So I've got 245/40r18 all round. Car feels fantastic, although this is the only cup I've driven, so no idea what it feels like on narrower tyres. I'm using eagle f1s. What are you using and any reason why?
Again 245/40/18 but I have Michelin PS4, always liked Michelin tyres on the car and the bike but tempted to try the Goodyear F1 Supersports next time if the price is right Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I have 225/40 R18 Goodyear Eagle F1 Super Sport. I don’t have a bigger tire, because I’m in Germany, and I can only use what is "recorded on the car papers".
From factory non-cup cars came with 225's, cup cars with 235's. Currently have Goodyear Supersports in 235 size on mine and they're brilliant. Bridgestone have also just released their new Potenza Sport which are apparently really good, so I will likely try them when the Goodyear's wear down. On a personal note I think 225's are the best option if you daily drive your Meg and never go on track, since they are a fair amount cheaper than a 235 and should handle standing water a little better. For a mixture of uses though 225, 235 and 245 square setups all work fine, but 245's are strangely the same price as 235's so maybe that's the best option? I've also seen some full-on track Meg's run 235 rear and 255 front, or even 245 rear 265 front which looks a lot of fun!
I think that the measure 225 is original for both Cup/non Cup at least in Europe... I've seen Cups with 225 and not Cups with 225 too!
I´d fit 225 Pilot SuperSport and very happy. Don´t notice difference to be honest. Maybe on track somebody would notice someting, as @Vulcan3 says, but not my case.
On the track, with a bigger tire, you will have more contact with the ground, and therefore more amount of grip. but it also doesn't mean that with a bigger tire, you can do better times...
+1 for the above. Tyre size, pressure and compound will all make a difference in the performance. I originally asked the question because the Megane I have has 245 tyres all round.
I'm not saying that with a 245 tire you don't make good times!! More ground contact and more grip is always good, but the bigger the tyre, the more rolling resistance it has, and that's not good either. And also the bigger, the heavier it becomes. The development of a car also involves the right size of tires that it will use.Often the type of tire and the correct pressure are more important than the tire size!
yes indeed. I'll possibly change for manufacturer spec tyres once these are done. they are brand new by the previous owner
255 on mine and it likes to follow the road more than when I had 235 on it, but no where near enough that I would even consider changing them
How much camber must you have on the rear to fit 255"? I want to try how the car feels with 255" on the rear but also want a fairly neutral camber at the rear.
i have an R26 now, so no adjustment on the rear, there on 8.5j ET50 wheels. Don't have any rubbing issues even on track. My 265 had 1.2degrees on the rear (i think) i didn't set it up CGR did was running the same dimension wheels on that.
Yes i have sold the 265 and yes i feel the R26 is a better car for track days and as that is what it's for, i will put up with the extra cabin noise for that reason. Don't get me wrong the 265 was a nice car, driving to and from tracks was a joy, comfortable and quite, but, there's always a but, it didn't give me total confidence when pushing really hard. Anyway, how are you doing young man ???
those F1 supersports are dam fine tyre and really bring the competition to Michelin in both dry and wet abilities BUT....they wear out quite bit faster than PS4S
Fine. back end of June Anglesea, and Brands a week later, Spa July, Oulton/Anglesea, plus anything in-between, so looking forward to them. Stay safe.
I have 235 40 18 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2s on my R26. I use it daily and found tyres great in the wet.
I have some a052’s ready to go on in size 235/40/18 with standard wheels and 20mm spacers all round. Currently running 225/40/18 ado8 Rs. Not bad but seem to over heat too quick. Car is mainly track toy. I would love to try without spacers and correct ET maybe 9inch alloys with 265’s. I would even cut my wings and add on flares if it helps me go much faster lol I was considering adding some vents to inside front of arch liner like many cars already have to help cool the tyre. Anyone have views on this?
235 40 18 is standard size on a r26, so no spacers are needed, i don't run spacers (ever) et50 is fine, if you have 20mm spacers on standard wheels you are already running et48 ish. AD08r's aren't good on track, as you say overheat too quick, think it's the same with AR1's, although i have never tried them, a friend had new ones at Anglesey and killed them in a day. Tuition is the cheapest go faster option
With the Megane's being front wheel drive, would it make sense to have a wider tyre at the front to help with grip? FWD not great for acceleration as too much wheel spin.
I’ve noticed a bit more grip with 255/40/17 up front with PS4 on compared to previous 235/40/18 with eagle F1. Unsure if that’s down to tyre or general width of them. Only thing to note is more tram lining with wider tyres
Our cars are second, probably third gear cars. Whilst first will grip, the cars aren't designed for drag racing. They will however keep honest lots of interesting cars when in motion. Try a set and see what happens. I'd still want as wide tyres on the rear as front. Lift off oversteer can be deadly.
What sort of power are you putting through your wheels? If cars remain stock there wouldn't be such an issue with grip. Who turns their traction control off? I leave mine on 95% of the time.
When on track you'll want to turn the traction control off because when left on it grabs the brakes to keep the car in check, which very often results in the rear pads getting totally chewed up.
300+. and I do, my remap is only active with the TC off. I don't have an issue mind you, I only have a problem I generate on roundabouts where I use too much throttle in second and overload the diff. Otherwise, I have no traction issues.
