Engine internals

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by arch, Sep 9, 2018.

  1. Looking for some info on the engine internals on the 250.
Do these have forged Pistons as standard, any info on rods and crank.
Also any info on what power/boost levels the internals and block will take as standard.

  2. They are not forged, but are supposed to be far stronger than the mk2s pistons.
Same goes for the rods.Have seen pics compared to mk2 rods..They are far thicker and stronger.
Power wise, lots running way over 300 bhp/lb/ft with good reliability.
Clutch will be on limit over 350lb/ft.

  4. Thanks that's really helpful rods don't look brilliant nor do the Pistons. I think if I was looking to up the power significantly the rods and Pistons would need changed. I cracked the liners on my 2.5Lt Impreza engine at 2.0 bar but the 2.35lt was reliable at 640 flywheel HP but it had expensive rods, Pistons, supertech valves etc and pretty aggressive Kelford cams that was at 2.1 bar. I think a megane at 350 to 400Whp would be a very good package.

If you are going to use this car on track then you won't need to go over 400hp, so just rods and pistons will be required, ohh and a turbo upgrade, if you want pub bragging rights and straight line speed then go all out, but the Megane isn't really that kind of car IMO.

  6. If you want big hp straight line speed get a golf R are they’re good for 600hp on standard internals and have 4WD.
Over 400hp in a FWD megane is a waste IMO.
Most people tune to around 320hp as that seems to be the meganes sweet spot.

  7. Lol I am not interested in straight line speed. I have been racing for a lot of years doing hills and sprints so I would not be building a car for pub figures.

  9. Not sure if you are taking the piss but I was looking for the info for a specific reason. I am not some nugget who knows nothing about cars and modding them. I built the Impreza I used to race from a bare shell up including all the wiring the only thing I didn't do was build the engine so building a megane to a spec that would be competative for a specific series would not be an issue, what I am trying to do now Is gathering info as I don't know enough about these cars yet.

No i wasn't taking the piss, we have had a lot on here in the past wanting a zillion horsepower to race there mates in Honda's, Fords etc etc it's also got to be noisy as fuck so they can here me coming.

I feel that the Megane is not in this league, it's in a league of it own, an all round package great out of the box and fantastic with a few modifications in certain area's.

Engine wise all you need to do is rods and pistons also a hybrid turbo, if you are going to race it then maybe consider different valves, only because the original ones are two piece ( i had one go at Spa) the rest is more than adequate, over 400hp you will need cams, exhaust manifold is supposed to be good for over 500hp, cranks are very well balanced from the factory.

    HTH

  11. Thanks and apologies if I took the wrong meaning.
I am fortunate to have a lot of contacts and have been through this all before but now want to do it on a smaller budget with lower power as racing a 600+hp car is always going to be expensive and very time consuming as everything is stressed to the limit. I know the chassis on the Megane is excellent and it's not difficult to make them handle that side is easy. What I need to decide is how far I want to take the car. It may be that running a standard engine and box with a better turbo which will produce the power and torque delivery better may be where I end up. The Owen Developments Turbo I had as a sponsored car was unbelievable the way it made boost was insane.

  12. Have a natter with this chap..
