Drivers side CV joint . . . OUCH!!!

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by richmeg, Oct 19, 2013.

  1. Things I'm thinking are
hub refurb with new wheel bearing
top mounts clicking with all the weight on it even though they don't turn they are basically plastic
    Or brake disc

  2. Anyone solved this

  3. Bumping this.

There seems to be a lot of people with this issue and a lot of potentially wasted money being spent trying to find a solution, myself having wasted £200 on a drive shaft.

Surely somebody can get to the bottom of this and maybe provide a cheap working solution that could net them a fair amount of work @Mark Black

  4. Ignore, phone posted by itself!

  5. Nope, I tore mine down this weekend and had a good prod/poke around, I could see nothing untoward.

It's difficult due to it only occurring under load and moving, hardly the best conditions for diagnosing a fault. I was going forward and back on lock so much at the end of the street the neighbours think I'm crazy, and in true Megane style...the CV boot clip failed and the boot slipped off! Good job I noticed and its easy to replace!

  6. LOL that's exactly what I was doing today (the forward and back bit) with exactly the same thoughts.

I wish you hadn't said the clip came off though as I'm going to have to check that now n the morning for piece of mind

Good call on it being only under load though - dipping the clutch seems to stop it which leads me to think drive shaft, but I've changed that.

Is everybody having this issue saying it's the off side and maybe it's not???

  7. I too decided it was driveshaft related...until you replaced yours .

It's 100% only under load, I've thundered round J18 M60/M62 (NSL roundabout in Manchester) with the window open; the noise is there on the gas but totally silent coasting round at speed (coasting round a bend at speed is not an ideal for good car control...just in case people are going to try it, be careful!).

I'm going to change the lower ball joint(s) now we know these can be changed for next-to-nowt, I'm certain its going to be shot anyway (after nearly 8 years on the car), so I won't be too enraged if the problem continues!

Oh and deffo check your clip if you've been going back and forth on lock

  8. Did you have any joy with this

  9. Yep, it was the drivers side drive shaft.

Both CV joints (hub and box sides) had play in them, not enough to knock, but was the source of the ticking.

I did replace the ball joint, stabiliser link bar and strut; however when I locked the driveshaft in vices on the bench it did have play in it, the new one was absolutely solid. I'm certain it was the driveshaft and not the other parts.

  10. I Need help on this issue as I am experiencing myself.

Glad i researched this before creating a new post. I am having the same issue as everyone is describing here, clicking, rattling noise at low speeds going round corner e.g. When turning from a junction and roundabouts.

It seems to be from the drivers side but after spending over £200 it still does it. There seems to be many thoughts on what it is - CV joint, boot clip, driveshaft but I thought id resurrect this thread to get a definitive answer before ordering any more parts or wasting time and money. So I'd appreciate any updates from you all as to how you solved your rattle

    cheers

  11. New driveshaft fixed mine.

  12. Yup, just buy a whole new driveshaft

A new shaft is only £160 from Renault .. I just bought one.

  14. Are we talking both drive shafts or just off side.

I'll check the drive shaft boot lid so see if that's loose again, I have had grease splatter around the wheel about 6 months ago so whether it's just grinding now its low on grease ....

  15. where did you get yours replaced?

  16. Got the part from Ads on here and fitted it myself

  17. Oh I see, I only asked coz took it to renault Manchester for diagnostics and they want £700 to replace.

  19. Sounds like lsd to me

  20. Going to have to get under my r26 after work tomorrow as I'm starting to get this clicking noise while cornering aswel :worried:

Quick question, where abouts do I put the gearbox oil in? Planning on changing the oil this weekend

easiest way I found (others may disagree) is through the wheel arch, remove the front inner liner and then remove the metal plate and behind that you'll see either a white or black plastic wing nut.

  22. How easy is it to change these? Is it a full day job for both sides?

Nice suggestion about the CV joint, and i checked the submitted link of the automotive parts and its very useful for the workshop holders and in other ways for the vehicle holders, nice sharing.

  24. You HAVE to be a bot!

  25. Agreed.
