Dual Mass Flywheel vs Single Mass Flywheel - Resale Value & Wear on Transmission

My clutch is starting to slip/judder on my R26 and the car's only done around 37k miles. I'm hoping to book it in with Mark Black for the R26.R Clutch in the next week or so, but was questioning whether I should go for the Dual Mass (DMF) or Single Mass flywheel kit (SMF).

From what I've read, the DMF is designed to deal with modern turbo engines to absorb some of the instant torque changes, take out vibration and also offer some give/slack. This is therefore more likely to fail in the future as the connection between the plates is tends to degrade over time.

The benefits of a SMT sound good - longer life, lighter flywheel etc - but will the lack of “give” put more strain on the rest of the transmission? If so, is it actually better value for money in the long run to stick with the DMF? I also hear that the EMS will flag up a fault as the SMF is much lighter.

My second concern is that the SMF would actually be worse for resale value. Would you prefer a car that had the single or the double flywheel?

A long post I know, but would be great for some thoughts. Thanks

  2. Stick the SMF in it .

    Dont look back.

  3. As above smf all the way on a mk2. Mark to source and fit. The end

I'm switching to SMF in the next month or so. Looking forward to it.

I would go for a SMF. If I was buying a car and it had a SMF I would go for that over one without.

  6. So if a light comes on then how is it removed ?

  7. It can be mapped out Steve. However mine never came on in 7 months of driving.

  8. Paul at rstuning can map it out as Corey said
since having mine done around 4-5 months ago now my light hasn't come on either and touch wood it won't.
I didn't think it was the weight that caused it to flag up the eml, I thought it was something to do with the ring gear wasn't it? could be wrong of course lol.

Definitely worth going for though, would recommend it to anyone in the position of needing to buy a flywheel. The bite on the clutch is a lot sharper so you'll need to get used to that but overall a nice improvement.
Most certainly wouldn't hinder resale value as mentioned above though mate, if you have a dig back so,embody on here actually did a really good write up/review of how he found the change and there was a good few pages of other people's opinions and views on it, so may be worth trying to find this if you wanted a bit more info.

  9. It attracted me to my car as it was one less thing to go wrong. However, my Helix clutch is HEAVY!

  10. I have helix organic and flywheel, yes it might be slightly heavier than std but what a smf also gives is engine breaking. Would never go back.

  11. My EML came on coming home from getting Mark Black to do my SMF swap, I reset it with my OBD cable and it hasnt come on since!

  12. Slightly heavier? My fiancé refuses to drive my car.

  13. I am looking to get this set up fitted by Mark soon.

Tel how is your car going? still strong after that work before? would love a hybrid!

  14. Don't tell everyone or they all get one!
Win win that is, nothing worse with trying to get in car, seat is 2" away from steering wheel, wheels are curbed and out of fuel.

Thanks for all the advice everyone, SMF it is then by the sound of things!

  16. Cant be that heavy as its a hydraulic surely?

  17. Its noticeably heavier.

  18. Well this has helped eliminate any doubt when it's clutch time next year. Cheers gents

  19. Woah, Tubes.

  20. You want to he lucky I'm not pulling the clutch put of the one on the drive mate whilst it's stood!

  21. If the SMF is so much better, how come Renault bothered with the extra expense of fitting a DMF in the first place?

  22. Probably because they have undesirable side effects for the mass market, DMF makes the car very nice and smooth to drive every day.

  23. I would never use a SMF and solid clutchplate.

Curve ball... Would any of you out one is a diesel 175?

  25. I was going to fit a smf until I drove my mates leon fr with one fitted.

It's not like the clutch gets changed every year. Most people will only change it once at most during their ownership.

  26. Mine's done loads of miles on a SMF. I doubt there are any major gearbox issues to be had, unless you like hard launches.

The helix clutch is a cunt though.
