250 Dephaser pulley

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by jimmy, Oct 6, 2018.

  1. For anyone thinking of having the cam belt replaced on a mk3, I would definitely recommend the dephaser pulley is replaced at the same time and I’d be weary of buying one that hasn’t had it done.

Mine was violently rattling occasionally on cold startup and was starting to feel sluggish, a new dephaser has sorted it.

I know a lot of places (including Renault) don’t recommend having it replaced as part of the timing belt service, but be warned they definitely wear out!

Shoutout to Mick @ Diamond Motors, top guy and really knows his stuff.
I had mine done by him yesterday.

  2. agree 100%, Mick did mine, with mandatory oil change, top service

  3. I was suprised how rough the engine was before the cambelt/dephaser change, felt brand new after.

  4. Should just be basic getting it done every belt change, only tight arses don't get it done

  5. Yes I was too. The engine is a lot quieter now and the power also feels a lot smoother too.

  6. This should be a must if getting the timing done, not worth not doing it really.

  7. ive always thought it was nuts not getting it done, especially in the mk3 clio world, people just don't get them done as a few "specialists have never seen one fail", just because they haven't seen one fail doesn't mean it wont happen

its serviceable part stop being a cheap C**T and get it changed, id be sick if i got a few thousand miles down the road and it started to rattle, pretty much all the labour again to change it, its almost off when you do a belt change anyway

What can this cause? I've heard that it doesn't cause any damage to the engine and if yours does it then just get it done with the belt?

  9. It will get noiser and eventually cause the engine to stall.

They’ve also been known to fail completely on the clio’s.

  10. I believe if they fail completely it can knock the timing right out = a few bent valves

I've never heard of one failing on the Megane

  12. they are a different design on the mk3 clio and megane, compared to the mk2 Clio’s, but it’s not worth the risk for the price of one

Anywhere in the south that you suggest getting it done? K-Tec just said it doesn't need replacing because its a lifetime part

  14. Shows how much they know then doesn't it, but then again Renault said the same to me.

They are right though, it is supposed to be a lifetime item just like say a turbo but they do fail sometimes and need replacing.

Full cost at K-Tec is £652.60, seems pretty similar to what other people are paying. They said they've replaced them due to the request of the customer but only actually seen one fail due to oil starvation.

  17. For reference is paid £570 at diamond for the full kit including dephaser.

It may be true that they've not seen one fail but bare in mind most 250's are 8 years old now so more and more will crop up as they get older.

Not too far off and diamond is too far away for me.

    Was that water pump too?

  19. Yes everything inc aux belt kit.

Should the idler pulley be replaced too?

  21. They come with the belt kit

Ah yes just seen that, only thing that isn't done is the crankshaft drive pulley which I assume isn't needed.

  23. No that doesn't need replacing ever i would have thought, you don't change the exhaust pulley either do you, no moving parts in either.

  24. Hi mate mine does this on cold start, also clatters the odd time would you say it's the dephaser? http://cloud.tapatalk.com/s/5bc2400678a1f/VID_20181013_195619.mp4

That sounds more like the cambelt to me

  26. Mine sounded more like this. Also with an intermittent tapping

  27. Yes mine did that too until. I changed the oil hasn't did it since

  28. Yes I found that an oil change temporarily fixed it but after a month or two the rattle came back.

  29. did you know which brand of oil you used ??

  30. I’ve always used OEM spec ELF

I think Renault suggest either OEM ELF like Jimmy said or Castrol Edge Titanium as well as Shell Helix?

Just got mine done along with the cambelt and thermostat as mine was faulty and can't tell a difference to be honest. Can't comment on cold starts as only just got it back but drives the same.

On the way home I did get a tyre sensor unavailable so I just wanted to check everything out and got this error!

I assume this is part of the testing they remove the solenoid and then the fault disappears after some driving and there's no service light to go with it so I assume it's okay but not what I wanted to see!

  33. May be a fault from testing but you could yet see a warning as the fault is pending. Who done the belt? It is easy to time it wrong if not careful or using cheap timing tools. I had this on my 197 a few years back and the timing was slightly out. Ended up buying Renault tools and retiming it myself.

K-Tec did it so I hope not!
I cleared the fault and drove about a mile and it didn't come back so I hope it was from testing so it logged a fault and just hadn't cleared itself yet. I'll get to drive some more tomorrow to confirm

Yeah turns out it's just something from when they were testing. The fault has been cleared and hasn't come back so I think it's all good!
Other than that the car is a lot less tappy now, doesn't seem to pull any better though maybe a little bit.

  36. On my MK2 in January this year I had the aux belt snap due to a tensioner bearing failure. With the force of the snap and perhaps the belt getting caught up somewhere, the crankshaft pulleys' vibration rubber damper got pulled out from around the pulley so had to replace the pulley. The pulley was the same price as the whole timing and aux belt kit from Renault dealership.

On inspection I found the whole damper rubber on the plastic under tray. Under normal circumstances I guess it does not need to be replaced. Delphi and Febi Bistein also manufacturer this part at way less than the dealership price so might not be a bad idea to replace it on every second timing belt service which is like almost 10 years under normal driving conditions. Rubber ages with heat and the elements. Luckily it just drives the Aux belt so will not affect timing and ensue bent valves.
