250 Panel filters

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by GrumpyTwig, Sep 9, 2014.

  1. What options are there for panel filters on the mk3? I can find pipercross (had one on the Clio, it fell apart and the rubber split) and a K&N (leaning towards) but what else is there?

Not really looking to go to the extent of replacing the OEM airbox atm so just a free flowing filter to go with the IC before it gets mapped.

  2. I'll be ordering a BMC one in the next day or so. Seems to have good reviews. FB575/20 is the part number

  3. I've got a BMC FB575/20 in mine.. Seems to work out fine and fitment is spot on..

  4. Pipercross on mine, cant say it fell apart, had one on the clio aswel, that didnt fall apart either.

  5. I opted for the BMC as it seemed most avaliable. Doubt there's little to any difference between them performance wise.

  6. Thanks all, opted for the BMC filter. Seems pretty well made and fitted pretty well, shitty Renault design making it a pig to get the filter out aside....

  7. Yer the french tuners use BMC too so prob best bet.

What was tough about it, is it not like the mk2, two screws and pull up?

  8. Access is pretty tricky as the screws are angled down and the battery is in the way even removing a lot of the trim. Resorted to a screw bit in some vise grips. Seems way harder than it should be.

  9. Sounds like you are making hard work of it, not got an extension or ratchet?

  10. Angled screwdriver

  11. Or one of those screwdriver 'bits' using an open ended spanner on it

  12. I've got the pipercross in mine, had one in my clio aswel. Fits well and snorts nice

  13. Definitely notice more noise, can hear the Turbo and recirc.

  14. Did you take out the foam?

  15. Yep,

  16. Sounds far better in the cabin with the foam out

  17. Don't suppose anyone knows if the filter is the same size as an R26 one? Got my old itg panel filter in the garage and wondered if I could use it in the 265.

  18. My pipercross is for 225/230, had no problems

  19. The standard filter is a really good cotton one anyway [not restrictive paper as found on some sites for a couple of quid]
Worth just getting standard and changing every year or less as I do. No difference in power gains.
My last was on E bay [did not sell cost me £6] The latest off e bay brand new again in box cotton gauze type RS 250/265 was £9 inc delivery.[Again no bidders.]

No one wants then as they are so dear [£30 plus] when the can get the cheapo paper for less. 5 minute fit.
I have had all the K&N and Pipercross and worst was the foam one covered in thick clear Gunk which dribbled everywhere after I took soundproofing out. [from Prodrive]

    Cheers Andy

  20. Good to know cheers Andy!

  21. Don't want to start a new thread over it and not meaning to hijack.

I fitted my K&N filter and went for a drive. When I lift off the gas pedal at 3k+ revs I'm getting a hydraulic almost darth fader sound from both the brake and the gas pedal. I normally have the radio on so not sure if its a new sound or not. Is this to do with the filter or pedals haha. I have removed the insulation a while ago

  22. Does it sound a bit like this but muffled and quieter? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwXQjMgqJDU

It's just noise that was masked by the foam AND the thicker oem filter that has a lot of mass and thickness to it so you don't hear it.

  23. Maybe a little bit like that, it sounds like its from the passenger footwell rather than drivers side so I guess it must be air filter. Not sure if I like it or not

  24. Air dumping through the recirc valve, you will hear it in the passenger footwell as thats where the sound generator setup goes to through the bulkhead

  25. Great thanks for the replys

  26. what's that?

  27. .

  28. There's a pipe that goes from the intake to the bulk head that pipes engine/intake noise into the cabin, the mk3 Clio has it and the Ford ST/RS's all have a similar thing.

  29. really? I wonder if it's also on a left hand drive like mine.. I don't really hear any intake noise unless I roll down the windows..

  30. Yeh if you look at the throttle body next to the batter at the front of the engine bay theres a pipe that come off the induction hose that goes into a plastic bell shaped object then off into the bulkhead, from what grumpytwig says unless you take the foam out tue airbox and fit a panel filter you wont hear it. I did mine on the day i picked it up so wasnt sure if it dumped/sounds was there before.
