Oil pump chain question

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by D11nyd, Aug 15, 2018.

  1. Hi does anyone know if the oilpump chain is meant to be slack on an R26 Megane?
Just removed my sump as it has a crack in and replacing but the oil pump chain seems very slack?
From what I can see there’s a plastic guide just above the chain, will it tension up under oil pressure?
Might be normal as no rattling before I stripped the sump off?
Any quick answers would be great as unsure whether to carry on?

  2. How slack is it, if it is a lot then maybe is worn, if it is a little then that ok, this part is bathed in oil all the time so i cant see how it can wear?

  3. Quite slack! Doesn’t appear to be any tension on it? Was unsure if the tensioner ( if there is one) is controlled by oil pressure?

  4. I spoke to andy at e.d about this.

I was really worried about mine whilst i was building my engine,it was scary slack it really was and andy said its pretry normal. That being said i bought a new chain and sprocket from pure motorsport i think and it was 10 times better and gave me great peace of mind.

If in doubt for the sake of 40 odd quid get the fucker swapped out for new one.

  5. I know it’s so strange isn’t it? Spoke to Rs tuning and mark at midland Renault specialists and they both said it was normal?!

How much of difference did the new one make? I built mine back up today as needed my ramp back for jobs tomorrow, it is on my mind now though!

Annoying I’d just changed my Cambelt today before I’d done the sump and couldn’t of quite easily done the chain before I fitted the new belt etc!

  6. Genuinely dude i wouldnt leave it.
Get it done.i got mine sent gauranteed next day and it came to like 50 quid .i would never have used the original one that i was worried about especially not in the engine i built.

  7. It will have some slack which has no adjustment. However shouldn’t be excessive. I did this on my own lump for peace of mind. The kit I bought was

Do order the gasket for the lower chain cover though. Doesn’t come in the kit and will need to be replaced.
