Why do Renaultsport fit such a high offset wheel?

Discussion in 'Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres section' started by andrewjeffs, Feb 3, 2017.

  1. Recently fitted a new set of alloys to my R26,with a 45 offset..which seems to be about the average offset for a wheel.

Why do Renault fit such a unusual offset of 67 to the R26?
It obviously results in the wheels being a long way inside the archs, making the car look`under wheeled`

Also fitting a car with wheels sat further out will result in a increase in track, which should give better road holding?

I am not aware of another manufacturer that has such a high offset.

Its to do with Scrub radius.

Lower offset wheels arn't always best either, I would always try to keep as close to OEM spec as possible to keep the Scrub radius similar or the same, hence its taken so long for me to get aftermarket wheels LOL

  3. I've been looking for weeks now trying to decide what wheels/offset/width to get.. Think I've settled on 8.5j and ET45 pro race 1.3 unless I find the correct offset for a 9j on a 250 (if anyone knows? would be great) and have them made up for me which I may just annoy everyone with even more wheel posts/questions on facebook lol as I'm gonna have to wait for my 8.5j ET45 to be made anyway so might be better having the 9j made up, Just don't wanna restrict my tyre choice in future I'm gonna be track only so would like to run slicks but will probably mainly be DZ03G/A048/888R/AR-1 (weather and track dependant as I wanna do some more track days at the Ring this year)

If your going 9's you want ET50-55 for the perfect MK3 fitment

  5. So if I decided to go 9j wide then I need ET50-55 and that won't rub anywhere or would that depend on tyre choice? I'll probably be running A048/888R/DZ03G/AR-1 but in the future wanna try Slicks, would the 9j ET55 (also would ET55 be better than 50 and if I need to run say 5mm spacers rather than the lower offset) be a better option than going 8.5j and ET45.

Cheers Jamie appreciate the info. (am I right in assuming your the same guy who's been helping me on the Facebook page)

Should be ok, my OZs are ET55 IIRC and I'm going to run a 255/35 up front.
Personally I'd go as wide as I could to start with, I'm not a fan of spacers but if needed I probably would.

The Raeder spec ATS rims are 9s and ET42 but I think they are a bit much, granted they look mega on them

    Yeah thata me haha

  7. Ok cheers mate cheers again lol I'm just so weary of ordering the wrong wheels and having a grand of scrap I can't use lol I share the car with my dad and I would never hear the last of it... so

    18x9 et55 5x114.3 and center bore 66.1

would be a better wheel for track use and tyres options than the 18x8.5 et45...

    assuming 9j takes 235 upto a 265 width tyre.

    235/40/18
    245/40/18
    255/35
265/35 - doesn't seem to be much choice in this size though.

  8. I'm trying to get a second set of wheels for the track (current rims are Advan RS II 18" on 235/40 18) and saw a set of used Rota Grid R (18x9.5 ET38). Would these fit? What's the best combination (rim size/tire size) to not alter the balance of the car too much? I want to stay with 18" as the tires will be more affordable than 19"

  9. .

  10. The knuckle design drives the offset somewhat. The Renault PerfoHub is a wider set up than the standard McPherson Strut of the base car and they can't extend the front track to infinity. Wheel offset also impacts wheel bearing durability. There are also homologation requirements for wheel to fender clearances for snow chains and snow pack. Essentially it's driven by packaging and the need to balance many design criteria.

No chance. Unless you want to cut your arches and run plenty camber.

  12. Thanks Jamie, so what's a regular size people use on their Mk3?

Depends what suspension, width and tyres your on really, there's too many variables

  14. a great answer the covers all the bases..

  15. Well, I'm on 235/40 18. The car is lowered with the Eibach Pro Kit springs ( on Advance RS II rims - no idea what width and offset). Other than that stock. Will use the same size tyres for the track. So question is really width of rims and offset, I guess.

  16. While we're on the topic... I was looking at some TSW Interlargos in 18x9 +63 and to run 265/35/18 AD08R's as they 1) meet load rating which is great for insurance and 2) have only a rolling difference of 0.6% over stock 19's so won't mess with speedo or differential gearing.

Would they fit in the guards on a stock 275RS?

Assume yes as at the offset only goes in 12mm to hub and out 19mm to arch?

  17. Hi - Asking here as well. I'm going to be running KW Clubsport in the near future with 45mm drop. Will be running 17" 9" wide with 45 offset. Has anyone run similar and encountered any issues with rubbing ?

  18. No problem, a lot of track cars have that setup.
