265 Engine rattle with revs

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by Radz08, Jun 20, 2024.

  1. Hi guys,

    2013 RB8 265 100k kms.

I have an engine rattle that you can hear in the video below.

Doesn’t rattle on idle, ac works, car doesn’t have any other issues and drives fine.

has anyone had something like this? I have no idea where to start. Noise doesn’t seem to change with ac on/off.

    I’m stumped.

    any help appreciated.

try it again with the clutch peddle pushed down, to see if that changes anything

    So its an engine issue.
Have you recently had a cambelt change etc

  5. Nope, no belt change or anything. It’s booked in for one but otherwise nothing touched on that side of engine.

i'm just wondering if it's the dephaser pully, but from my experience they rattle at idle, unless this is on it's way out and not fully fudged

  7. I would go ahead with the cam and auxiliary belt change that is due and see if it stops - ie could be due to tensioner or associated bearing, etc.
Also get the mechanic to run the car without the auxiliary belt as he's putting it together - if no rattle, but it returns once the belt is back on then it helps narrow it down i.e. compressor/compressor pulley etc.

If I'm chasing down a noisy bearing, rattle etc I use the poor man's engineering stethoscope - short length of 13 mm black poly retic pipe. Or the real thing if you can afford it!
Flexible poly is a bit more forgiving if it gets caught on a belt. If you're not confident in doing these sort of things DON'T, repeat don't do it - and always remember safety gear (eg glasses, gloves etc)

  8. thanks mate, earliest booking is a month away so hopefully it doesn’t grenade itself

  9. I have a post as well about this, yours sounds exactly like mine. Still have not figured it out.

  10. hey mate, just got the timing belt done yesterday. Renault mechanic stated that it’s the ac compressor.

weird because it still works but that’s what it is. Not super fussed or worried now, too cold to use it for the next few months anyway.

  11. My AC is noisy as hell anyway. Does your sound change or go away if the AC is on or off or anything like that?

My worry is that I do have history of timing belt BUT no mention of dephaser pulley having been done.

  12. used to change noise on or off but now it’s pretty constant. I was worried about that too but confirmed by alpine affaire in Melbourne that it’s ac so don’t stress if it’s the exact noise, highly doubt dephaser.

I have the very same issue. It`s the AC compressor "clutch" , damaged sheer hub.

the setup is very similar to this:

  14. Would it be economical to rebuild?

the part (must be NRF 380097) is not expesive but involves some work for the replacement. I don`t now if lowering the engine on that side will give some better acces to remove it.

    (I didn`t replaced mine yet)

so , is possible to gain accest to the AC by removing front bumper , the front under frame , etc. I just pulled the front rads support ( I don`t know the english term for that). I didn`t disconnect the AC lines nor the coolant ones.

the compressor will hand and there will be enough space to replace the pulley / clutch , etc. I will try to remove the pulley by impact gun (counter clockwise) , if not need some special Denso AC tool to block the mechanism.

mine is broken ( the inside safety mechanism) and makes a sound 100% identical with an boost leak.

strangely enough the AC works perfect even with the damaged pulley that somehow enages the compressor shaft.

unbolting this line will facilitate the AC compressor to hang down
