dont recall the name tho and I hear people use BTM in Birmingham.

I still use RST in Leeds as its much closer and means I dont have to drive to Birmingham . RST tend to be very busy these days but Paul has refered me to his dads garage for small repairs and ive always found them to be bob on.

    Si

  26. I think the specialist in Accrington is more of a general Renault breakers who will work on an RS, but not the same level as Birchdown, RST, or BTM - all of which are highly recommended.

OP - I don't think Birchdown is open at weekends but best to give them a call and check.

  27. Over 5 years of RenaultSport ownership and I've just had my first issue with an engine. (Don't know what's wrong, car is losing power and going into limp mode so it's in with Mark Black later this week).

Other than that I've had the usual hub bearing, drop link and driveshaft issues. Apart from normal maintenance I doubt I've spent a grand on repairs in 5 years. (That might change on Friday ).

the issue is, like many sporty cars some of them get ragged to death and not looked after properly.

The specialist in Accrington is for parts really

  29. Sankey area, you?

  30. I've tried to contact the guy, he's ignored my messages, so looks like its now my problem to sort all this out!

  31. I've spoken to Birchdown, nice bloke. Listed all my current issues, just need to get it booked in. And they offered a courtesy car FOC too, which is extremely useful!

  32. It's got a slight rad leak so when it sits in stop start traffic it steams it all away!

  33. I'm in Sankey as well mate, small world! How much did you pay for your car? If you don't mind me asking

  34. Not far away, Old Hall

The radiators are pretty weak on the end tanks at the bottom. Easy enough to change though.

  35. Never seen you guys around to be honest! I was probably too busy driving around ignoring all Renaults in my old Corsa VXR

  36. I agree, it's just the £500 bit that's not so easy at the moment!

  37. your both not far from me, live in rainford but work at fiddlers!

  38. Get one second hand mate.

  39. Surely it's better to get a new alloy one that will last the life of the car than to get one that may or may not be okay but will still cost you? Do you know anywhere I could get a decent one?

  40. Try Hills in Skelm mate.
