R26 to recirculate or not to recirculate, that is the question

  1. Afternoon fellas,

    So delving into the R26’s engine bay I’ve discovered a recirculating blanking plate has been installed by a previous owner. However, no dump valve is fitted.

    So I’m getting rather a lot of turbo flutter, and although I do enjoy the noise - I know this is not great for the turbo, as the cool (and strangely addictive) flutter is the air stalling the turbo veins.

    What’s everyone running? Uprated recirculating valves or standard dump to atmosphere?

  2. Properfekt reciculating valfe for me. Cheaper than a forge one but stll well made.

  3. standard recirc..been fine for well over 10 years on a stage 1 tune.Fit a ktec induction system,and it will give you a decent noise without to much intrusion,that actually sounds like a dump valve when you come off the power.It also helps the engine breath better at higher revs..

[mention]andrewjeffs [/mention] wanna get it sorted ASAP. Don’t fancy my turbo going pop just yet.

    I’ve always preferred the recirculating idea more, must keep throttle response a bit cleaner?

  5. Hi Bob, was that you I saw tonight at Larkfield? Stealthy black car came up behind me so I waved. Not sure if I am the same chappers. I do ride mtb but normally Pilgrims way, Trosley, Holly hill etc.

  6. My turbo failed last week at a track day. For the first time I placed the microphone in the engine bay and was surprised to hear all the noise you can hear in the video because you don't hear it in the cabin. I use a Forge recirc valve but clearly it's not doing anything going by the amount of compressor surge you can hear!

    Many people believe/say that off throttle compressor surge cause little to no damage, it's on throttle surge that creates damage. I'm not an expert but if my turbo didn't fail due to compressor surge it must have then failed due to other wear and tear characteristics.

  7. What mileage has you car got on it, i took the turbo off of my 265 and it's in perfect condition that with 114k miles on it

  11. It has around 13,000kms with approximately 90% track kilometres. This turbo that failed was in for about 7,500 of those k's.

    It was already running an Engine Dynamics Level II hybrid. Perhaps modifying beyond its OEM parameters helped kill it.

    An initial quick observation indicates damage contained within the turbo which is positive. However, a more thorough inspection required to confirm that. Seems to be a bearing fail but all the blades are intact. No, not cheap but it is an opportunity to upgrade.

  13. Elf. And it gets changed after every second track day including filter. Also, I never do a hot shutdown.
     
  14. I had a Hybrid on my 250 engine'd 225, that went wrong, had it rebuilt and it went bang in a big way with maybe around 1500 miles that was 1 1/2 trackdays.
    That's the reason i went for a standard non molested turbo.
     
  15. I've bought an RS250 with a hybrid turbo making 350 brake that i was gonna track quite regularly. I guess the consensus is swap it back to a standard turbo to stay on the safer side? It was my intention to reduce it to alleviate strain on the drivetrain, but was second guessing it that it was a waste of a good hybrid turbo. Now i guess i'm back to the original thinking of take it down to 300bhp on a standard turbo. You guys in agreement?

  16. I don't know if i was just unlucky but i do know of some others that have had problems with hybrids, a standard turbo on a good engine should push 320 ish.

    My last one went with quite dramatic effect, the guy that built it says it had been over rev'd, there were no air leaks when i stripped it down.

    To me it looked like the exhaust turbine broke, that stopped the shaft, the cold air side carried on and undid the nut and the turbine fell off, at the same time the other end broke off and the shaft fell out, this left the ends open to pump a shit load of oil into the glowing exhaust pipe
     
  17. I don't think mine failed in such a catastrophic way but it does sound like a common weak point.

    Are all hybrids the same? TTE seem to pride themselves with durability over outright HP and turbos is what they do.
