Hi guys, picked my megane 225 up today and love it! only main issue is the gear stick is pretty stiff and doesn't ping back to the centre like it should. Haven't looked through all the docs yet but would some gearbox oil sort this or could the spring be gone, any ideas?
The selector mechanism probably needs a clean or the bush bored out slightly. Theres a guide somewhere.
well putting it in each gear is fine and smooth its just the actual moving left to right that is a struggle, i hope theres no permanent damage
As above it will be the selector , it's under an hours job and will cost nothing but your time if you handy with a spanner
Won't be the oil and won't be any damage, selector will need cleaning, my mate has just done his today
I helped a mate fix his the other day the nylon bush in the selector mechanism on top of the gearbox swells up and it can't move freely we disassembled the linkage and drilled the hole out to 10mm it now works a treat now and it's a recon ably straightforward fix shame you so far or I'd help you out
I was us that figured out how to fix this problem..it used to be a new acctuator to solve it before we disassembled the mechanism to find out what the problem was. Seeing as you are only in dorset, and me being in devon, you could drive to me and i can remove the actuator and sort this out..i also create the shortshift for the meganesport..and seeing as the actuator will be out of the car,it would be a ideal time to fit one,if you drive to me.
^^^ as above is probably the best idea I diagnosed the problem by searching the forums and I was fitting a short shift to my own meg car at the same time so we had an idea what we were doing lol Andrew will definately be your best bet the short shift is probably the best mod you can do on your car for the price anyway
hi andy, thanks for the offer, definitely interested in doing this, so the fact the gear stick doesn't move left and right can be due to this issue? also what is the benefit of fitting a short shifter?
The gear stick has a shorter throw, the way it should of left the factory , just take Andrew up on his offer , you'll be in safe hands
thats exactly what my mates was like and it's like new after we eased the linkage the shifter just gives a shorter more precise gear change you won't be disappointed IMO
cheers for the info mate, i know nothing really about gear boxes, what causes it to sort of seize up then? and when you say eased the linkage what do you mean and how does that stop it from being stuck and stiff? sorry if this seems like a stupid question I am just overly worrying about mine as I only got it today
There is a nylon bush in the linkage which a metal bar slides through after time it can swell making it difficult for the bar to move freely we just disassembled it and drilled the inside of the bush out back to the standard size it's nothing to worry about you must get new car paranoia like myself lol
haha i definitely have new car paranoia, sorry for so many questions but how do you get to this bush then? and did you know what the standard size to drill it to was or just guestimated?
You are new to meganesport ownership,so you wouldnt have heard about the shortshift mod yet,but it is a world renowned modification. I have fitted them to almost every car in the country as well as sold them to many overseas owners in australia, poland france etc. The actuator thats causing your problem is bolted into the top of the gearbox, and has to be removed to sort out,it gets stiff because the nylon bush that is supposed to allow a metal shaft to glide has expanded and got to tight to the shaft, this then doesnt allow the moving parts to act freely, causing this stiffness and non-centering. Its a 1 hour job for us to remove the actuator to hone out the bush and re-grease the entire mechanism..while its out,the metal bar on the top that selects gears is modified to make your gearshift much more positive and a far shorter throw..you have probally noticed how long winded and vague the gearshift is..this will vastly improve the entire action. There is a shortshift fitment guide in the `how to` section on here so you can see whats involved. Driving to me will be the best thing if you are not confident, many members have..and it will only cost you £80 to do all the work including the shortshift and actuator refurb. You must do this sooner rather than later..at the moment your gearbox cable is under a lot of strain due to the restriction, and will in time stretch and worst case snap..

Thread bump! My gearlever gets stiff left to right and wont centre after a longish trip - now I know the gearbox isn't knackered!
Bump again. I also have this issue. I'll take that if I remove the actuator, That nylon bush is under that ?
classic problem.Gear actuator in the top of the gearbox needs overhauling. contact Phil watkins on the facebook page, and he will sort you out with a refurbed unit, with a shortshift, that will utterly transform the throw and feel.
Done mine Today. Not hard if your handy with a spanner. Remove battery. Remove Battery tray. Remove ECU. Dissconnect cable's. remove circlip. remove the shaft , and use a 10mm reamer to ream it out. grease and re-build. Not need to remover actuator. Only got one pic of the 10mm hand reamer in the bush. Top Tip don't drop the circlip like I did.
