  2. I did another track day yesterday but unfortunately I had to get home like this...

  3. What was the issue?

  4. I had a great start to the day with news that my entry was accepted into Challenge Bathurst. A public road which closes just a few times a year for special events on our best known track. So, track day practice required.

This time around I placed the microphone in the engine bay rather than in the rear hatch space. Some interesting noises going on there which you rarely hear sitting in the cabin. I know it sounds loud but it is a sensitive microphone. Anyway, you'll hear the "dose" (compressor surge). After four years of high RPM gear changes I wonder if it took its toll?

So, when I lost power there was a few noises and an almighty racket. I already had a Stage 2 Engine Dynamics turbo. I'd love it just to be an oil seal or cracked pipe. My concern is if it exploded, has it gone into the engine, I/C and or cat converter. If you don't want to watch the whole session, just fast forward to about 6:40 to see and hear what happens.

Hopefully the inspection will diagnose the fault. Moreover, we need to see the total damage before deciding anything. For fun though, I've been doing some initial research on what's available these days in terms of turbos:

  5. Sorry to hear, hopefully you get it sorted before bathurst.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

  6. Fingers crossed a cheap fix. But the pessimistic demon in me says, probably not.

  7. Shit! Sorry to read this news man. Well, like a friend says, not a break, is an opportunity to make it faster:wink:
    Cheer up mate!

  8. It will be ready for Bathurst, don't doubt that.

I've put down you and Dave to share a garage. Looking forward to it!

  9. An initial quick observation indicates damage contained within the turbo which is positive. However, a more thorough inspection required to confirm that.

I'm thinking a Borg Warner EFR6758 as a suitable replacement.

    Hi Dooook
That's what mine is running, very pleased with it, was a bit of a faff to get it fitted but worth it.

  11. Hi Ian,
I'll need to revisit your build thread for the details. I was hoping to use the K-Tec V-band adapter off the manifold and have a custom V-band dump pipe fabricated. Are there other aspects that make it a faff to get fitted?

So it sounds like you are not going for the twin scroll one then, i'm very happy with mine, boost starts at around 2k and is on full boost at 3.5k and just pulls and pulls.
Once i made the adaptor it wasn't too bad a fit, the only V band i used was on the decat pipe, that had to be lengthened by 30mm, the turbo has a bigger exhaust outlet and is higher anyway and then there's the adaptor i fitted as well.

The actuator that came with my turbo wasn't worth using, it's only set at 11psi, i retrofitted a Turbosmart one that was set at 26psi.

There is also no room to fit the actuator in its supplied position, that also had to be moved and altered.

  13. Given all of that, I think I'll go with the TTE option. Going down the EFR path, or similar, is best with a forged build. A quick estimate shows that for me doing an EFR would be an AUD$10,000 exercise whereas just getting a new hybrid would be a AUD$2,000 exercise.

Ouch, how is it going to cost that much, even $2000 for a hybrid is silly money

  16. :fearscream::fearscream::fearscream: That was a turbine?? Missing bit still in the track possibly!

Yes what was left of it
    More than likely :openmouth::openmouth:

  18. I stand corrected.The TTE340 is 1,633 Euro. In aussie dollars that's around $2,500

To make an EFR fit, the things that I would need to get include; new pre-turbo intake, new custom dump pipe, either K-Tec adapter or entire exhaust manifold, new wastegate actuator that would need custom fitting and tuning, custom re-tune and obviously the turbo itself which is around $3,500 alone, then the labour for all that work.

So far all I need is a new turbo and most likely a new dump pipe with cat.

A bit of welding & that will be good to go.

  21. OUCH, Expensive breakdown, I hope you had insurance to tow the vehicle outside the track.

  22. So it's a new turbo, a new exhaust down pipe and a tune. It could have been a lot more expensive so I'm grateful that it's just that. It seems that the spring I had in the recirc valve was too stiff and acting as a blanking plate rather than a valve. New spring set from Forge is about to be delivered. The TTE turbo was ordered on 1 August so I'm expecting a despatch notification any day now.

My insurance doesn't cover any towing. To add that to my cover is nearly the same as what the cost of the tow was. The track is just 15 miles from my house so not an expensive distance. In 8 years of Renault Sport ownership, this is the first time I've needed a tow due to a breakdown. I am well pleased with the reliability of this product but then again, I do get it serviced, modified and repaired properly.

  27. Hi Dook, question - have you done sway bars? If so which ones?

    Cheers

  28. I’ve installed a rear sway bar which I now have in the stiffest setting in an attempt to dial out corner exit understeer but also avoid snap oversteer. It didn’t make it worse but I’m not sure it made much difference.

Mechanical LSD did more for the corner exit understeer.

  29. Thanks.

I imagine you had the coilovers already. Well I was thinking to add to the OEM suspension, maybe provide a bigger gain.

TTE stuff is great, Did it come with thr heat sheiding or did you add that on?

    That stuff is super effective

  32. Yup! Most (but not all) of their turbos can be ordered with the heat shielding. So it came as you see in the pics.

  34. Just checked this out, great stuff, great car. Good to see some on track footage from track see watching Aussie V8 Super cars. Bathurst got to be on of best tracks in the world, would love to go there one day.

  35. be interesting see how long stay with rear ARB as i feel they work well with factory springs but not a firmer aftermarket set up

  36. So the car was finally put back together and went for a re-tune, then a final check for the first shakedown before Challenge Bathurst. This is at SMSP which now run twilight sessions as they've installed very good lighting around the entire track.

  37. Jammy Bastard, nice to be able to do a trackday. I was supposed to be on Silverstone GP on Monday but was cancelled due to this 2nd lockdown we are in, and the wether was good.

  38. And on an entirely different type of track...

  39. It was an option upon turbo purchase. I don’t believe you can purchase it separately.
