Gearbox seal leaking

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by Dave wood, Feb 8, 2021.

  1. Hi
I have dropped the gearbox yesterday and noticed that a seal is weeping from the reverse linkage shaft it looks like some sort of metal seal. To cure this is there an easy fix or is it a gearbox strip down. Thanks for reading

The seal is in a metal casing, so trying to get it out with the box in place is going to be so difficult.

The 250/265/275 gearbox is an easy strip, hardest part is getting it out as its ***kin heavy, but then if you are stripping it you have really got to do the bearings as they weren't the best quality when built, quite a few have developed gearbox noise due to the bad bearings, then also do the seals.

My 3rd gear started getting notchy to the point i couldn't use 3rd at all (103k miles), then 4th started to go, so thats when the box was swapped out.

One of my bearings was really well worn, but didn't make any noise.

  3. Had same issue, leaking seal
Unless diy as Ian has by time worked out cost removing, inspecting, replacing parts was same as a re-furnished box around £750

i had a bit of luck i think, i bought a box that was stripped and guaranteed for three months for £400, got my friend to swap them over for not a lot of money and really surprised the gearbox has lasted so well.

The bearings and seals i got with my business discount (to refurbish the gearbox that came out) and they still cost £250 but they were the best there is.
On top of that was the was the 3rd and 4th gear set and the bulk ring cluster another £300 ish.

There are some off beat tools that are required to pull the bearing casings out.
