R26 ball joint replacement - rough cost?

Discussion in 'Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres section' started by William Barnett, Nov 16, 2019.

  1. Hi guys,

I've seen an R26 F1 for sale near me but looking through the MOT history this was the most recent advisory:

Nearside Front Lower Suspension component ball joint has slight play (5.3.4 (a) (i))
Offside Front Lower Suspension component ball joint has slight play (5.3.4 (a) (i))

Now I understand that the ball joints can be an issue on these cars so my question is - roughly how much would these cost to replace?

Also the window actuator has gone on one side but the owner tells me the window still works - again, any idea how much to replace this part?

Just trying to work out if its worth viewing and if so how much it could cost me to get these issues sorted.

    Many thanks!

There not ball joints on the lower suspension, there needle bearings in a cage, if you get the parts from the right place and you can do the job yourself then its a £50 job, if you are going too pay Renault its going to be £600 +.

The window issue could be the control module £25 ish off of Ebay

  3. Thanks mate, I wouldn't want to go the Renault route but also it wouldn't be something I would do myself. I do have a good independent garage who could do the job for me if I sourced the parts.

So if the car was the right price those issues wouldn't put you off?

  4. Theres ball joints on the end of the lower arms mate. Im in the process of changing mine now. Got them off Eurocarparts for about £13 for both sides.

  5. Nice one, thank you. Any idea how long it would take? Just figuring out rough labour costs to get my garage to do it.

Car's reg is YD57AHY - would you guys mind taking a quick look at the MOT history to see if there is anything else I should be mindful of: https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/

Chap says hes had the cam belt, water pump, drop links, anti roll bar links, rear calipers, handbrake, front driveshafts, gear box oil all done and the car has new front discs and brake pads as well.

  6. Looking at the MOT history noting there is a few issues up front with suspension components, but then you say all the above work has recently been done (receipts to prove?) then id say your ok, just maybe deal with issues as and when they arrive.

With regards the ball joint, there are in a fairly easy place to fit/remove so wouldnt have thought the labour would be too much. Ive removed my whole lower front subframe as im doing lots of other work. Im not sure if they have to be hydraulically pressed out and pressed in as i havent got to doing them yet. Im sure someone else on here can advise on that.

  7. Thanks mate, going to take a look this week so I'll check receipts and have a poke about and take it from there.
