Engine vibration

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by dave77, Feb 28, 2018.

  1. My car has started to vibrate when I'm stopped, I can't feel it when moving, it's quite annoying can feel it in the steering wheel and seat, nothing from the gearstick though, engine mounts maybe? Which ones are the most common cause of this, thanks ,Dave

I think first need to check the gearbox mount on the Mk3's as the bolt is prone to breaking, other than that it will be the dog bone mounts

  3. Is that the one underneath the battery tray? Thanks

Yes the gearbox one is under the battery tray, there is an upgraded mount available i think with a bigger bolt, do a search for broken gearbox mount everything should be there

  5. You mean hopefully it is broke as it’s relatively easy cheap fix compared to alternative that being split DMF as the symptoms you describe are similar, vibrations at idle but gone when moving

  6. What's the spec of the stock bolt? As I may just change the bolt for an updated one instead of retappinga new mount

  7. It’s thicker, can’t remember maybe M10 to M12 or M14 either way need retap or replace

  8. Stocks around a m10 and you tap it out to a M12

  9. Yea was thinking of getting the same size but a higher grade bolt

  10. Not sure that’s what factor is, same size but higher grade could mean bolt is more brittle, answer could be thicker but milder steel that absorbes shock better that stiff bolt with tendency to share

  11. Yea well took the battery out. And the tray today, the bolt isint broke unfortunately, fitted a powerflex top right engine mount insert, it has made the vibration worse in idle, but the car feels tighter when driving. Any checks I can do to see if the DMF thanks

  12. Have you taken your undertray off and looked at the engine mount.

  13. Hi mate, are you talking about the lower one that sits in the middle, added pic.. was going to check, if it's worn do you know if oem or the ktec one is the way to go, I don't track the car, thanks bf5f67f6f23260c920c1b1bd67e882b4.jpg

  14. That's the one, you want to swap it for a vibra tecknics one, About £125

  15. Are they ok for road use, read they make the vibration worse lol

  16. A bit more vibration when stationary, beds in after a couple hundred mile. Makes the car feel better to drive so well worth it for me.

  17. Both the lower vibra tech and upper power flex are good upgrades but be aware both together does make substantial in cabin vibration, might annoy some folk and not others.

Regarding engine vibration only thing I initially noticed was first sign of DMF fail was with drives door wide open the door end was leaping up and down significantly

  18. Yes I noticed there was extra vibration after I fitted the upper mount insert, the car feels tighter to drive though, when I bought the car it def didn't vibrate at all on idle, it's just happened over the last 6 weeks or so, I'll check the bottom mount and see how it looks first before I start panicking it's the DMF lol thanks

  19. The rubber mount upgrades cause a fine ‘tizz’ kind of vibration whereas the DMF is more of a ‘wobble’ through car body and exaggerate when door is open

  20. I can feel it when sitting in the seat, but if I put my hand on the gearstick there is nothing through that, I can feel it on the doorcards and door it's very annoying

  21. When did vibration start ?

If is DMF next thing you should start to hear metallic tyre noise as the two items start to come apart, don’t be too worried can still drive just try not rev shit out it and at some point will need new flywheel kit fitted roughly £850 inc new slave cylinder, bearing etc

  22. Well you are right Bob, the clutch started to slip under load just the other day, the clutch, dual mass and cylinder were replaced Oct 2015 so they lasted 2 1/2 years and around 23k. My car is remapped running 316 bhp 370 ft-lb is the OEM flywheel and clutch ok for this setup, looking back on the service history the clutch etc were replaced before the car had the decat, front mount remap etc that's why I ask, thanks

  23. Oh and wheres best, cheapest for the DMF and clutch thanks

  24. Sorry it turned out to be this, what’s really annoying is reno don’t do an upgrade so just have to fit same again and wait to fail again as fitting SMF is not really a desirable option

Depending your location but would suggest going reno independent folks who know the marque but won’t klober on price

That power your running is no problem for factory clutch

  25. Cheapest I found was Renault spares direct £492 for the flywheel and clutch, that includes tax and shipping which I don't think is too bad, thanks for your help mate, much appreciated

  29. So just to update this, the clutch, flywheel and slave were all changed, the vibrations stayed the same, changed the bottom dogbone mount, the top dogbone mount and the large engine mount beside it on the drivers side, still got the vibrations lol the mount under the battery tray is the only one that hasn't been changed, its driving me nuts lol

  30. Sorry can’t read entire post at moment does this only happen at idle ?

  31. dave77, any fault codes showing up? Just in case the vibration is caused by how the engine is running at idle.

  32. Yes mate when I'm driving it its fine, it's when I'm stopped at traffic lights etc

  33. No codes mate I had it plugged in

  34. a weak injector will give this exact vibration at idle, just touch the throttle and its gone

    dave77 likes this.
  35. How could I find out which one Bob, thanks

  36. Unplug one at time see which one changes idle least

  37. Is that not the coilpacks lol listened to the injectors they sound OK, the car is mapped for v power but we can't get that here in northern ireland, wonder if the fuel I'm using is having an affect on the engine idle, im using maxol super 98ron I think v power is 99

  38. Not referring to coil packs, unplug power to each injector see makes idle more erratic, could try some octane boost if think might help, I use the stuff every day in Europe when can’t get 99, engine loves it
