Xenons. Which bit does what

Discussion in 'Electrical & Interior - Security, ICE, Wiring Loom' started by matt2190, Apr 4, 2014.

  1. Ok I have a 56 plate 225 with factory fit xenons.

The passenger side had been flickering and now has a tendency to turn off.

Decided to swap the bulbs over to narrow the problem down and after the driver side is now flickering.

Got myself online to look for a bulb but nothing looks like the unit I took out.

So to my question. I swapped the bulbs plus the metal box on the back over but I have a feeling I have swapped the ballast and the bulb over. Anyone confirm this as the metal box looked to be part of the bulb when i had things apart?

    Thanks Matt.

one of mine flickers too, i need to strip them down and see whats what. Hopefully it'll just be a bulb but i fear it may be the ignitor :worried:

  3. Is the ignitor the same as the ballast? I dont mind replacing the parts if needed but struggling to find the parts to even buy and these are new to me dont know anything about them.

no they are separate. but connect to each other. they are EXPENSIVE too... i very much doubt its the ballast mate, i'd go with bulb if you've swapped it over and its now affecting the other side.

  5. But is the metal box the bulb is attached to actually part of the bulb? Really wish i had taken a pic when i had it apart.

no, you have the ballast, which connects to the ignitor, which the bulb sits in... i have a pic on my progress thread, if you click the TDK bit on my details under my name you'll find it near the end of progress.

The cheapest thing and the most usual fault is the bulbs - I'd just buy a new set of bulbs and go from there.

Ballasts are cheap enough, the part number services many different car makes so you can pick up say a used jaguar ballast cheaper then searching for a megane effort.

After doing a LOT of research I ended up getting used units, electrics and a brand new loom for £150

  8. Flickering is usually the ballast, bulbs tend to discolour before failing totally. If yours flickers and works occasionally then I'd suspect the ballast.

Before buying anything, try leaving the bulbs in place and swapping the ballast; then you'll know for certain what's at fault.

HIDs Direct are nice chaps and very helpful, any difficulty sourcing anything, they will have the OE items.

  9. Not correct at all. The height module is in the ballast. And Valeo ballasts (that are on meganes) are same looking. Same SN but diferent coding for height adjustment and the auto leveling just wont work if it is not of an renault. Ballasts fail very rarelly.
The metal box right on top of the bulb is the igniter and is part of the bulb. Ballast is on the underside of the headlight.
Swith the bulb over and if for the bulb the flickering happens on the other side than its a bulb. But if the bulb from the other side is flickering on the previous ballast than it is the ballast. But could be the cable from the ballast to the igniter..

    And the bulb:

The valeo part number for a megane ballast also services other manufacturers.

The ballast has to be the same or they cannot sell it as a universal unit for various models.

  11. Thanks this helps explain which bit is which. I had swappd the bulb plus ignitor over and the flickering swappd sides so bought a bulb from halfrauds will fit it later.

I need to swap lights over to check as one of mine flickers, oddly it flickers and self adjusts, when it stops adjusting to bulb turns off.

  13. My ballest flicked before cutting out. i got one from work in the end they suffer with water damage.
but yes they do fit other makes of vehicle.

so mine sounds like its the ballast thats going? I'll obviously need to swap bulbs first to check..

  15. Glad it helped you
