So while cleaning the car this afternoon it suddenly struck me the wheel arch vents don't actually do anything. As you can see from the pics: There appears to be a groove on the inside of the wheel arch liner but this doesn't appear to do anything? I thought it might be a vent but its completely sealed. A quick google and I found someone on Pistonheads who has done something similar: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=1196000 Has anyone done anything on the Meg yet?
My last car had fake vents too, they're just for show on street cars. I think the idea of real vents is to stop the intense heat, generated by lots of hard braking, from building up in the arches (and typically have venting in from the front as well to create smooth airflow). However I can't see when you would ever need it on the streets
I'm planning on chopping a bit of the liner out and adding cold air feeds to mine for this year, Brakes on the RS250 run very hot so I'm doing anything o can to try and combat it as I killed a set of RS29s in 2 trackdays and about 5k miles. RS29s are meant to be a long lasting endurance pad as well but the heat killed mine very quickly and I would rather I didn't have to replace them with the price they are as often. Quite a few of the more track focused RS250s on the continent run similar setups with good results from those I have seen and spoken to
The 197/200 wing vents are fully functional and vent hot air from the engine bay. If you drive at 30mph and stick your hand out the window down the door you can feel the warm airflow too!
The only benefit i guess it would have it getting some of the heat away from the brakes. I guess it would only have any real benefit on track though
Thanks Jamie it's nice to have a response other than "wtf, why?". Have you seen how the Pistonheads link has achieved it, is that the same kind of approach you are considering? I havent had the wheel arch off to see whats behind it that might be an obsticle, hopefully not much!
