Gearbox Bearing Repair (3rd and 4th gear)

Discussion in 'New to the Club? Why not introduce yourself?' started by Joey B, Sep 4, 2019.

  1. Hi guys,

Bought a megane 250 cup recently. Really like it but 3rd and 4th gear have started to whine quite badly due to worn/pitted bearings. I live in Bournemouth so went over to KTEC and they quoted me well over 1000 pounds - was hoping to spend less.

Any recommendations for other garages in Dorset that specialise in RS renaults or performance cars in general?

    Thanks, Joey

Mine was making a noise after my first ring trip this year, went again to the ring and got a little louder, did Snetterton and it got really bad, managed to get it home, tried my best not to use 3rd as that was the worst.

Bought a Gearbox from Renparts on Ebay, 3 month warranty and it's great and they didn't want my old gearbox, so im going to rebuild that and have as a spare

  3. Hi again,

Thinking of getting one from Renparts as well. Did you go for a used one or reconditioned one? And did they fit it?

  5. Ok great! Gonna phone them on Monday and get a few more details regarding the reconditioned box. Out of interest, how much did your garage charge you for fitting the gearbox? I've been quoted over 9 hours labour by every garage i've visited - pulling that installation time from some common database. Seems a little excessive. Could be wrong!

I get on really well with the owner of the garage, he didn't charge me what he should of, but they did it in a day easily, charged me £200

  7. Bought a reconditioned gearbox off ebay (renspec). Fitted by a garage near my work. Gearbox itself feels much tighter if a tad notchy but it's getting better with every mile. However it is impossible to locate first gear unless you pull up the gaiter. Would this suggest the gearlinkage needs adjusting?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated

That sounds like they have fitted the cable wrong, i didn't think there is an adjustment on the cable itself, so it just clips on and its in the right position.

  9. Gearbox is now sorted! The gear linkages needed a little fettling. Now feels much better than before and no gearstick movement when accelerating in 3rd.

The last thing i want to do is to make sure they sent me one with a LSD. I had a LSD before and the car feels very similar after the change - live in an urban area but tested it on a few roundabouts.

Seen that if you jack up the front and rotate one of the front wheels the other should rotate in the same direction if it's a LSD. Is that true of all LSDs?

Yes that's right, both turn the same direction
