Intake or panel filter?

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by Ryan herbert, Aug 29, 2017.

  1. Sorry if this has been answered before, are there more pro's to buying an air intake kit on a 250 over uprating the panel filter? Fitted an air intake kit on a mates seat Leon and it did give a nicer noise but then could hear the turbo flutter quite loud (not a huge fan of it)
Do panel filters like BMC, k&n, pipercross give any more power/ better throttle response or noise? Thanks

  2. Can't say I really noticed any difference fitting my ITG panel filter, noise or power. Cutting the corner off the filter housing gave much better noise, though still think I'd like an induction kit for noise and maybe a little extra response?

  3. Have you done the mid box chop? That adds loads of extra sound.

  4. Looking at cat back exhaust systems soon to be honest, will be the next post from me

  5. Might be worth getting that sorted first. You might decide you dont want anymore sound after its fitted.

  6. Have you declared it to insurance, if you have what did you say? Trying be good with it all with this car :tearsofjoy:

  7. From what I have read, most have said just to stick with a panel filter. I think if your chasing high numbers then you may need to fit a intake kit. I took the foam out the back of the standard air box the other weekend and I couldn't believe the sound change it made just from taking that out.

  8. Is it worth getting a 'better' one (if there is any) or worth just sticking to the standard panel filter?

  9. Yeah, forgot that I removed the foam out of my airbox. Made some difference but not as much as cutting the corner off the airbox housing.

  10. Ryan, I have a KTEC panel filter for megane RS250 with hardly any use if its any good to you mate. £20 posted to UK

  11. Have consulted two best tuners in UK regarding standard airflow system on mk3 and both had conducted test and say the same: factory fit system DOES NOT inhibit air flow to over 360 bhp

  12. do you know how about for the mk2

  13. I didn't enquiry regarding mk2 sorry, however if the airflow is not too dissimilar have to imagine same applies maybe.

  15. @ Chappers2000 what do you mean cutting the corner off, do you have pictures. I did think about drilling a few holes in the front, but suspect that will just draw in hot ayr

Cutting corners off your airbox seems like a terrible idea doesn't it? Wouldn't that drag all the crap through the turbo and engine that the filter is there to stop?

  17. It's only cutting off the round intake(that I assume could be connected to a cold air feed) so you end up with a bit bigger square hole. Air still has to pass through the filter. I agree it's just for noise though.

  18. Jamie says the injen cold air system is worth up to 15 hp..
dyno proven back to back with standard airbox.

What cold air systems are there available that fit the standard air box?
I thought you meant cutting at the back not the front! I may do this for some more sound

  21. my airbox seems like will suck in more hot air than others, say maybe 20-40 degree celsius higher. but will it affect the performance as the air will go through the very hot turbo and make it between 100 to 200 degree celsius depends mainly on the turbo

    That's scary haha

  23. Not mine but the link shows what someone else did. How big you make the hole seems to vary and it looks like some people have done it with a can opener!! Dremel worked for me and then I pulled the sound-deadening foam out of the inside of the housing. Still not loud but you can hear a bit of induction noise now which I like. https://goo.gl/images/1SDRRj

  24. That's quite a few holes drilled in your picture. :grinning:

  25. that took me HOURS to drill and trim:sweatsmile:

How much difference does cutting off a corner make to sound? I tried a cone and it was way too loud. Sounded like Darth Vader. But then most people suggest just removing the foam from stock airbox which I have done and to be honest I couldn't tell the difference. I want a nice sound when I lift off like I had in my 225 with a cone filter but not the OTT Darth Vader you get in this with a cone filter.

  27. All I get is a sound like breathing quick quick with your lips close together. With the windows shut it's not really noticeable. With the windows down and a heavy right foot you can hear the intake. I will go down the ktr induction kit at some point, partly for a bit more noise.

Let me know what sounds like, I want something more than the currently sound but not the bare cone filter I had before.

  29. Just re-read your post. I really only get more induction noise when accelerating. Not noticed any difference on lift off. No pops and bangs

Will have to wait for your opinion on K-Tec's induction kit.
