250 Flickering Xenons

  1. Has anyone had problems with their xenon headlights flickering?
I first noticed it a month or so ago and my pal told me it was the passenger side headlight. Now I think both headlights are doing it.
I read somewhere it is most likely to be the ballasts but it could also be a sign that the bulbs are on they way out.
Has anyone replaced the ballasts? If so how much did the cost?

  2. This happened to my 225 and it was the ballasts that needed replaced.

I can't remember how much they were but I remember feeling violated after I bought them with the price of the bloody things lol

  3. This happened with my 225 as well.

The lights would even turn off (one at a time) every now and then whilst driving. Highly annoying.

I managed to get hold of a new set of igniters, and cables that go from the igniter to the ballast (PH1 225 headlights differ I believe as they have a ballast mounted in each headlight, so the cables are irrelevant) and bulbs.

Fixed the problem. Haven't had a single flicker or off in a few months now!

I suspect it was the bulbs at fault in my case. Definitely worth changing them and seeing if it fixes the problem, it's the cheapest option if nothing else.

Mine have done this now too. One flickers and one is off. Gonna get bulbs and hopefully it'll sort it as I can't be arsed with igniters.

  5. I'll email ads and get a price for the ballasts. I'm emailing every month now for prices for this and that.

  6. It could be the self leveling sensor that's at fault. It's worth checking (it should be on the nsf bottom arm)

  7. Ballast are £210 each and bulbs £110 each.

The lower ball joint needs replaced I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

I'll hold off till that's sorted before spending £££s

  8. .

  9. Ouch.

I would definitely, definitely swap the bulbs first before anything else.

Bugger buying them from Renault too. Pick up some OSRAM ones, get them a hell of a lot cheaper than £110 each!

Link to osrams. Fcuk Renaults prices...

  11. The om bulbs should come with a lifetime warranty from Renault !!!!!!

  12. It's the driver side that's flickering, I followed my friends home after training tonight.
It's been drivers side from the start, it's also the side the ball joint really needs replaced in.
Is there a sensor on the O/S?
How easy is it to swap the ballasts over?

  13. There's a levelling sensor on all 4 wheels.

  14. Doubt theres a sensor on all four wheels, usually a sensor on the front subframe, and a sensor on the rear beam. Alignment motor could of come loose? In brought some 6000k replacements on ebay for £30.

  15. What colour are they putting out? Are they lighting up more of the road?

I'm happy with the colour I have but want a bit more output too but I only want to change them if I have to.

  16. i changed my sidelights to led, and with the xenons being more yellow it looked odd after they warmed up, so changed the xenons to 6000k, more white then blue but look spot on, i wouldnt say brighter more like it makes the area ahead look more sharper more defined. well worth the upgarde in my eyes

  17. I had changed my side lights at the start of the year and totally forgot about the rear bolt sheering in half upon removal and with having the locating pin holding it in place I thought it would be fine.

I attempted to drill it out but failed so I had to use a self taper to secure it last night and went out a drive in the dark.
Both headlights light up the road as they should no flicker evident whilst driving on the road. What I did is that on road signs they flicker/bouncing but it's no evident on the road ahead. This was the first really dark night I have been out in as well and pasted a few cars over the hilly back road, I've never been flashed by on coming vehicles so I wonder if it is just related to the ball joint needing replaced or one of these things I'll just have to live with.

yeah, its a common issue with the Xenon lights,i repaired these lights many times in my workshop but if these lights are of high quality so this problem get not mattered, but this flickering issue is also able to fix so take it to your nearby electrician which knows well about it.

On a side note where's the fuse for the xenons? Glovebox or enginebay?

Engine bay. That proper pain in the ass location that means it comes out upside down. Battery out job.

I have no battery in my enginebay but still don't have a clue where the bastardo is. Both mine are out and they don't even whir to check ride height so I'm guessing it's a fuse issue. Or correct me if I'm wrong maybe they don't self adjust if the bulbs out?

When looking at the engine bay, it's on the right. Take a look through "what have you done to your car today". Pretty sure I saw someone put pics in there not too long ago.

  23. After having had both lower swivel hub ball joints replaced the flickering has stopped but now my headlights don't seem to project as far as they did. Is there a simple solution of just adjusting the sensors?

  24. There are white cross head/allen key screws either side on back of lights accessed just behind the cross beam bonnet slam panel. Inner pair are vertical, outer horizontal.
Line up car in front of a wall and see as you adjust. Screw in/down/clockwise to go down. Opposite for up. From memory last week.
    Cheers Andy

  25. Took the car back to Rentec this morning. The lights were low and on inspection the level sensor was broken. They must have damaged it whilst refitting the hub after doing the ball joints. They will order a replacement and get it sorted.
