Since having a full set of Michelin ps3 fitted the rear of my R26 feels quite unsettled, defo not as tied down as it used to feel. Now I know the tyres have to scrub in but they have been on for over 500miles A & B road miles. When I turn in it feels like the car has to settle before I can power through the corner where as before I could turn in and there was no feeling of waiting for the car to settle. Could it be down to tyre pressure? At the moment I have 29 at the rear and 33 at the front. I found that was ideal for the last set of tyres I had (Toyo T1Rs) Do the Michelins benefit from a different pressure? Ive recently checked the rear suspension and that seems all good, its currently on 57,000miles. I cant think of anything else that could affect the rear handling like this. So I'm open to any ideas and comments.
T1r do have quite squishy sidewalls so its conceivable pressure could make a difference. Ive never run them alongside other tyres though so cant say for sure
I would have said pressures as mine was awful before i tweeked them but your running near enough what i am now. 33f 28r and its planted through the bends.
I had a set of PS3s right after a set of PS2s and noticed the car wasnt as sharp through the corners or braking. On the PS3s i ran 30psi rear and 35 psi -front which made the car feel a bit better. Found the grip of tyres increase when warmer i.e. after 10 mins of spirited driving but IMO PS3s never gave me the confidence when it came to performance/ corners.
I had ps2 on my 172 and thought they were great. You can't get ps2 now. They've been replaced by the ps3.
PS3's arnt the replacement for PS2's someone will be along with the exact tyre that replaced the PS2 but i thought it was the SuperSport
Michelin pilot super sports are the replacement for ps2 but cannot get the cup size of 235/40/18 only 225. I have had 2 sets now and find them good in 225/40/18 .
Id certainly try a few different tyre pressures. I found the tale quite loose when running lower pressures at the rear. Try 29 front and rear as a benchmark. I go to 25 front and rear for track and 30 front and back on road. Dave
There are some internet retailers that have PS2s in stock, but as i understand it they have stopped manufacturing them. The Pilot supersport (PSS) is now the one to go for as someone has said.
I've just ordered 4x PS2s from cam skill £131 a corner. I have 2x PS2s and 2x PS3s in my garage and the PS3 sidewalls don't feel as stiff as the PS2s.
If the rear is twitchy...rear dampers. Mine suffered from this, I've just replaced all 4 dampers as part of my F1's 'refresh'; the car drives perfectly again now. None were leaking etc, however they were clearly tired due to the difference in the feel of the car now.
Yeah I thought it might be dampers, but I was hopping it was going to be the cheaper option of changing tyre pressure. Lol.
Is the rear stripped?! Meg's rears are always skippy. I'm running fully geo'd coilovers and can still feel mine wanting to play about.
No it's not stripped. I wouldn't say it's skippy it's more like when you turn in the rear takes a while to follow the front, like the car is taking to bites at the corner or falling in to the corner rather than flowing through it.
Hmmmm not sure what to make of that. It could (I think it is) just how they are at the limit... I'll give it a blast and let you know no problem!
