Floaty steering

  1. Hi all,

Either it's my imagination or my steering seems to have gotten a little loose/floaty just around 'dead straight'. It just feelsas though it's lost some weight/feel for the first few degrees of turning.. Which gives a sense of bring a little light/numb . Hardly confidence inspiring. Anyone else describe their steering like this? It's on old ps4s and recently had two new front shocks .. Nothing obvious worn and no noises... Cheers in advance Simon

  2. It's a 265 cup with 40k miles

  3. Vehicle mileage?

  4. 40k..

  5. Mine had wishbones and lower swivels joints done at 40k so check those.

  6. that vague squirrley sort of feeling sounds like it could be lower swivel bearings. had mine replaced about 29K . mechanic said some are going with as little as 14k on the clock. just gives you the sensation of not quite feeling planted.

  7. thats exact sensation I get when there's slight tension on ARB, given you've had work done on shocks might be worth looking at this. The sensation goes away as you turn into corner and the bar tensions up as it should

  8. Hi guys, reviving this thread. I've got a 265 CUP 89k miles, and can relate to Supersibot's post. First few degrees of steering input, feels light and minimal response from the chassis. After say 10 degrees of steering input, steering feels brilliant, weighted and as I expect.
Suspension overhaul was done 2 years ago, approx. 11k miles. Ball joints, track rod ends, wishbones, drop links etc., I assume with standard bushes. Just had brand new PS5s fitted to front. Lowered. No spacers on he front, 20mm on the rear.

    - I'm thinking Polybush the wishbones?
    - New alignment done? Not sure when last alignment was done.
    - Somebody suggested dampers? Again, unsure when these were last changed to be fair.

Any help is much appreciated. Always enjoy a technical discussion with petrolheads. Cheers

  9. I'm in the same boat lol ! Cars had new top mounts, both anti rotation links, both front wishbones, nearside hub bearing (both were replaced 5 years ago so the second nearside) zero knocks or rattles, but follows every rut in the road. PS4's all round (fronts are getting a bit low). However, if for instance, I go from a middle lane to the inside lane of a motorway, you can feel both the front and back end of the car find the rut in the road as you move across to the lane! Literally had an MOT about a month ago with no advisories at all! Alignment done and bang on from the results.

  10. So strange mate. On my list is Wishbone bushes and lower hub bearings and alignment which you've covered.. How would you describe your steering response when you first begin turning the wheel from top dead centre?

    Cheers

  11. I’d say stationary, little to no resistance at top dead centre either way similar to yours but moving slowly if you wiggle the wheel left to right you can feel the nose of the car wiggle with it. I’ve never really got on with the PS4 tyres to be honest! As I say about a year ago the wishbones etc were done but before that I’ve had shocks done, drop links, rod ends (admittedly four or so years ago) my problem is I can’t be arsed with yet another two hour drive to KTEC

  12. Another thing to mention, appears worse in the damp/wet

  13. Mmmm.. I still can't decipher whether it's a characteristic of the steering, or some bushes / bearings are a bit tired. I'm going to be getting along to some renaultsport meets soon, and hopefully can have someone drive my car to confirm/I drive a very well sorted one.
