Oil Filter what tool?

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by Stock265cup, Dec 27, 2018.

  1. Changed the engine oil and gearbox oil on my 265 cup this morning, piece of cake. Only problem was I couldn’t get the bleeding oil filter off. I was using an old crappy chain with a hex piece of metal attached to try and get the filter off but wasn’t enough space to get both hands in to use it properly with a spanner or ratchet. So, what type of tool/method do people use to remove the air filter. Any info would be greatly received, cheers.

  2. Can you not smack a screwdriver in it to get a bit of extra leverage to loosen it. I've only ever used similar.

  3. Was thinking of that but couldn’t risk destroying the filter and still not be able to get it off because I need to be able to use the car.

  4. They might do it. I tried some pipe grips but the handle wasnt long enough to get any leverage on it.

  5. They are the pliers I use, but I still had to resort to jamming a screwdriver through it for the oil filter that the garage fitted. Worked OK for the filters I fitted.
My wife's Honda Jazz is much better as you can get a large socket type thing that fits the shape of the bottom of the filter and you can then just use a socket wrench to undo it...so much easier.

  6. Yep..the R26 filter is stupidly placed,so you cant get good purchase on it.
If you ram a screwedriver in,it also drips oil over the chassis.

My wifes swift sport is a 5 min job, with loads of room to get a chain wrench round it.
got to love renaults attention ,to ease of maintenance!

can't really do that anymore as the filters are so thin now, they will just tear.

  8. Cheers for the info.

  9. I used the Halfords Pliers y.day, took some doing and abit squishing of the filter but managed, yet its piss easy with same pliers on a Clio 172 due to access from the top.

I know Mick & Diamond motors uses one that has like 3 fingers onit and just use a small breaker bar onit

  10. watched a video the other day on the massive gulf of quality between oil filters.
dont ever use FRAM filters..Had rust on the inside, and half the filter media of all the other brands.

  11. Cheers for the help/info guys, changed the oil filter on my car today using the oil filter pliers/grips from Halfords, £11.99 bang on.

  12. I use one of these..... laser 5959.

I’ve used it for years with a decent amount of success. I’ve struggled with it a couple of times though when there’s limited space so it’s not perfect.

Works fine on my R26 though.

I do think there’s a knack to removing canister type oil filters too.
