Hi, I'm looking to buy a replacement air filter as I have heard these can give some improvements. Any recommendations on what one to go for? This is for a 250. Also what do you get out of it? Bit better noise ? Apologies if in the wrong section. Cheers Josh
You won't get any more noise or performance with a panel filter, an induction kit will give you more noise but so will pulling out the foam from the air box. The standard air box on these cars is about as good as it gets mate.
I get a little more noise in terms of hearing a whooshing noise now with a BMC filter over the original filter, less restrictive I guess. I left the foam in myself. BMC isn't the cheapest but fits perfectly and will be good for a few miles as it's serviceable rather than chucking it. No real known power improvements I'd guess it breaths a little better so make get the odd bhp but it certainly isn't noticeable to me.
I've also had a BMC fitted for the past year and also left the foam inside the airbox. I've just purchased a cleaning kit and plan to give it a wash and regrease soon.
I fitted a pipercross panel filter and removed the foam insulation, got a nice induction noise, anymore then standard i dont know as i did it straight after picking it up.
I fitted BMC and removed the foam and didn't notice any induction noise increase, if it's there it's bloody quiet. On the point of induction kits, forum sheep always immediately condemn them over OEM setups and although this can be the case some IKs do make some worthwhile gains. As for the MRS3 I'm yet to see anyone PROVE the Injen and new to the market ITG induction kits either lose or gain any power over OEM. If I'm incorrect please say otherwise.
I've got the pipercross panel filter in mine with the foam removed and it makes slightly more growl and you get a nice whoosh when you let off
Has anybody tried the mk2 airbox mod on the mk3? They look very similar design so perhaps the same benefits would apply?
Couple of French guys on the French RS forum seen actual gains with the Injen, Mine certainly feels a bit less restricted with it but i don't have any dyno stuff to prove it
I've never really understood the whole concept of 'less restrictive AND filters better' .....surely as one gets better, the other gets worse?
Yeah absolutely true there loads of lab tests on air filters to be found online, all show as flow improves filtration is sacrificed. However I've always been led to believe the dust count in the UK is relatively low due to the cooler and damper conditions.
If the filter is bigger surface than the stock for example cone filters. They could filter same or better with lower restriction. But for same size it is true.
But when do you ever see a paper element cone filter? All other types of filter ( foam, mesh, cotton gauze ) are all inferior to paper filter with regards to filtration ability.
Just in case anyone else is looking for one, I ended up buying a pipercross filter. Fits very well and sounds great.
Will do mate. Its this incase you wanted to know more: I bought the kit off ebay for £20: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMC-Air-F...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3f14addbf9
Well I gave the BMC Filter a clean as per the Youtube vid on Page#2 and the kit worked fine. My only gripe is the simple "rinse with water, then apply the detergent" technique didn't really shift any dirt at all so I ended up going over it again with some kitchen roll. Overall after 1yr of use the filter wasn't clogged/blocked it was just dirty.
How did you get on with the cleaning kit? I'm looking to buy one as the filter I've just bought has been used in the past so want to clean it up before i install it. Cheers
I got a free piper cross panel filter with a service earlier on in the year. There isn't much if at all difference apart from a slightly more noisier induction type of sound when you hit boost and let off for example. Not ott noticeable but its a nice enough touch to hear it and not get annoyed with. Always been sceptical about panel air filters from previous cars as the VXR needed various intake mods, BMW it didn't do much apart from let more dirt in and S3 just caused some flat spots weirdly. Seems fine in the meg so no complaints!
Any idea on how long to let the filter dry for ? You can't really tell as it's got the metal mesh over it !
