Spark plugs+ oil additives(maintenance)

  1. Hi!
How often do you change the spark plugs?
I'm going to change the oil and filter soon, and I was wondering if it's worth changing the spark plugs too!
I changed the spark plugs the last time I changed the oil, and I usually change the oil every 10k km.
Does anyone use any oil additives when changing the oil? Like Liqui Moly Ceratec.
I saw a video of a guy in Germany doing car preparation(Amg,Lambos,Porsche) and he said he uses it on all cars, something like ceramic additives.
My car doesn’t make track days, just some B roads and some Autobahn.

If there Iridium plugs and you don't do trackdays, then i would say 25-30k miles, my Mercedes says 50k miles change intervals.

I use Extralube ZX1 in the engine and gearbox, used to use it in my racing lawnmower ( i know, i know) never lost an engine with that stuff in it.

I had a big end bearing pick up down the back straight of Thruxton, i heard it make a noise, hit the clutch, coasted into the pits, let it cool down and then drove part the way home :laughing:

  3. +1 on ZX1. Since Ian recommended it a couple of months ago, I’ve added it to gearbox and engine oil. The engine is less lumpy at start up and I think it is now keener through the revs. I had a new exchange gearbox fitted, so it was always going to feel better than the old one, but it changes gear smoothly with the ZX1 added. Thanks Ian!

  4. Ktec recommend spark plugs every 37.5k miles.

I'm very pessimistic with things like these oil additives. Personally I think it's snake oil and whenever you use these sorts of products you will naturally convince yourself you can feel improvements when the reality is nothing has changed. That's just my opinion though and maybe someone on here has anecdotal proof of these products being beneficial.

Yours is a road car so absolutely no need for any added cost or complexity. Stick some Renault spec 5w40 in it plus a new filter and crack on. You changed the plugs at the last service so no need for new ones yet.

ZX1 Extralube is a chlorinated paraffin, you really do not want to put that in an engine or gearbox!

    Cheers,

  6. The only problem I can see with leaving spark plugs in for the extended intervals modern cars have is it increases the likelihood they will get seized in the head.

I don't know the F4R well enough to know if that's a particular issue it has, but it's certainly a problem with the industrial VW engines I work on. I tend to just back the plugs out and put them back in even on interim services.
