Clutch kit options

  1. Ok, just back from Celtic tuning who re mapped my 2006 ph2 225. Strange results as the pre re-map and graph showed 252bhp and 249lbs/ft. I have no knowledge of the car ever being modded other than the k-tec induction kit. Anyhow, after uploading the 3 software packages, the tech team were confused. Remap shows only 258 BHP( turbo boost drop off due to only standard turbo), but 315 lbs/ft torque! The car is very lively through the gears BUT, in 4th 5th and 6th, the clutch is slipping badly midrange. It's a shame as the midrange torque is inspiring. I guess the plate is probably unable to take the torque as the car has a serviced 95k, but no evidence of a clutch change. The question is, what kit will I need to eradicate the clutch slip at midrange in the high gears? Some say r26r, some say single mass, others dci 175 and I'm sure there are many other derivatives. I only use the car as my daily driver and have no intention of tracking it. Labour is organised, just need to buy the right kit that can handle the torque figure.
Many thanks for any constructive suggestions on this.

  2. Hello mate,
Me again! I'd opt for the R26r clutch and SMF. This is what I opted for on advice from Paul at RS Tuning who indeed fitted it all. The clutch can supposedly handle 360lb/ft, but people are running more with no apparent issues, and of course the SMF will not need changing with any subsequent new clutches, the other bonus is that the engine revs quicker with this rather than the DMF. In my opinion this package is worth every penny, and unless you're looking at going crazy with the power, it can handle just about anything!
My initial remap figures were similar... 258bhp and 310lb/ft, ideally to get more you'll need a bigger intercooler, a bigger exhaust would certainly help, the standard injectors are running at max cycle at around 270-280 BHP, (I ran 271bhp with standard injectors with no problems), so 630cc injectors would certainly help, but of course this involves another mapping session.

  3. Hi Si, hows tricks? So, smf it is. However, I am told if you ask for an r26r one, its considerably more expensive than the dci kit, which, again, so I hear, is exactly the same as the r26r kit!!!
K-tec do one as do engine dynamics. I'm staying with this map for now and just addressing the clutch issue, as it pulls like mad through the gears up to 4th, when at mid range, it starts slipping. On the turbo stall issue, I've been advised to fit a stronger wastegate spring. Maybe that will/wont solve the problem. In any event, as a daily driver, 320 lbs/ft is enough for me!!

  4. running over 300lb/ft is a risk on mk2 engines.
Hopefully it will hold, but its luck of the draw with them.

SMF will throw a light as well,so it will have to be mapped out.

  5. Hi. Yes, i have sent Celtic an email how they re mapped the torque to 320 when their standard 'safe' re-map for the 225 is set at 278bhp and torque at 279 lbs/ft. The engine was pre graphed before the new uploads and was and they showed 250 and 252 respectively. All i have added is a k-tec induction kit, so i have to assume the previous owner had played with it before. Regardless, im taking it easy on the revs for now, until i decide what to do. Might have to wind down the torque to nearer 285 but reluctant to do so as 320 is totally insane. Its like driving a rabid ferral cat lol!!

  6. Me again mate! Unfortunately, I have to agree with 300lbft being the absolute, not altogether totally safe limit for our engines. The weak point is the rods, after all the money/parts I've thrown at/on mine, even though it made substantially more on the dyno initially, my figures were then capped at 302bhp and 303lbft, hopefully to protect the engine. I don't kick the arse out of it regularly, but every now and then it gets it! So far so good!

  7. mines been running 270hp/290lb/ft for many years on RS Tuning map.
my mates been running similar on a weaker clio 182 turbo conversion for quite a few years.
but then you see other blow up running similar power.
i think a lot of this is down to poor mapping, and simply bad luck.

People have tried to say,its when the torque all arrives that makes the rods or bolts go.
But i have known several let go at just cruising speeds.

    pay your money,take your chance.

  8. Wise words! Celtic spent over 3 hours with my car on the rollers and I felt, gave a very thorough de brief after the remap was done. They have even offered to come to me free of charge to re map the torque figure. Very professional outfit in my opinion, but engines are engines, and as you say, over 300 is putting it in the danger zone. The trouble is, in my quest to find a car that puts shivers down my spine when giving it full beans, I'm reluctant to give it back!! Perhaps the option is to forge the piston and con rods?? Not cheap, but a lot cheaper than a 're build........

  9. probably best to just drive it,and hope for the best.
A tuned engine, and even any engine ,at the age of 225`s now could go at any minute..who knows.

You can always forge it when it eventually(if ever),gives up.
Got to ask yourself though,is it worth spending all that money on forging, when the car is 12 years + old?
These cars are getting old now,and a lot of them will become money pits with suspension,steering,clutch/flywheel,bushes.All coming to the end of there life.

I have in the last 12 months spent over 3k on my R26 ,on all of the above.

  10. having spent all that time tuning the car is a very good sign, that these boys care about your car.
so many people take huge risks, just uploading a remote map,
with no idea how its set up,or if the car is in fit enough shape to take that state of tune.

Why would you take such a risk on a 5-6k engine?..its bizarre.

When i went to RS Tuning all those years ago.Even though my car was new,it had a weak injector.
That would have been missed with a remote map, with potential catastrophic results.

People actually get all arsy ,when people talk about RS Tunings reputation.
But Pauls been tuning Renaultsport from the very start.
Just makes sense to go to people with good reputations, instead of taking risks.

  12. I'm not going to risk it, even though it's amazingly fast. Getting Celtic to de tune the torque down to 285lbs/ft before I see con rods in my rear view mirror!!!

  13. At the end of the day, what price for a big grin on your face in a car that has just blown away a "fast car"? Mine only stands me in at £1900 purchase price, £450 on suspension parts and bushes, £300 tyres, £300 remap, £90 k-tec induction kit and £80 hub assembly. So, at a total of £3100 approx and it's in great condition and in a beautiful colour. SO, in summary, if it all went bang tomorrow it's cost me nothing relatively. But I do love it. 0-60 in under 6 secs.....what else does that for £3k? Clutch will be done once the torque has been reduced. But that's the price of fast car ownership. I love it!

  14. even that is all but double to what those rods were designed for...but every little helps!

  15. Well let's hope so. My friend suggested going to see Mark Black to sort out a clutch. I said, you have more chance of bumping into Jesus in your local Tesco!!

  16. hes a popular man..knows his stuff though
