R26 Just fitted cooksports with suspension and steering refresh

  1. and what a difference! The car feels so much more positive in the corners with the cooksport springs. It is now showing up the old tyres on the rear.

If you get the chance, I would really recommend getting a set of the cooksport springs fitted

  2. Did you fit them yourself mate? Much of a faff?

  3. Nah, I paid someone else to do it. I didn't fancy doing it on the drive and I am sure I would end up buying a pile of new tools to get it done! On my end, was 4 hours labour all in to get it done at the garage.

  4. Agreed mate, mine was feeling dodgy at speeds and in the bends so went down the same route as yourself, I done TRE's, hub links, drop links, wishbones, cooksport springs and new pilot super sports, my god what a difference, totally different car

I done the work myself and when fitting the springs I was shocked to find the both rear springs snapped in the bottom rubber boots

Good mod, bet it feels like a new car!

  6. That's good to read this! How much did it cost all in if you don't mind me asking I'm planning to do this in the new year myself

  7. Wasn't too bad all in I think, haven't really added it up to avoid figuring it out! Suspect it was about £800 or thereabouts for the springs, dampers, top mounts, inner & outer steering arms, steering rack bush, fitting and tracking.

To be honest, the top mounts that came off weren't all that bad and probably could've been re-used (my car has 42k miles and is an '08 R26). Think they are about £40 each..

The inner and out steering arms seemed ok and there wasn't any obvious free play in the joints. I had the arms replaced as I had a warning on my MOT on free play in the rack that the steering rack bush should have fixed, and I didn't see the point in taking them off and not renewing. The steering arms came in at £120 I think..

So you could probably save a few quid and take a chance if you don't want to spend all that amount. That said the difference in the steering and feel of the car with all this work done is brilliant! I had my lower swivel hub bearings done last year and that sorted out the wonky tracking under heavy acceleration, and this refresh has tightened up the steering and made it feel really positive! It could be just the improvement from the Cooksport springs mind you

When I get back home later I will stick up the prices I paid exactly, they are just Ads best (as usual) prices!

  8. Am I right in thinking the top mounts don't rotate with bearings on these cars as the strut sits still and the hub rotates on its joints instead. If so why do so many people go to the effort of changing the top mount? Surely it's just a rubber joint to the chassis?

  9. Nah, the top mounts do have a bearing in them in these cars. That's the only reason I changed mine, but when the old ones came off they weren't all that bad.

Actually, I should get my old R26 suspension up here for sale. Don't really want it sitting in my garage
