Temp gauge/sender/thurmastat help please

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by Steve1, May 6, 2014.

  1. 8 months ago I had a problem where the temp needle shot up on a track day, popped over to Birchdown who fitted a new thurmastat since then all has been fine, today at donington all was fine in the morning, this afternoon 3rd lap so nothing major with the revs as there never is as i never ever go near the limiter it happened again, needle shot up so slowed right down and it dropped straight away back to normal, came in and let it stand, 1.5 hours later sent back out did 6 laps and all was fine again, any ideas what this could be please .
    thanks

  2. Air lock, try running it without the cap on to let it blow some air out.

  3. What radiator you got fitted to the car mate?
you could have a sticking thermostat...pretty unlikely to have a air lock unless youve changed the coolant or have a leak?

  4. Fitted a new rad a year ago from euro car parts , at the time I checked with adds and he said it was the same make as a genuine part , fluid/coolant has never gone down

  5. Also heater in car works fine , we checked the bleed screw on the pipe and coolant came out but unsure where the bleed one is on yeh thurmastat

  6. That's what happened with me with the ecp rad so I went alloy rad.

  7. My moneys on the radiator, as you only got the issues after fitting a spurious part, but could be a thermostat or broken impeller blades on the water pump :/

  8. Erm, Steven the water pump was fitted after the 1st time it happened as mark black did the cam belt job , maybe the rad then , strange

  9. It's also had 1 new thurmastat as I said, surely not another ones gone, so why will it be the rad , what can go wrong with it, it's fine in normal road use and traffic ?

  10. The rad isn't as good as cooling as the oe rad. So when pushing on it creeps up.

The bolt circled in red is the other bleed screw.

  12. Iv fitted 2 thermostats to my megane now! First one was a genuine part and hardly lasted a year as the seal split, now i use a spurious one and been fine for 2.5 years now.

the radiator could cause a problem if the core isnt up to scratch.
Strange how its fine for 6 laps, but boils after 2 laps other times...

  13. Mine use to get hot at around 100 on the ecp rad.

  14. That's why I was thinking a sender, I may as well put a new thurmastat , temp sender and a new rad on , should be job done then , Steven where did you get your thurmastat from

  15. Cheers Dan

  16. I got mine from eurocarparts mate.
now if your changing the radiator do you fit a alloy or standard one?

  17. Shouldnt be a problem with a genuine Renault part, surely

  18. Is it an uprated item then Steven

  19. It's not up rated, just seems to have a better seal and has lasted longer than genuine items

  20. Well I'll be ordering genuine items , that should cure it. Thanks for your help
